Toss Or Trash: December 2012

During the Winter Holidays, I burned up as many Bath and Body Works candles as I could. Here are some that are done and I loved them all…

swatches toss notd 130Merry Mistletoe was a very soft fragrance; not bold at all. I found Sparkling Icicles to be the same way. But I enjoyed it. After I had burned these to the end, I set them on the floor by my bookcase. I see how dusty that place is!!

swatches toss notd 135I actually only had one Merry Mistletoe. It got another photo op here. And I loved all of these too. My house had the fragrance of Christmas, if nothing else.

Then, I used up quite a bit of hair products…

swatches toss notd 142Love me some Pantene! I stocked up, big time, when these there 75% at CVS almost 2 years ago. It was worth it. I got the Rock Your Hair hairspray this year at Premiere Orlando. It’s an awesome hairspray without being overly stiff. I have seen this line off and on at Ross Dress For Less. If I find it again, I will repurchase it.

The next two from Macadamia Natural Oil surprised me. I am just sort of OK on the hairspray. It only had a mild hold, it did smell good and my hair didn’t feel dried out from using it. However, it is rather expensive at around $23. And the cleansing conditioner, at almost $40, was a total waste, in my opinion. I didn’t get the soft hair I usually get when I use the leave-in oil treatments by Macadamia Natural Oil. And, this can was a hold down pump to dispense. It didn’t hold a lot of product. I won’t be repurchasing either of these two.

There wasn’t much in the way of makeup…

swatches toss notd 152Nailene’s Miracle Worker was sent to me for review. I loved it! But now, I can’t find anywhere to repurchase it! My nails are naturally thin and this treatment was one of the best I have ever used. The Ardell false eyelashes were just plum used up. These are my favorite stye too. They became too ragged to wear anymore. I’m on the lookout to replace this style. The Avon product is a cream concealer. I ran across this de-stashing my old stuff. I don’t think they make this anymore, as I have had this since the ’90’s. 😉 As you can tell, that green concealer hid a lot of red spots/areas on my face. I liked the consistency because it stayed put, period! Since I can’t truly remember how long I’ve had this, I am throwing it out.

The Lush Lip Scrub was good. I got one of those little desposible test spatulas to take out a bit of the product. Then, I took that little scoop of product into the shower and used it there. It was a lot less messy that way. As much as I loved this product, I feel I can find something just as good for half the price. I feel Lush’s prices to be way out of line for what they deliver. I found a lip scrub that has a lip balm in the cap by Victoria’s Secret for half the Lush price. If you don’t worry about money, this Lip Scrub is all that.

Last is Cellnique Renewal Serum. I reviewed this, initially, here. I loved it then and I love it even more now. This was a wonderful product to use. I used it both for my day and night time ritual. This, along with the Reversal Platinum Cream, are a top favorite skincare line for me. If I did not have other skincare products to review, these two are difinitely a set I would use continually. I’m sad to see this used up. And, just this week, I used up the Reversal Platinum Cream. Boo hoo.

Smashbox: Black Plum Lipstick

Smashbox gave the bloggers a tube of lipstick at the pre-convention meeting for The Makeup Show, here in Orlando. I was thrilled until I saw the shade…

swatches toss notd 055 swatches toss notd 059 swatches toss notd 056‘Black Plum’ is really dark. As in goth dark. As much as I’m mesmerized by the deep, velvety burgundy shade, I knew it wasn’t going to look anything but garish on me.

I couldn’t help but swatch it though. And when I did, I just by chance, took my finger and swiped the tube and then swatched it on my hand next to the first swatch…

swatches toss notd 061I cannot tell you why I did that. But, ‘Black Plum’ was looking more plum than black with a finger swatch. Usually, I will apply my lipsticks directly on my lips from the tube. I only use a brush when the product is in a palette. When I was training to be a makeup artist in the late ’80’s, we were taught to not use our fingers but always use clean sponges and brushes. It was the decade of AIDS and little was still known about the disease. So, we were taught to apply makeup without ever touching the skin.

Well, it’s my finger and my lips and my lipstick so, why not try it?…

swatches toss notd 074‘Black Plum’ then looked about the same color as my own lips, just 3 or so shades darker. There’s nothing garish about this lipstick at all! This Smashbox lippie is very creamy to apply and lasts better than 4 hours this way. And, I still have the option to use it directly from the tube, blotting it if I wish or, using a lip brush. But, for now, I like applying it with my finger…

This product was provided to me from the maker. This is my own honest opinion about the product.

elf Products: Not Being A Creeper, Just Pretty Shadows And A Multi-Purpose Stick

Do you learn a lot about deals and new products from beauty blogs? That’s what the point of reading beauty blogs is all about! So, when I read that Kmart had many of their elf products at half off (as if they are not so darn affordable already), I wanted to see if there was anything I just might be interested in. This is what I came away with…

NOTD EOTD 067 Do you know I love multi-tasking beauty products? Elf’s All Over Color Stick looked really pretty, so it went into the basket. There were only three different shade colors left for the eye shadow singles: Dusk, Sage and Golden Glow. Those were perfect colors to try out.

50 Cents? I spent $2 on this entire haul. I can find that much money digging around in my car console or under the seat!

NOTD EOTD 068 NOTD EOTD 070They are not tiny in size and have just the right amount of sparkle to be both bold and chic.

Here’s Dusk…

NOTD EOTD 074 NOTD EOTD 076Purple? Blue? Smokey Grey? Yes!! I think I have only gone twice in the past week without wearing this one. The pigment is really good, as are all of the shadows I bought.

Sage is a swell green to use to make an unique smokey eye…

NOTD EOTD 078I didn’t do a close-up of Golden Glow; silly me. But I did get swatches of them all…

NOTD EOTD 080All Over Color Stick in Pink Lemonade is just too perfect of a color for me…

NOTD EOTD 071 NOTD EOTD 073Since I usually wear mineral foundation, I don’t use cream blush but rarely. Now, I have been experimenting with using just a cream blush and setting powder; no foundation. Pink Lemonade looks so natural on me that I have been wearing that look often. I haven’t tried it as a shadow yet but it is lovely as a lip tint. The stick isn’t super creamy but it does slide on without a hitch.

Pink Lemonade works so well with my skin tone…

NOTD EOTD 084The shadows are on the flaky side but the pigment is super rich and I don’t find the fallout to be so terrible that a fan brush can’t whisk the crumbs away. The All Over Color Stick did much better as a lip tint than blush as far as staying power. However, I will note that I used the blush very sparingly.

Later, I found a four-shadow pan at Target to put these shadows in. It all looks very smart.

Fair deal for just $2, don’t ya think?

Laziest Post Ever: Studio M Glitters

Studio M polishes are not found in my area. Lucky me, I have a swell friend that lives in Michigan who does, however. I can’t say anything about these polishes that you won’t discover yourself after you pick your jaw up off the floor…

I couldn’t find any names on these. Now, that’s a shame! If you love glitter, and you have to love bar glitter too, then you’ll want to keep looking…

Beauty Blurbs In The News

I found a couple of beauty blurbs in the November 2012 addition of ‘Womens Health Magazine. I thought I would share them with you.

The first spot talked about the names that cosmetic companies come up with for their products. From a study by University of Oregon, it was noted that women favored names that referred to something sexual or romantic. The study said the reason is because we find it exciting and leads us to imagine a hot scenario or a pleasant memory. I think NARS was listening when they named their blush Orgasm!

The other blurb was about wearing fake nails. The American Contact Dermatitis Society revealed that the main ingredient in the acrylic powder used to make acrylic nails, called acrylates, can cause itchy and painful cuticles and nails that are sore, dry, discolored and make them split. This article recommended that you take them off and head to your dermatologist to see if you are allergic to the acrylic.

And last, it is stated that 63% of black adults do not wear sunscreen. Folks, even dark skin can get cancer! And, studies show that when people of color discover they have skin cancer, it is usually more advanced than when light-skinned adults get it checked. Let’s put it this way: if you have skin, use sunscreen!!
