Gifts From Heaven Above; Walgreen’s Top Shelf Shopping

The season has come for the ‘Look Up’ shopping. What is this, you say? Retail stores receive a mess-load of Christmas products. It will fill up their backroom in an over-consumption minute. What Walgreens is known to do is put out the Holiday gift sets on the higher shelves, above the head, in preparation to move them down to the shoppable levels. But, if it is out on the floor, you can still buy it! I shared some of my Walgreens findings with G. at Nouveau Cheap‘s blog. She’s my source for all things new at the drugstore.

This is one of the first items I purchased…

swatches galore 014Look! One Buck!! Profusion comes out with a variety palettes during the Holiday. I find them hit or miss as far as quality. It’s a small gamble to find out if the shadows are too hard, too powdery or just right. Many one of the shadows is unblendable. Sometimes the entire palette isn’t worth your time. Yet, this one was a dollar. I lose that much in my car seat! So, this splurge is hardly a dent.

If I remember correctly, there were 6 different palettes to pick from. I got the purples…

swatches galore 018

I can sit and stare at color palettes all day. Even when I was a kid, I had to have all my crayons in rainbow order and I wouldn’t use them. I didn’t want to spoil them so I would ask a classmate if I could borrow theirs. I don’t know if anyone ever caught on to my scheme. A bit of my reason to blog is to not only capture the virgin moment of makeup but also, to get me to make that first step in using it by swatching.

Anyway, are not these shades pretty? Nothing new but still pretty. Here are the sacred swatches from my first 2013 Holiday palette…

swatches galore 027I used a swab to swatch. And these were velvety smooth. I found them easy to blend with my makeup brushes. A bit of fallout but I really loaded up the swab for a swatching. They do build to a super pigmentation over a shadow primer.

Cheaper than a couple of bananas, you won’t be doing the peel slip by inventing in at least one of Profusion’s palettes. And for a buck, these can make nice Secret Santa or stocking stuffer gifts.

Do you treat yourself to these little, baby splurges? Do you think I’ll end up with some other palettes this Holiday?

Fergie’s Jet Set Makeup Palette from Wet ‘n Wild

Being the sucker that I am for makeup palettes, I nearly wept when I found this at Walgreens. It is the limited edition Wet ‘n Wild’s Fergie’s Jet Set Makeup Palette…

samples and swatches 063 samples and swatches 064 swatches galore 012 swatches galore 013 As you can see from the photo above, this palette has a lot in it. When you open it up, the array of shades is overwhelming…

samples and swatches 068 samples and swatches 069 samples and swatches 070Is there a color that is missing? Maybe a red but, other than that, you could want for nothing. Some are matte, some sparkly and some shimmery. Some are very pigmented and some are on the light side. With 72 shades, there’s something for everyone…

samples and swatches 081 samples and swatches 077 samples and swatches 074Here are just a few random swatches. I used a swap to apply them…

samples and swatches 100 samples and swatches 098Most of the lip colors are balms. They are rather ‘wet’. Thus, there isn’t a lot of staying power with them. However, they are pretty…

samples and swatches 085 samples and swatches 084 samples and swatches 096 samples and swatches 095 samples and swatches 093And here are a few random swatches…

samples and swatches 105Having an array of blushes makes me reach outside of my comfort zone. I can easily get by with just one blush. Actually, I have to consciously work at trying different colors. These are pretty enough to try them all…

samples and swatches 088 samples and swatches 108Sadly, these eyeliner and lip liner pencils are gratuitous, in my opinion. I suppose you could use the brown one for the brows, as well. There are just way too many other liners that are better. However, if someone doesn’t have any, these will fix you up…

samples and swatches 089Last are the highlighters and contour shades. The darker shade is too sparkly for me to contour with however, it does make a decent bronzer on my skin…

samples and swatches 086samples and swatches 059Maybe the sun was gone by the time I snapped this photo thus, the off white balance. Those shades are richer in color than the photo tells.

So, if you want to add to your palette collection or, just want to have a robust amount of eye shadow and lip color selections at hand, you might want to consider this. The only downside I see is that you can’t pop one of the lippies into your purse for on-the-go touchups. This palette is $30 at Walgreens. Considering the amount of makeup in this palette, that’s a pretty good deal.

Are you a palette collector or, do you add to your collection bit by bit?

Makeup From The Archives: Jerome Alexander’s The Stack

There’s no doubt I love makeup palettes. Even if the brand is sub-par, I have a hard time resisting because I love all the pretties grouped or, lined up together. Even though this palette isn’t quite the norm, I love the packaging…

samples and swatches 029 samples and swatches 055This is from Jerome Alexander and it is called ‘The Stack’. I need to tell you a secret though…I have had this Stack for 8 years, easily. You’ll notice in the photos of the lip colors that they have turned ‘weepy’. But, I can attest that they have not ‘turned’, meaning smell funky. I purchased The Stack from HSN many moons ago. And since I recently moved, I rediscovered it.

Here’s what The Stack consists of: eyeshadows…

samples and swatches 034 samples and swatches 032Oh, and notice the embossing on the pans. That’s another thing I’m a sucker for! These shadows are creamy and carry some good pigmentation. They are also powdery and create fallout. However, the shadows stay in place all day with a good shadow primer.

And these are the lip colors…

samples and swatches 039 samples and swatches 035You can see how they have ‘weeped’ and, some of the pigments have separated too. And, it’s obvious that I like mauve shade the most.

The blushes are awesome! I love the variety and the softness of the powder…

samples and swatches 041I have experimented with the creme foundation but, found it a tad too yellow for me. However, the powder foundation works quite to my liking…

samples and swatches 043 samples and swatches 045Last, is the correcting powder (below on the right). This is a bit deceiving and I wasn’t quite sure how it worked. I’m using it as a setting powder and it actually balances out the yellowness of the creme foundation. Go figure! It may have to do with the light disbursement as I end up with a healthy glow…

samples and swatches 047

samples and swatches 059You can see that The Stack is quite compact…

samples and swatches 051I wasn’t able to find anything of this nature in doing a search for it. Jerome Alexander has moved on to other things. However, you can still find a few of his products out there. He was one of the first to come out with the ‘corrector balls‘. I know I have them…somewhere. I hope they turn up like this gem.

After a week or so of playing with this palette, I am packing it away in my overnight/stranded away from home bag. I travel out of town twice a week and, with winter weather approaching, there is the possibility that I could get snowed in away from home. This product can suit several of my makeup needs on the fly. It doesn’t take up much space at all.

Have you ever seen anything like The Stack or, have heard of Jerome Alexander? Does this packaging appeal to you?

Wet ‘n Wild’s Fergie Collection: Desert Festival

Have you seen the new Fergie collection from Wet ‘n Wild? I’m loving the color combos in these. Thanks to beauty blogs and beauty blog friends, I now have no problem stepping out of my old comfort zone and wearing lots of different eye shadow colors. This palette here would have been one that I would never even consider, a few years back. But now, I’m digging it!…

samples and swatches 019 samples and swatches 016‘Desert Festival’ can go from a crisp neutral to a spicy Southwestern feel. For a drugstore brand, Wet ‘n Wild can come up with some complex colors…

samples and swatches 021 samples and swatches 022The center, taupe, is a matte and, so it the darker peach color in the upper right corner. You can see the others are vivid with shimmers.

I swatched with a swab…

samples and swatches 027 samples and swatches 025The off-white shade in the upper left corner seems very weak in the swatches. However, it is a bit more robust on the eye. And just WOW on the extreme dark brown sparkle in the lower right corner! I can push that shade to the limit for a smoky eye look. I used an eyeliner brush and smudged that shadow all around my eyes for a fascinating look.

The darker peach shade in the upper right corner is somewhat chalky, like some mattes can be. It’s workable but some may not feel they have the time to devote to babying that shadow along. There are a few crumbs from the matte taupe shadow in the middle but the application of it is quite solid.

I have acquired several other shadow palettes from this collection and so far, I’m pleased with all but possibly one. I’ll showcase all of them in a later post. For now, I’m enjoying the view outside of my makeup selection ‘box’.

What color have you found that you like when you stepped outside the box? Do you have this Fergie palette from Wet ‘n Wild?

Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ Cream

Oh, heavens! I was NOT going to jump on the BB Cream band wagon. I didn’t have any real interest in the product. Nor, did I need another product to add to the variety of my collection. Then, I end up getting samples in magazines. I find coupons that I get reimbursed the cost of my BB Cream purchase. And now, I get Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ to try out…

samples and swatches 001Yes, Pond’s has been around for years. Yet in the last couple of years, they have upped their game to appeal to a whole new generation. I’m hoping I can get you on the band wagon too because, I think Pond’s products are worth your consideration. I ask you to take a closer peek at these BB+ Creams… samples and swatches 002I won’t recommend that you use this as your sole provider for SPF protection. However, a broad spectrum of 15 is a good start. I found some of the natural ingredients (ginger, zinc oxide, potassium and iron) to be a surprise…a pleasant surprise… samples and swatches 003 samples and swatches 004However, sometimes natural ingredients can mean a shorter shelf life. I don’t know how old these creams are but, I see I should use them up before next March… samples and swatches 005 The tubes are well-packaged. Not only are they pretty but I like that it is easy to squeeze out the product, rather than stick my fingers in a jar. The tops twist off firmly and the hole is small. I don’t think I’m going to end up with cream goo all over my vanity…samples and swatches 006Pond’s BB+ Cream comes in only two shades: Light and Medium. There isn’t any doubt which one is right for me. However, I’m sad that darker-skin beauties don’t get an opportunity to work with this… samples and swatches 009 samples and swatches 015The light is an awesome match! The cream is so creamy and sooth to apply. I was able to build up the coverage to disguise any spots or redness with complete ease. Even though it did set nicely on my skin, I had to use a translucent finishing powder to keep it from being overly dewy. It may be OK for some folks to have that dewy glisten however, I don’t like it. It wasn’t heavy, I just like a matte finish to my complexion. But then it DOES say it is ‘luminous’.

You can find Pond’s BB+ Cream at Walmart, Target, Ulta and drugstores. Occasionally, you can find it in grocery stores. I have noticed that some of the grocers will carry just the medium if they carry it at all.

I gotta know if you have tried Pond’s BB+ Cream and what you think about it. Is it something you like?

This product was provided to me by the maker, Unilever. My opinions are strictly my own.

Urban Decay: Foxy Four-Way Eyeliner Pencil Set

The Urban Decay eyeliners are legendary in their colors and wearability. After 3 years of reading about UD eyeliners being the best EVER, I finally caved in and got this limited release set. It came out last year as a dual-end pencil eyeliner collection named Foxy Four-Way Double Ended Eye Pencil Set…

Mega swatch day 085

Mega swatch day 086 Mega swatch day 088

If these liners were truly waterproof, they were going to stick with me ALL day long. I was ready to put them through the loops.

A set of 4 pencils and 8 dynamic colors. Here are the colors…

Mega swatch day 093 Mega swatch day 096

Starting on the left: Perversion, Deep End, Zero, Sabbath.

And, the other ends…

Mega swatch day 091 Mega swatch day 097

Listing these from the left: Demolition, Muse, Delinquent, Stash.

It really was difficult for me to choose which one to try first. And here’s why…

Mega swatch day 101They are ALL beautiful. And, true to all that I was reading on other beauty blogs, their staying power was as good as the smell of fried fish in the house on Fridays.

I am enjoying using the UD eyeliners and continue to stay in awe of the superior staying power of these shades. Truly, after I tested these on my hand, they were still there until the evening when I washed my face. I had to have washed my hands a half dozen times before then and there wasn’t even a smudge from the eyeliners. Sold? I am!

This holiday season, Urban Decay has out yet another pencil eyeliner set. I haven’t decided if I need it…so far. However, if you’d like to take a look at it, check it out here on Urban Decay’s website. The reason I’m tempted, this new set has FIVE new shades. Ohhhh!!!

I purchased my Urban Decay set at Ulta. However, you can purchase them directly from UD’s website.

What’s your experience with Urban Decay’s eyeliners?

Straight From Etsy, I Love Nail Polish Holiday Polishes

Can I give you a couple of reasons why I love I LOVE NAIL POLISH brand? First, the combinations of holos and glitters are like nothing I see anywhere else. Also, I can order smaller bottles, which are less expensive, allowing me to purchase a larger variety.

Let me show you a couple of my recent purchases that will insure I’m ready for the holidays…

swatches nails and makeup 041 swatches nails and makeup 044Seriously. ‘Pumpkinhead‘. Nothing will scream Halloween better than this glitter screamfest. I haven’t had any polishes that made me want to stare at them in quite some time. It’s a whole paragraph just to tell you that there is square and different size of hex glitter in this. The green, copper and orange colors are in the right ratio for Fall.

swatches nails and makeup 037 swatches nails and makeup 040“Christmas In Bordeaux’ is the Norman Rockwell for the fingernails. Right? Every single glitter color is Christmas! Square, shard, dot and hex glitters abound. Gold, red and green colors will deck your nails for Yule. (Shhh…beat Santa to the punch. Order the full size of this one at ILNP.com because it’s on clearance!)

No need to pontificate, see for yourself!…

swatches nails and makeup 060swatches nails and makeup 058‘Pumpkinhead’ makes me ready for hayrides and caramel apples…swatches nails and makeup 067“Christmas in Bordeaux’ will get you in the mood to hang tinsel and string popcorn for the tree…

swatches nails and makeup 066swatches nails and makeup 056I don’t mean to rush the Holidays, but you can get your I Love Nail Polishes at their Etsy store. The minis are $3.75 each and I got my order in less than 5 days.

swatches nails and makeup 035 swatches nails and makeup 036I do need some help, however. What color of polish would you recommend as a base color for these Holiday smack-you-in-the-face glitters? Do you have your Holiday nail manicures selected?
