The Ugly Series: Part 4, How Could I Mess That Up

Why is it ugly…

Well, it’s not. However, outside of nail blogland, there are those that find black nail polish just frightful. There are many parents that would not want to see black nail polish on their child’s Sunday School teacher.

That said, I wanted to take a black polish and juice it up. For my black, I chose Essence’s ‘I Love My Jeans’. Take a look at this black polish. This is NOT your regular, plain ol’ black.

This black has a low-light silver shimmer to it. And truthfully, I didn’t notice it when I picked it up to do an ugly. Here I have on 3 coats. If you notice the pinkie, it is a sneak preview of what I’m going to do here. That’s a test run.

Here, you can see those shimmers. I can’t even say whether it is silver or whether it is holo. It captured many different colors when held my nails juuuust right in the sunlight.

Now to see if I can massacre it..

This yellow is from a 6 pack of…gasp!!! flaky glitters. Oh, my gosh! I picked out the color I liked least to do the experiment.

One coat, boys and girls. The black took care of any of that yellow ‘took vitamins pee’ color. And what appeared…swoonafied gemme!! It has no name. Should I call it ‘Vitamin Pee’?

Wow. Now I’m inclined to try this again with the other holo glitters. Do I dare tell you there’s a RED one?? One coat…oh, I said that already. I’m sort of dazed by this combo.

I tried to do an ugly and ended up with love. Reminds me of finding love. I had decided I was perfectly happy with being single. And then what happens; I met my husband. Crap! I can’t even get ‘singlehood’ down correctly. (Secretly I’m not bummed about it, though.)

Can I call this ugly? Nope. I couldn’t do ugly this time. May not be everyone’s dream mani, but it sure is mine.

Did I give this one a fair shake? Shall we venture to call this a ‘pleasant surprise’?

I Created Visions of Sugar Plums

We have enjoyed a quite, tranquil holiday weekend at home.  Just me, hubs and the two cats.
And I have got a lot of swatching done.  It wasn’t work at all.  More like playing.

I wanted to try a green polish and use ‘Hidden Treasure’ over it, then matte it.  I think most of my readers will truly understand how these combinations will just pop into your head.  Well, at least they do for me.  In fact, some nights I fall asleep coming up with creations and then dream about them.

So, I dug in the unswatched pile, and found Ulta’s ‘Jaded.’  Perfect, I wanted to try a green that wasn’t from a Holiday collection.

This is frosty with some shimmer in it.  You can’t see that shimmer in the photo.  It’s very minuet.  Boy, the first 2 coats of this were watery.  So on the third one, I went a bit thicker to get it to be opaque.

My polishing was great, for me.  But the ugliest cuticles ever, kill the look.  I’m not got to apologize for them.  I’m going to take action about making them over.

All my photos here are indoor lighting.  I’m right at my desk and just loved the light at the moment.

Now for the flakies.  I was going to do this all with Sally Hansen’s ‘Hidden Treasure.’  But as I dug in my unswatched stack, I found an Essence’s ‘Space Queen’.  I know they are not even close, but I wanted to see what they’d look like side by side.

‘Hidden Treasure’ is on thumb, middle and pinky.  ‘Space Queen’ is on index and ring finger.  As you can see, ‘Hidden Treasure’ is a flakey.  ‘Space Queen’, she’s an iridescent glitter.  Both give a nice winter Holiday feel.  But I wasn’t done with my creative madness.

You’ve heard that song by The Stones, ‘Paint It Black’?  It goes, “I see a red door and I want to paint it black.”  Just what in the hell does that mean???  Well, I see a pretty color and I want to paint it matte.

Mattified!  Index is ‘Space Queen’ and ring finger is ‘Hidden Treasure.’

And here is my entire left hand alternating.  And a very BIG DRATS!  I have a tear on the outside of my thumb nail.  Grrrr!!!  Before nail blogging, I would have just chopped it off.  But, heck, my nails are so close to being uniform.  sigh

Sparkles or matte?  Hidden Treasure or Space Queen?

And, I would like to share with you, my Ultimate Favorite Christmas song: Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas Canon.

Metal Gear Nails

A pedicure and a manicure can make you feel so pampered.   And, having professional ones makes all the difference.  I, finally!, got that pedicure that was needed.  And the manicure helped tame my cuticles and shape my nails uniformly.

Here’s Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure in ‘Pedal to the Metal.’  This picture is taken at the sunny window.

Here’s the sunshiny, outside light one.  That’s some strange anomaly on the ring finger.  Not there in real life.

There…that’s better.  And this is a much better representation of this color.  It’s a dusty, lavender, slightly metallic flavor.  Oh, and the husband had on the matching shirt.  Just by accident…

And what a great pedicure!  I got one with lots of massaging.  And sloughing.  And tidying up the nails.  Here’s a cutie, Eva Supreme Nail Laquer in ‘Paris’…

Outside in some beautiful sunlight.  It was rare today, but I got some!

A closer look of my mermaid-colored toes and the lacquer.

The sunny window did a fair job of catching this frosty, light green polish.  It makes me think of sea foam.  Even though real sea foam is white. :p  It looks like a very pale green metallic.

Both of these are with 2 coats after a BS.  At the salon she put a top coat on and when I got home I added 2 coats of Seche Clear and then finished with Seche Vite.

Both colors are pale and pastel.  I think they are very light and feminine.  Neither my hands or feet are screaming ‘COLOR’!!!!

And flashing back…here is an eye shadow from Essence I picked up at Ulta on Friday:

Not only does it match the tank top I was wearing, but it goes with my nails as well.  This ‘new to me orange’ is called ‘Wild One’ from the Sparkling Line.  The photo doesn’t quite show the shadow’s sparkles.  It looks, actually, matte in the photo.  But it has a shimmer with teeny little sparkles.

‘Wild One’ is an appropriate name, I never used orange shadow.  I feel wild wearing orange, and blue for that matter, eye shadows.  However, I have seen some super cute makeup blogs and tutorials using orange.  There’s MissChievous , Lauren Luke and Frantastic  just a few of my very favorites.  I liked the look so I’m going for it!  Caution to the wind!  I’m deviating from a middle-aged woman to a wanton girl!  Yea…I know…that’s really funny.  Or…scary.
