Milani’s Spring Collection: Orchidia and Lavender Fizz

Milani Cosmetics was a big sponsor for the Central Florida Beauty Bloggers last month. We got the opportunity to preview a lot of their spring collection. And the nail polishes were PRIME!

Here is the first shade I chose to try out…

This is ‘Orchidia’. Make sure you look closely because ‘Orchidia’ is NOT a creme. There is a shimmer in this that is as dainty as gossamer fairy wings. This shade is so nice that even my camera played nice with it. This is a very good reproduction of the color.

But there was another polish in there that made a spectacular match. The glitter polish is ‘Lavender Fizz.’ And it is a darling glitter bomb…

It’s filled up with purple glitter. ‘Lavender Fizz’ is a one of Milani’s One Coat Glitter polishes. So, I used a very thin coat of it over ‘Orchidia’. Perfect!…

These 2 polishes are right on trend with the brighter pastels of spring. Milani polishes, as well as their other makeup products, are known for being highly pigmented. Both ‘Orchidia’ and ‘Lavender Fizz’ live up to both the color trend and coverage.

I used 2 coats of ‘Orchidia’ and one thin coat of ‘Lavender Fizz’. I didn’t need a top coat because ‘Lavender Fizz’ is not only sparkly but it’s shiny too. And these polishes wore without a chip or wear for 2 days.

Can you see the mileage one could get from just these two Milani polishes?

The products reviewed in this post were provided by the maker/distributor. All opinions are my own.

Manicure ‘Sam-mich’

This trend of creating a nail polish sandwich (we say ‘sam-mich’ in my house….because we’re weird like that) is really cute. And I am enjoying the creativity that it beckons.

Go here and look at Nightly Nail’s sammich. Durn cute, eh? Hey, she says ‘sammich’ too! But she’s not weird; she’s a friend.

And this one….ah, take a look at this one here. This is by Never Enough Nails.

I was at Ulta and spotted this polish by Revlon and ‘sandwich’ was the first thing that came to my mind.

Revlon’s ‘Starry Pink.’ This is a dusty, light-pinkish lavender that has silver hexagon and micro-glitter.

I liked it because it looks like a ‘cheater’s’ sammich…

I’m sorry…my cuticles need 911! And, can you see that I have, actually, put cuticle oil on them too? Sigh…

However, am I on track here with ‘Starry Pink’ looking like a polish sandwich. It was a pleasant surprise that it really did have some qualities of the sandwich manicure.

Granted, I am not a fan of dusty pink polishes. I think they look dirty on me. But this one, it almost gets by…

I wore it for a couple of days and it did start to grow on me. I have on two coats with Color Club’s ‘Vivid’: Color Intensifying Top Coat. I used that hoping it would give some luminosity to ‘Starry Pink.’

So, what do you think? Want some ‘tater chips to go with that sammich? Here’s the tidbit on me today; I am not a big sandwich fan at all. There are just a few sandwiches I like. And, this is one that seems to have won me over.

My Continued Love Affair with Forever 21 Polish

As a faithful reader, you have read my many posts on swatching Forever 21’s Love & Beauty nail polish. It’s the sweet combination of beautiful colors and a price that is completely affordable.

Tara, owner of Tough as Nails, just finished up a week of reviewing Love & Beauty polishes. I’ve totally enjoyed them. You can too by clicking here.

That revitalized my love again, so I dug out a new one to swatch. This is ‘Lavender.’ Of course, that name does NOTHING for me. That would be like calling me ‘Girl.’ Yawn…

But, I say, let the mani do the talkin’…

The color reminds me of the lilac bushes we had in our backyard when I was a kid. I have on 3 coats, with 2 on the thumb, and just one on my index finger. It is a delicate shade even with just one coat…

I discovered that ‘Lavender’ had a chic, long-lost cousin, housed in bottles almost identical, and who will have her time in the spotlight later…

I’m reading that some nail bloggers are saying ‘Oh no! Another crackle?!’ But, I’m saying ‘Hey, another crackle!’  Lavender got the works…

I picked up 5 randomly and gave them a test-drive. Starting with the thumb, Sally Hansen’s ‘Vintage Violet’, China Glaze’s ‘Cracked Concrete’, Sally Hansen’s ‘Distressed Denim’, OPI’s ‘Silver Shatter’ and last, China Glaze’s ‘Crushed Candy.’

All of them seemed to have turned out well. I think the least favorite would be the ‘Distressed Denim’ since it doesn’t stay with that demure look. And, my favorite would be ‘Vintage Violet’ for purple on purple.

Are you still having fun with crackle polishes or, has the love affair faded?

Miss Independent – St. Valentine’s Day Manicure Marathon-Day 14

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

This is the final day of the Manicure Marathon.  And even though I have had tons of fun, I’m pinked (and red) out!  I have past the finish line!  Well, not quite yet but, that’s another post.

My hubs got me this for Valentine’s Day…

Thankfully, it’s small and we did split it.  Very chocolaty!!

I got him this…

My hubs is a feracious reader.  Since retiring, he reads even more.  My brother and his family got me a Kindle for Christmas and my hubs has been pouting about it ever since. I share very easily but, he would have none of that.  So, I made him very happy with his very own.

I’m rounding out the marathon with a new Nicole by OPI nail polish.  This is my first Nicole purchase.  And this shade was the perfect introduction…

This is ‘Miss Independent.’  I saved this one for the last day for a reason.

If you are flying solo during Valentine’s Day, it can be a very lonely day.  I had felt that way many times.  It wasn’t until I embraced my ‘single-hood’ that I stopped seeing the entire world as ‘coupled.’  So, I would spoil myself.  I’d get a special gift for myself.  I’d get a bouquet of flowers and put them on my kitchen table.  I spent the day gushing over everyone else’s flowers they got at work and then would go home to make my favorite meal and spend the evening remembering that I had no one to account to, I could leave my clothes anywhere I wanted, I didn’t have to ask anyone where they wanted to go out to eat!  I was Miss Independent.

The promotional piece from Nicole by OPI states that this is a lavender.  It’s a metallic lavender, yes.  Yet, it’s pastel, soft, pretty and reminds me of Valentine’s Day cards from the Victorian age.

The brush is a fat, flat one and I do like how it performs.  The polish did have some buckling and it didn’t dry as fast as I thought it would.  Hence, some smudges.  But I am in serious ‘like’ over the color.  I have 3 coats and, 2 would have been just fine.  I have a coat of Nailene’s Miracle Maker as the top coat.  One negative, I don’t like the shape of this bottle.  It makes it clumsy to hold while polishing.

‘Miss Independent’ wore fairly well.  I am showing it the 2nd day of wear.  It didn’t chip or peel.  And, metallics can get streaky but the brush, I’m sure, helps eliminate that issue.

How do you like the fatter, wider brushes?  Do you like this color for a Valentine’s day polish?  What has been your experience with using Nicole by OPI?

Nailene’s Miracle Maker was sent to me for review. These are my honest opinions on the product.

Met Pink’s Cousin~Lavender

Don’t waste any time!!  Jump over to my giveaway post and enter.  It ends Saturday, 10/2/10 at 10 EST.

When I was a kid, I remember the Avon lady coming to our house, sitting down with my mom and chit chatting while my mom looked at the Avon catalog.  Now, women shop Avon online.  Or, I do see shops at the flea market.  When I lived in Virginia, there was an Avon store.  Ah, instant gratification!

Now, before I go off on a tangent about how much I like Avon, let me put a photo up of a really cool Avon polish…

This is Nailwear Pro ‘Luxe Lavender.’  The photobox doesn’t capture the color too well.
Here’s one outside…

That’s just a cool, literally, purple.  This creme isn’t quite a pastel.  I think it’s just a bit too dark to be an out-and-out pastel.

The squared off bottle is easy to hold.  And, the top, being squared off as well, makes polishing quick.  The brush isn’t skimpy.  It loads up a nice amount of polish and applies very smoothly.

This is in the sunny window.  Not a terribly clear photo but you can see the shine.  This is two coats of color.  I needed that as only 1 made bald spots.  I have a coat of Seche Clear then Vite.

I’m just going to quit apologizing for my cuticles.  They suck.  I know it.  You know it.  We are all hoping that I can get them moisturized.  I did some swatching today and remembered to put on some Lemony Flutter before the photo shoot.

Anyhoo, I love that the back of this bottle is bare.  You can see for yourself that this is a cremey, dreamy lavender.  It’s a color I love.  But I bet you wouldn’t like it so much if the bride picked this shade for your bride’s maid dress.

Did you know that purple is pink’s cousin twice removed?  Yes, you can discover this on heritage.com!  So, don’t you think a cousin purple giveaway would make a nice theme?  I’m just sayin’……

New Polish, New Love

Just a few days ago, I spotted an endcap at CVS FULL of two new lines of polish!  I was more giddy than a teen on her first date.

One of the first picks was of this beauty…

This is Confetti’s Moonstruck.  I wasn’t all into the color until after I finished the manicure.

What an interesting color.  It’s a medium gray but it has purple too.  So here’s my attempt at deciphering the color: a dusty, deep lavender gray.

This photo outdoors captures the color quite honestly.

There’s nothing outstanding about the application.  First coat was almost opaque, the second did the deed.  I have on BS, 2 coats of Moonstruck, 2 coats of Seche Clear and finishing with Seche Vite.

Work has been very heavy this month.  Not complaining!  Just sported this mani longer than 4 days.  And the wear was minimal.  That’s the very best thing about this kiddo.  It dried ok, it applied ok and it removed off ok.  With that, I’d say it performed pretty darn good for a buck ninety-nine polish.

A nice sunny day to show off a cool color and dry cuticles.  I’m working on the cuticles with lots of Lemony Flutter and Haken Cuticle Oil.  The photo isn’t showing the great shine that this one has but, my thumb does a fairly good job of it.  You can see just a bit of tip wear.  I don’t usually wrap my polish though.

The sunny window does a better job of showing the shiny gloss of this creme.  Or, is it ‘cream.’  No, it’s ‘creme.’  I’ll call it a winner.

What do you think of this color?  Be honest; I don’t have stock in the polish. 😉 I sure didn’t think it was my cup of tea but, I picked it because blogging about nail polish moves me away from my typical pinks and reds.

Are there enough photos to make the review optimal?  I’m still a newbie (and how long will it take til I’m not a newbie anymore?) so I’m just using my own interpretation of great makeup blogs I follow.  I like the ones with lots of photos.  Constructive criticism is always appreciated. 🙂

Oh…yea…P.S. I will be announcing a giveaway soon! I’m excited about it too!!!! 😀

Overall Beauty Mineral Shadows

I have to say, these swatches do NOT give proper justice to the dazzle and coverage of Minerals by Overallbeauty.  I got to sample 4 eye shadows and they are AWESOME!!!!

First, I want you to know that I am a huge, huge fan of mineral makeup.  I seriously have about 200 different mineral shadows.  (Hey, you have to give me a break…they don’t spoil and I’ve been collecting them for almost 8 years!)  And with that, I’m going to be a self-proclaimed expert customer on them.

Here’s what I got…

The shadow brush is from Overall Beauty too.  It’s a hypo-allergenic nylon brush that works like a charm!!  I haven’t used any other shadow brush for overall shadow applications since I got this.  I did worry a bit that I had ruined it when I used my brush cleaner. But after it dried, I fluffed out the bristles and they fell right into place again.  Sweet!

That little, clear plastic bag that the shadows came in is cool too.  Not flimsy and I can use it over and over.

Here’s a close up of the shadows…

Not a disappointment in any of these shades.  They sparkle, they shimmer and they perform.  If there is a downside, there is just one; there is a sticker on the top, as shown here.  And, one on the bottom of the pot too, thus, it’s difficult to see what the color is in the pot.  But, the print on the top, labeling its name, is very easy to read and see.

My swatches do NOT show you the deep pigmentation and magical sparkle these colors have.  I’m really disappointed that I could not get a half way decent photo of these…

Gads!!!  My forearm looks damn scary!!  The bulge is a vein!!  I must have pumped iron on that day.  OK, moving on.  From left to right, Heart Breaker, Honeydew, Lavender, Fairy Dust.  This photo was taken indoors by the sunny window.

Same order here in the sun-shiny light…

I don’t get it.  The Fairy Dust is super-duper sparkly and the others IRL were much heavier in color.  That’s so sad because they are simply some of the most beautiful shadows I have in my collection.  I tried swatching them on my eyelid too but that didn’t photo well, either (I’ll get better at it, promise).  If you go to Overall Beauty’s site, the swatch there is much better than my feeble attempt here.

The first color I swatched is ‘Heart Breaker.’  It’s a red brick, terra cotta color with those fab sparkles. I didn’t think I’d like this color (terra cotta reminds me of when I unjoyfully lived in Santa Fe…everything was that color!), but once I got it on my eyelid, I seriously gasped.  Unlike terra cotta, this baby had shimmer…lots of it.  It applied like silk; not a bit patchy.  I did use Urban Decay Primer on my lids, and, did for all these apps.

Then there is Honeydew.  It surprised me too.  The color reminds me of vanilla ice cream.  You know the kind that has a ‘vanilla’ color to it?  That’s this one and with that high shimmery sparkle.  I used it as a highlighter on my brow bone and got mega ‘pop.’  This could be added to a body lotion and it would make a beautiful body shimmer.  I used it in some leave-in conditioner and loved the sparkles in my hair.  Just a tiny bit was used.  I didn’t want to look like I had a collision with a fairy!  Perfect glide on app, here too.

The third color is Lavender.  I think of Lavender as pink’s fraternal twin.  This soft purple doesn’t have the sparkles as much as it has an iridescent sheen. If you are bold enough, it works as a brow bone highlighter.  I also tried it as an overlay on other shadows and it ‘irridescent-ed’ them.  (Making up words is perfectly normal in nail/makeup blog world, I have come to realize.)  I played around with Lavender and added a tiny speck of it to a powder blush to give it a dewy look.  I even brushed a bit onto a matte lipstick on the lips and that made a whole new color out of it. Nice!

Lastly, there is Fairy Dust.  Because I have already gone on and on, I won’t list all the properties of this multi-tasker; there’s just too many.  Maybe endless!  I used it as a brow bone highlighter but it didn’t pull off the look I like for this.  However, it was a star when I patted it over a finished shadow look.  When you think of what color Fairy Dust could be, you’re apt to be right on the money with this fun one.  Sparkly…check.  Twinkly…check.   Irridescent…triple check.  It flashes pink and lavender sparkles that are tiny so it isn’t like glitter.  I did try this on with a lipstick and you need the tiniest, tiny amount.  My first use I used too much and looked like my lips where ready to be a stand-in for Lady Gaga. =o
But I loved rubbing a bit onto my leave-in hair conditioner.  (You know by now I LOVE me some…OK…a LOT of sparkle and glitter.  This blog could have so easily be called Glitter is My Crack but the exotic beauty Blix called dibs on it first.)

It’s easy to see how much fun I had testing these mineral shadows out.  And having the perfect brush to use made it a winning team.  If you like your shadows to be bold, pigmented and go on easy…here’s your grail.  But even if you like a more demure look, don’t shy away from Overall Beauty’s Minerals.  You control how much you want to apply.  Having said that, you get a lot of mileage on these shadows; a little goes a long way.

Oh, just one more thing to show you…

All these goodies where sent to me by Kim Snyder, owner of Overall Beauty.  And she sent them to me along with this handmade pouch!  Pink!!!  Cute!!!  Gosh, and it was even lined!  So, add quality in with the cuteness.  You can see the tag of Little Worm’s Etsy site.  Not expensive either.

Which color do you like the best?  Do you use minerals?  And, do you have over 200 different colors?  Just how would you use that cute pouch?

All these products were sent to me by Kim at www.overallbeauty.com for my personal use and honest review.

Metal Gear Nails

A pedicure and a manicure can make you feel so pampered.   And, having professional ones makes all the difference.  I, finally!, got that pedicure that was needed.  And the manicure helped tame my cuticles and shape my nails uniformly.

Here’s Sally Hansen’s Complete Salon Manicure in ‘Pedal to the Metal.’  This picture is taken at the sunny window.

Here’s the sunshiny, outside light one.  That’s some strange anomaly on the ring finger.  Not there in real life.

There…that’s better.  And this is a much better representation of this color.  It’s a dusty, lavender, slightly metallic flavor.  Oh, and the husband had on the matching shirt.  Just by accident…

And what a great pedicure!  I got one with lots of massaging.  And sloughing.  And tidying up the nails.  Here’s a cutie, Eva Supreme Nail Laquer in ‘Paris’…

Outside in some beautiful sunlight.  It was rare today, but I got some!

A closer look of my mermaid-colored toes and the lacquer.

The sunny window did a fair job of catching this frosty, light green polish.  It makes me think of sea foam.  Even though real sea foam is white. :p  It looks like a very pale green metallic.

Both of these are with 2 coats after a BS.  At the salon she put a top coat on and when I got home I added 2 coats of Seche Clear and then finished with Seche Vite.

Both colors are pale and pastel.  I think they are very light and feminine.  Neither my hands or feet are screaming ‘COLOR’!!!!

And flashing back…here is an eye shadow from Essence I picked up at Ulta on Friday:

Not only does it match the tank top I was wearing, but it goes with my nails as well.  This ‘new to me orange’ is called ‘Wild One’ from the Sparkling Line.  The photo doesn’t quite show the shadow’s sparkles.  It looks, actually, matte in the photo.  But it has a shimmer with teeny little sparkles.

‘Wild One’ is an appropriate name, I never used orange shadow.  I feel wild wearing orange, and blue for that matter, eye shadows.  However, I have seen some super cute makeup blogs and tutorials using orange.  There’s MissChievous , Lauren Luke and Frantastic  just a few of my very favorites.  I liked the look so I’m going for it!  Caution to the wind!  I’m deviating from a middle-aged woman to a wanton girl!  Yea…I know…that’s really funny.  Or…scary.

Airy Mani

This is a mani I did a couple of days ago.

Out in the sun; reduced sticker still on.

Sunny window light that doesn’t show a true color at all.

This one I picked up on the clearance table at Sally’s Beauty.  It’s called ‘Light as Air’ by China Glaze.  A creamy, dusty lavender.  I like this one very much.

This polish is the one I used on my toes.  No toe shows.  My hand nails look very dry but, my toes are worse off.  I’m too embarrassed to torture you with those pictures.  However, the polish I choose is a very pretty one.  It’s a new display at Sally’s Beauty.  This color is ‘Pink Fairy.’  And that’s exactly what it makes me think of.

Just look at that shimmer and sparkle. I fun duo that’s pink and purple.  It’s pretty sheer though.  And the richness of the duo doesn’t reflect fully on the nail.
It was hit and miss with getting in that sunshine shot.  (oh, say that a couple of times fast!)  Here’s the growing thunderstorm I was dealing with.

Even though they call Florida the ‘Sunshine State,’ there are thunderstorms often during the summer to give us that nice, sultry, hot and humid weather. (sarcasm)

Got a cream polish that you just adore?  How often do you get professional pedicures?  I’m SO due!!
