A Grand Blue Christmas

Here’s something I got for Christmas…

Fresh, new-fallen snow. Living in Orlando, this was a wonderful Christmas gift. I went to Denver to see my family over Christmas and it snowed the evening I got in.

Before I left, I happened to pick up a new Sally’s Girl polish. Alas, it has no name, but I think it is pretty…

Just a cute silvery, dusty blue that has a shimmer. But, I didn’t stop there.
Here’s what Sally’s Girl polish looks like all by itself…

The second photo isn’t as good as the first, but I wanted to show that the first one has a glare on it; not a ding.

However, I wanted to play with my new Finger Paint flakies some more and I thought this dusty blue was just the right pairing.

First, on my left hand, I used ‘Flashy’…

Even though I did 3 coats of Sally’s Girl, I only did one of ‘Flashy.’ I think another coat would have made the flakes show more.

On my right hand, I used ‘Twisted’…

Remember, it is my ring finger, here, that has no flakies on it. Again, just one coat of ‘Twisted.’ I do wish I would have remembered to apply two coats.

Sally’s Girl dusty blue is pretty. But if you have ever purchased one of these, you know the bottle is puny, the brush is sub par, and the top sometimes doesn’t stay attached to the brush. If you know these things going in, then you’ll know you get what you pay for, most of the time. I was, most definitely, wanting it for the color.

Tomorrow, I’ll show you Sally’s Girl with a different top coat and see how that strikes your fancy.

I had a grand time with my family this Christmas. My brother and his family live in Denver. My sister and her husband, my dad and step-mom, and my sister’s daughter and family all came in. We had a house full. A lot of things happened during that week and one of the best things to come out of it…I realized that my sister-in-law is one of my best friends.

Did you have a grand Holiday too?

Nubar Has Great Glitter Just Not Great Names

When I started blogging, almost 18 months ago, I learned about Nubar nail polish. What I read was it was held in high regard. So, in June of this year, I went to the Orlando Premiere and when I visited the Nubar booth, I dropped some bucks.

Now, I don’t read about Nubar so much. I don’t know why. However, here is one that I bought and it works sort of nicely for the Holidays…

Nubar’s ‘Green/Silver Glitter’ isn’t a bold glitter. And I’m liking that after swatching a lot of SCREAMING glitter.

This polish has micro-glitter, and though it looks like there is so much in there that it would apply opaque…let me set you straight. Nope.

I have on 4 coats. Yet, I’m happy with this lighter look. I can still appreciate the softer looks of glitter as well. The silver seems to be more iridescent than just plain silver. It casts off many different colors in the sunshine. I can somewhat see that happening on my ring finger.

Take a closer look, I want to show you something…

This is what 4 coats looks like. Not bad. And, yes, it is gritty. It’s hungry like Santa is for cookies. But, there is something else I want you to see. A nail and its cuticle in DAMN GOOD shape!!! WORD!!!!!

After a super easy work day, I came home excited to swatch a new polish. But a light bulb went off…how would it look matted?

I gave it a try. It dulled it some, but not like I thought it would. That glitter is determined to sparkle!!!

I used China Glaze’s ‘Matte Magic’. I don’t think it changed it enough to bother.

Is ‘Green/Sliver Glitter’ something you like too?

Copy Cats, Round Deux(P)

Thanks so much for the feedback letting me know you like dupe posts as much as I do.

Here are a couple more for you to check out…

These twins, separated at birth, are China Glaze’s ‘Lorelei’s Tiara’ and Sally Hansen’s ‘ShowGirl Chic.’ ‘Lorelei’s Tiara’ comes from the 3-D Glitter collection. ‘ShowGirl Chic’ is from the Gem Crush collection. I have acquired all of the polishes, in this post, in the last 2 weeks; brand new stuff.

Here’s a side by side. Cameras do weird things with contrasting sparkles, like here. If you look at the top photo, of the Sally Hansen polish, that is a totally accurate color representation. The bottom photo, even though they still look the same, it looks as if they are smoky or grey. They are not.

On the nails…I used SH’s ‘ShowGirl Chic’ on the thumb, middle and pinky. China Glaze is on the index and ring finger. These polishes are stuffed with silver glitter. Then for a playful splash, there is a bit of deep teal glitter added.

Very hard to see a difference…

The index and the middle finger look so close. I’m not sure why the ring finger looks more pigmented. I did 2 coats on all nails and I didn’t use any top coat. I didn’t figure I needed to because, well, just look at all that sparkle!!

That was the left hand, and here is what I did on the right hand…and yes, I wore these to work just like you see here…

On the left is China Glaze’s ‘Love Marilyn’. The Sally Hansen is called ‘Cha-Ching!’ These both are from the same collections mentioned above. The photos put up a noticeable difference, not a huge one though. The dominant glitter color is, of course, red…lots of it. And then to spice it up, a pinch or two of regular size silver glitter. (I was thinking ‘Rudolph Puke’….LOL!!)

In the direct sunlight, it seems that ‘Love Marilyn’ has denser glitter.

So, let’s see how they play out on the nails…

Again, just the slightest bit of difference. Not much. The SH is on the thumb, middle and pinky. China Glaze is on the index and ring finger.  I did experience some drag with ‘Love Marilyn’ and you can even see a bald spot on my thumb with ‘Cha-Ching!’

However, these reds are blinged out sparkly. The SH applied OK, but, in both comparisons, the China Glaze went on smoother. Close up, it shows that ‘Cha-Ching!’ is not as dense in glitter as ‘Love Marilyn.’

Here’s my thoughts on these comparisons: you do not need both unless you are a hoarder polish blogger/lover like me. The differences are slight and, in person, only noticeable to a very discerning eye. But if you want a super-duper, sparkly Christmas look, both colors are going to do you right.

The China Glaze applied the easiest. All were gritty so if you don’t like that feel, you will not like these. I don’t mind it. Wear was good for the day I had it on. These colors made me feel festive and cheery. But they must have loved me just as much because they didn’t want to leave me (aka…scrubbed to get them removed). I only used 2 coats and no top coat. That was a real winner as well.

Are they close enough for you that you wouldn’t need both? Which color do you like best?

Three Polish Brands; One Big Holiday Polish Haul

These are my recent nail polish hauls. And it’s a haulage!!

I got these at Sally’s. I wanted to get ‘Ingenue’ as well, but it was gone!

These two polishes are from Orly’s Holiday Soiree collection. On the left, the gawdawesome ‘Androgynie’. The one on the right, that’s ‘Oui’.

Go ahead and take a closer look…

‘Androgynie’…the final frontier. The baby lacey nail file is cute but utterly useles.

‘Oui’ to a gold and silvery-purple duochrome.

Lovely shades. Nothing terribly new, but these are the shades of polish I like. You can see some ‘hot damn’ swatches of this collection at I Drink Nail Polish’s blog.

I was at the right place at the right time to get this collection from China Glaze…

This China Glaze collection is from the one called Eye Candy 3-D. I don’t know what the 3-D part is because these polishes have no more or less depth to them than any other glitters. But, maybe I missed getting the free 3-D glasses that should have come with these.  I did get in on the sale at Ulta though. I bought 2 and got 1 free. At first, I was only going to get 5 but since that sixth one was free, I got them all.

The first one above is called ‘Lorelei’s Tiara.’ That’s the one that has silver glitter and then some teal glitter swirling around within. That is one of the more unique looks.

Next to that is ‘Marry A Millionaire’. Great saying that goes with a medium purple glitter with holo bar glitter. Another rather new look to me.

And then the last one in this line up is a gold glitter; ‘Blonde Bombshell.’ This is the one I wasn’t going to get at first. It’s a gold glitter but has these larger sizes of gold glitter as well. I feel I have to get my nose right down into it to see the differences in the sizes, however.

Next set…

From left over to right; ‘Material Girl’; ‘Some Like it Haute (named after one of my favorite movies); and then ‘Love Marilyn.’

‘Material Girl’ is a dusty pink glitter with larger sized pink holo glitter.

Next is ‘Some Like It Haute.’ This one is another favorite. It’s a dark, slate gray and has holo glitter suspended in it. Last is ‘Love Marilyn’ and this is a gorgeous red glitter sprinkled with silver glitter.

There’s ‘Androgenie’ next to ‘Some Like It Haute’…

I know they are not the same and the only similarities can be they are both dark and have holo glitter. However, when you put them side by side, they actually bring out the unique flavor of each other.

Blurred for shimmer, you can see both are full of holographic glitter. ‘Androgynie’ has the larger hex shaped pieces.

And lastly, I found the Nicole By OPI’s Holiday Glitter collection. I picked up just two…

On the left, ‘Orna-ment For Each Other’. Now that’s a Santa suit red! It’s got speckles of gold glitter within a sea of red glitter. Ho Ho Ho!

And on the right, that’s ‘Glitter In My Stocking.’ It’s a bright gold glitter that has red and copper glitter thrown in for some major holiday awe-ness.

They look like glitter tree ornaments, don’t they?

There were a total of 4 shades to this collection. One was a fuchsia glitter (‘My Sleigh Is In The Shop) and the other was a bright blue with a rainbow assortment of colored micro-glitter called  ‘Snowman of My Dreams.’ I hemmed and hawed over that one and I think I’ve convinced myself that I will have to go back and get it.

I better get busy and Holiday Swatch! Do you have any of these or, are there some here that you know you’ll get?

Tinsel Town on a Wintery, Snowy Night

There’s no waiting til the last minute to confess. I’m a firm believer that it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. In this case, I’m giving myself permission to only buy polishes I like.

Yes, I mean it. I have this on the same list as ‘eat fruit every day.’ So far, so good. I have had today, alone, Juicy Fruit and Cherry Coke Zero.

I wore this polish last week and when I went to show a couple of friends, my mind went blank. (What? You are STILL laughing?) I couldn’t remember any more than it was a new shade out and it was China Glaze. Awkward.

Maybe I was too busy being smittened…

It’s China Glaze and it is from their current Let It Snow collection. This is ‘Tinsel Town.’

I don’t have anything quite like it in my collection…

‘Tinsel Town’ is another color that is hard to pin down to describe. It’s in the family of grays. However, it is a gray that is a bit blueish and a bit silvery. Then it has all this different size silvery gray glitter in it. What comes to mind is the color of a shadow from a full moon, cast onto the snow.

I even wore a knit dress the same color, without meaning to…

When I was in school and then in college, I would rewrite my class notes to study for a test. I’ll look at this post as a rewrite of my notes so I don’t forget that this is from China Glaze’s 2011 Holiday collection called Let It Snow. This lovely glittery gray is called ‘Tinsel Town.’

Got it! A+

Have you ever had your mind just totally go blank when someone asks you what polish you are wearing?

A Pleasant Surprise Pairing Up

As much as I’m on the computer, I’d think I would have read that blogger is changing. Well, I do know that its new name will be Google Blog or Glob Boogle…something like that. ;p

This isn’t a thought-out manicure. I just picked. But, I like pleasant surprises, right?

This tiny Color Club doesn’t have a name but I still love it. Here’s why…

This is a metallic silver with gold micro-glitter. I can see the glitter in the photos, but it isn’t showing up as gold.
Next, is an unusual crackle color…

Mia Secret’s Crackle Polish ‘Sky.’ I picked this up from a new display at the Beauty Supply Store that I get Kleancolor products. So, I know that the Mia Secret crackles were new in the store. But, the separation of the polish makes me wonder just how old is ‘Sky’? I wonder if ‘Sky’ is as old as…dirt. *goes off to ponder*

This light shade of turquoise is not one that I would like by itself. However, because ‘Sky’ was a crackle shade I have not seen before, I got it. And with a quick pairing up…

Here’s what I got…

I like it! What do you think? ‘Sky’ crackles very well. It applies with ease and is a friendly polish; you don’t have to rush to get it on before it starts to drag.

As with crackles, ‘Sky’ dries matte. I left it that way.

This is a pleasant surprise. And it made me smile.

Are you smiling too?

Today’s Southern Orlando Haul

I woke up today feeling pretty yucky. I had a ‘recovery day’ scheduled from running, so I pushed myself into that. I had a feeling of a fever but I did my ‘pretend’ jump rope workout anyway. (I jump rope but don’t have a real rope to use; just go through the movements with my arms.) I had a work project scheduled early this morning, it was already 80 degrees before 10 AM, but I went and did it anyway. I wanted to come home and be inside where it is cool. However,  I went to Ulta (it really is on the way home) and made sure I used my $9 in points and my $3.50 off $10 coupon today.

Even then, I went to a large mall do finish up more work so I wouldn’t have to do it tomorrow. But I stopped in Forever 21 anyway and found some polish.

Semi-soothing, here are the goods…

Sparkle babies. From left on: Currant, Silver and Coral.

But you have to check them out up close to get a good looky…

Currant. I merlot shade with red and gold glitter.

Silver. It is a much lighter shade of silver IRL, with iridescent micro-glitter.

Coral. A pinkish coral shade with red and fuchsia micro-glitter. This one might be a jelly. I’m not sure yet.

BUT WAIT!!!!! THERE’S MORE!!!!!!

Early July 4th sparklers! From the left on: Purple/Silver, Green/Clear and Red/Black/Silver. Oh, those names got me excited!!! *rolls eyes, one way then back the other*

Silver/Purple. The base is clear with chunks of silver and a red-purple hexagon glitter.

Green/Clear. A clear base with chunky leaf green and silver hexagon glitter.

Red/Black/Silver. Again, a clear base with chunks of very red, black and silver hexagon glitter.

Any one of these three hexy glitters could make some interesting nail ‘sammich’ manicures.  I’m ready to experiment!

I did stop by CVS in the mall to check to see if I could find anything new. I found the new Limited Edition NYC polishes…

The coupons at the front expired on 6/1/11. Not nice. But one polish did come home with me (where at least 2 unexpired NYC coupons are)…

This is ‘Gramercy Glitz.’ It’s a pink, almost totally clear, base with tons of baby girl pink and iridescent micro-glitter. Not exactly a new shade but the kind I tend to gravitate to.

I’m a chick from the Midwest, I had to look this one up: Gramercy Park (/ˌgræmᵊrsi ˈpɑːrk/) is a small, fenced-in private park in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, United States.

It looks lovely. I’d like to visit it. Some day. When I go to New York. Where my hubs is from. NYC, where he got his Masters. Yea…some day.

See any shades that tickle your fancy?

Purple, Pretty Please

A second life for ‘Alter Ego,’ which I showed in my last post

‘Alter Ego’ has to have other sides. I went to explore them. Also, I have sort of a fetish with all these shatter and crackle effects. I didn’t get into them the last time they trended. I didn’t even know about them! Looks like I’m going to be able to this time around and, in a plethora of brands and colors.

So, here is a shatter on ‘Alter Ego.’ This is OPI’s ‘Silver Shatter’ from their current ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ collection. ‘Silver Shatter’ makes you work fast. Put it on and quickly move onto the next nail. Don’t fuss with it!

Next, is a crackle.  This is Sally Hansen’s ‘Vintage Violet’…

I found ‘Vintage Violet’ to be a thicker polish but it did allow time to easily apply before it took affect. And, maybe the thicker coat made for large chunks of the crackle.

I can’t pick which one I like best; they are both awesome…

‘Vintage Violet’s top was on super tight. I had to pull out the muscles to get it opened. And when I finally did…ut oh…

Poor thing is brush challenged. That made application a bit more tricky. Luckily, I like the color well enough to get over it.

Are you ready to be looking at the crackle/shatter trend through the rest of the year?

Pick 3 Polishes Challenge

I was up for the challenge, I just couldn’t pull it off.

The lovely, C, at Lacquerware For Tips and Toes, gave out a nail blogging challenge.  She suggested grabbing the first 3 bottle of polish you can get out of your stash, and make some type of art with it.  Sounds fun!  Check over at her blog to see the other bloggers that joined in on the fun.

Here’s what I grabbed…

I picked my three from three different stashes and they all ended up being China Glaze.  Weird.  The first one I grabbed was the Matte Top Coat.  Right then I knew it was going to be at least ‘interesting.’  Next was ‘Hey Doll’ and lastly, I chose ‘Hologram.’

There were two different designs following in my skull.  Here was the first one…

First, I taped off my nails in a diagonal.  I polished with ‘Hey Doll’, two coats.  Then I put on the Matte Top Coat.  After drying, I took off the tape and did the other side in ‘Hologram’.  Once that dried, I took a Stripe Rite pen, and in black, put a single stripe offsetting the two colors.  Then I put on a top coat, just on the stripe and over ‘Hologram’.

Truly, I do not have a steady hand.  Grrr… But, you get the idea, just not a clear idea.

Then, just for kicks, I did the other idea I had…

I only am showing these because I accepted the challenge; definitely not to show off great work.  It’s not great at all.  And the colors and design are interesting, at the most.  I wanted to keep my word to Laquer For Tips and Toes.  She is, truly, a sweetheart and, I recommend you follow her blog.  That’s where you’ll see the cool stuff. 🙂

Here’s who I tag…check out their blogs because they are some of the best out there…

Narcissistic Nail Porn

That title will reel ya in!!! 😉

The dictionary says that narcissistic is:

–noun

1.

inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity.
2.

Psychoanalysis . erotic gratification derived from admiration of one’s own physical or mental attributes, being a normal condition at the infantile level of personality development.

So, am I a baby for loving this?…

Then, so be it!!!!  I love it too much to care if I’m being narcissistic.  I’m too busy getting off on my nail polish.  LOL!

It was time to get my nails filled.  I always take my own polish because then, I can touch them up if I need to.  Today I just happen to glance at the shelf they have of polishes to choose.  I saw a line up of 5!!! different colored holographic polishes!!!  Greedily, I snatched this one up and stuffed that Tronica I brought deep in my pocket!
This is from a company called ‘BTouch’.  I googled it and came up with a distributor of beauty products in China.  Doesn’t look like an easy way to order though.  Ebay proved fruitless.  And as much as I begged the owner of the salon to sell me that collection of holos, she wouldn’t do it.  She said that she had just received them.  Gosh, there was a blue, gold, green (looked like a Christmas disco!), purple and red and this one.  It is called ‘Multi Color Glitter.’  This company is really cheated the polishes by calling them ‘glitter’.  Not one was named as a holograph.

The tech only put on 2 thin coats.  I would have made them a bit more thick to get rid of the VNL.  Geez, I don’t care if I walk around with VPL if I can have this on my nails!

Talk about a lemming!!!  I want these polishes and I want them NOW!!!  My quest isn’t finished until I can find them.

The polish is a bit gritty and I bet I’ll have to scrub to get it to come off.  However, that is going to be a some time down the road.  I plan on wearing this for many days considering I don’t have the nail polish at my disposal.  I might be reviewing other beauty products for a while. 😉

I think this can be a dupe for many others we have available.  Would you need to get another one, if you had the chance?  How do you feel about being narcissistic with your nails?  Are you OK with that?
