My Recent Order From Southern Magnolia Minerals

Last weekend, I received my order from Southern Magnolia Minerals. The order I received previously had a promotion where I got several samples with my order. Two of these samples prompted me to order full size. Here’s what I got…

Fixative Shadow Gel, Eye Silk Creme Sample,  Anti-Wrinkle Lip Rescue Firming Contour Cream, Hair and Skin Tonic, and Pretty Amazing Copper Shadow Sample.

In a post I did here, I mentioned that I have been a customer of SMM for easily over five years. I think it really has been about eight years now. When I got my samples, I couldn’t wait to start using them. The two that I had to get full sizes of are the Lip Rescue Cream and the Hair and Skin Tonic.

The Lip Rescue Cream has been THE best product I have ever used on my lips to make them smooth and soft. My lips have not been peeling, dry or rough since I started using this cream. The smell is pleasant and even though I don’t lick my lips, I’m not getting a taste from it. I use it several times a day because it just feels so soft on my lips. And I use it around the skin of my lips as well. This cream has found a permanent place on the vanity!

Next, is the Hair and Skin Tonic. I didn’t know what to do with this tonic, at first. But, SMM’s website has wonderful descriptions of their products that it didn’t take me long to figure out this was a do-it-all product…

Oh my goodness, all the things I use this for: face moisturizer, eye cream, hair moisturizer, and frizzy hair tamer. There isn’t hardly a scent to this and it is so light that there is no way I can get build up. I love how soft my skin feels after applying it. My skin drinks it in and there is nothing greasy or heavy about this tonic.

Now, just who does not think that this is the most stinkin’ cute sample jar EVER…

This is a sample of Eye Silk Cream. Barb is the owner of SMM and when I emailed her to ask what this cream is for, she got back to me, as she always has, so quickly. She said that it is used around the eye area for moisturizing either alone or before other skin products like her Cucumber De-puffing Eye Gelee. I have been using it before I use an anti-aging eye cream. Eye Silk Cream is. yet again. another SMM product that makes my skin feel moisturized and soft.

I purchased the Fixative Shadow Gel as a shadow primer and a gel to make my mineral shadow powders into eyeliners.

So far, I have only used it as a mix for eyeliner. It doesn’t take but a tiny speck of the gel to create a mixture of liner. It applies very evenly and that liner didn’t budge until it was time to wash my face. The gel makes for a fun way to create bold and creative eyeliners.

Last, I got a sample of a copper mineral shadow…

This was the first shadow I used the Fixative Shadow Gel to make an eyeliner. If you have ever used mineral shadows, you know how versatile they are. And SMM makes very pigmented shadows. The swatch I have in the photo, that is without the fixative; it’s just a swipe with a shadow brush.

Southern Magnolia Minerals has specials almost weekly. Check out the website and ‘like’ the Facebook page to get in on the deals. The Pink Vanity has many SMM products on it and I have found a few new beauty staples to sit on the vanity.

All items were purchased by me except for the samples. This review is my honest opinion and I am in no way compensated for my review.

Toss or Trash: March 2012 Part 3

OK…let’s wrap this segment up and put a cherry one top!

This third, and final, part finishes up with the body products…

Starting at the left: Bath and Body Work’s Apple Blossom Citrus body lotion; CeraVe PM Facial Lotion; Proclaim Natural 7 Oil; Southern Magnolia Minerals Hair and Skin Tonic; The Healing Garden Organics Pomegranate and Vanilla body spray.

These are all keepers!

Let me start with the Bath and Body Works lotion. I get the small sample bottles when they release them prior to the full size. I liked this one so I got the ‘main three’ that I get from B&BW; shower gel, body lotion and body spray. I liked this fragrance because it smells very fresh and clean.

The Proclaim 7 Oil I got at Sally’s. Now I have used this for a long time because the Sally’s I visit does not carry the Ginseng Miracle Oil that is sort of the same. The difference, to me, is the smell. Ginseng is more delightful. Anyhoo, the main oil in Proclaim is olive oil. I have been using this at night, along with cotton gloves, to help soften my cuticles. I found the Ginseng Oil just recently, so I’m using that now.

Ooohhh, let me tell you my love for the Healing Gardens body mist! I LOVE the smell of this. In a nutshell, I have only found this one time at Walgreens, some time back. It was a display sitting behind another, different one on the new product shelf. You know my snoopy self, I found it and wanted it. It didn’t ring up at the register. They called the store manager back and she said that it wasn’t suppose to be out and couldn’t sell it to me. As you can see from the photo, I won.

The CeraVe is a free sample I got at the Southern Women’s Home Show last year. I’ll save this for a Sample Sunday review.

Now, the best for last. If you read my blog often, you may have come across my posts for the best mineral foundation in the world: Southern Magnolia Minerals. This is an indy company that I have been purchasing my minerals from for well over 5 years, if not more. I got this Hair and Skin Tonic as a sample in my last order.

Is this something that I can use on my skin AND my hair? Yep! And I do. I just placed my order for the full size this weekend. Southern Magnolia Minerals had a weekend special where everything was 50%!!! I’ll do a full review on this tonic at a later date. I’ll leave with saying it smells great and works!!!

Do you see anything of interest? Have you tried any of these and would like to comment?

Tool Tuesday: Retractable Pump Brush For Mineral Foundation

I went to the coast to visit clients today and all I could think about was sharing this Tool Tuesday with you!

So far, I’ve been showing beauty tools that I have and use all the time. This one is no exception, except I will NOT go without one!

I have had these foundation pump brushes forever!!!…

I got these many years ago from my favorite foundation company, Southern Magnolia Minerals. Barbara, the owner, has improved versions of the pump brushes here, and if you purchase now, you can get 25% off.

This is a brush that has a reservoir of mineral foundation or finishing powder so that when you press the brush against your skin, a small amount of the powder is pumped into the brush. This is very convenient to carry because you don’t have to tote around a jar or container of the minerals as well as a brush; this is both.

These have clear caps that cover the brush, and the sides of the pump come up to protect the bristles. It’s that easy. I have one with my foundation, and I carry that in my makeup bag. The other is with the finishing powder and I keep that one in the console of my car.

Even before I moved to this oven state, I used these pump brushes. I do have normal to dry skin but, I will get shiny as the day goes on. No problem with my pump brushes. I can do a fast touch up before leaving the car. Virtually no mess since it is all self-contained and, since it is powder, no worry about it melting in the car or my purse.

The bottom of the brush screws off and I can tap in some powder. With just a couple of pumps onto the back of my hand, I’ve dispensed some powder into the bristles and I’m ready to buff away any shine I don’t want. A filled up reservoir lasts me months and when I get low, these are refillable.

When I travel, these 2 brushes are all I take for foundation and finishing powder. They are small enough to throw into my makeup bag but have enough powder to last me weeks.

As I have mentioned, I’ve had these two brushes for a very long time. And with Southern Magnolia Minerals having a special discount on them, now is a good time to get that upgrade.

Have you tried any powder dispensing brushes before?

My ‘Can’t Live Without’ Product; Translucent Finishing Veil

Tomorrow evening is the drawing for a $20 gift certificate to Southern Magnolia Minerals. Go here and enter!

My skin is dry. However, after a couple of hours, I get oily. And in Florida I can get oily AND sweaty. That’s a big GROSS to me. Having a sweaty face is the hardest to bear in this sub-tropical place.

Here’s the Southern Magnolia Minerals solution; it’s my favorite too.

Translucent Finishing Veil, ‘Purely Basic‘…

This is my ultimate, completely, best ever favorite. I have used this product for at least 8 years.
Here is what Southern Magnolia Minerals website has to say about my baby…

A fabulous translucent primer or finalizer and can be used as a base layer under your favorite SMMCosmetics foundation color or as a finalizer after applying all of your favorite colors for an airbrushed flawless finish.

Don’t let the color fool you…It is white until you apply it to the skin, then it becomes translucent! Helps minimize the appearance of large pores, control shine, set makeup and offers sun protection.

Have you every used a liquid SPF on your face? Eew! I feel suffocated. But, I really do need that protection. Four different jobs in just one product. The price is right too. I got my first one in the Full Size jar. Then I just get the Refill Bag when that empties. Large pores, control shine, set makeup and get sun protection? Of course you can count me in!

Next is a product that I have been using for about 4 years. It’s just a bit different than the ‘Purely Basics‘ and if you have some allergies, this might work better for you. Here’s ‘Shine Reduction Powder‘…

Here’s what the website says about this…

This uniquely formulated shine reduction powder uses kosher grade Rice Powder and Authentic Silk Powder to create a translucent enhancement powder specifically designed to eliminate undesirable shine caused by oily skin surfaces. This super-sheer powder leaves the skin so smooth and clean with a natural finish!
Pure Silk contains 18 amino acids which are easily absorbed into the skin, also reflects and absorbs UV rays. Silk has anti-inflammation qualities, which effectively helps sun-damaged skin, acne and other skin problems.
Silk is a natural moisture-adjusting product which can absorb or release moisture as the temperature and humidity change. It is also a powder which “breathes”. Silk is oil-absorbent and is suitable for oily skin to create a perfect, flawless finish.
Rice Powder is the ancient secret to beauty! Translucent, lightweight and silky. It offers slow oil-absorbing properties, and acts as a soother and emollient forming a soothing, protective translucent film leaving your skin with the ultimate skin softening porcelain shine-free finish.
Honestly, they are both about the same. I don’t know if it is because I have used the ‘Purely Basics‘ the longest that I like it better, but that’s my first choice.
And a jar of this is going to last a VERY long time! This is how much I use to set my makeup…
Buff it on very lightly and it is done. This brush, by the way, is one I got at Ulta.
I’m not sure if you are going to be able to see a difference, but I did swatch them both on my hand…
Just wiped it on so you could see a difference. ‘Purely Basics‘ is on the top and ‘Shine Reduction Powder‘ is on the bottom. Then I blended it in with my brush…
 Here’s it buffed, without a heavy streak…
Brace yourself….here is a ‘before’ face shot. No ‘Purely Basics‘ since this morning around 8 AM…
And here I touched up with ‘Purely Basics‘…
Less shine but you can still see my pink-ish color.
These products are my coup de gras to shiny face. If I didn’t/couldn’t wear foundation, I would blur out the pores and discolorations with ‘Purely Basics’. I use it as a quick touch-up on those days that are humid as hell, and a quick buff if we go out to eat dinner.
Here’s my recommendation, use the discount on SMM’s website and get yourself a sample of these. See which one you like better, and get a discount coupon for a ‘Like‘ on their Facebook page.
Or, see if you can win my giveaway and get a shine-away prize. 🙂

Glow, Baby, Glow And A Giveaway To Glow With It

There has been a lot of debate about whether vampires ‘glitter’ or ‘sparkle’. Come on, folks! Glittery vampires are just a Hollywood thing. Real vampires are usually old and do not fall in love with teenagers. If you think about it, that’s really kind of perverted.

I am not afraid to sparkle, a little bit. But, I don’t want to look like I’ve just played with My Little Pony. So let me show you what I have been using to reflect a bit of light.

I have been using a highlighter from Southern Magnolia Minerals called ‘Petal Pink HD Illuminizer.’ I purchased the starter jar for $6.95. This is a very full 1 gram. The site says it’s good for a month but for me, it will last longer than that.

I use this as a finishing touch to my makeup. I use the big brush you see in the first photo and whisk a teeny little bit all over my face and down my decolletage. Sometimes I will flit a bit down my arms too. Use it anywhere you want to illuminate.

Here are my attempts to swatch ‘Petal Pink’…

Not much to see, right? Well, that’s the point. You don’t want to look like an extra for ‘Twilight.’ Let me make a comparison. I have a ‘sparkle’ from a now defunct makeup company. I do like it, however, sometimes I do not want to sparkle THAT much. The finger swatch is about the total amount I’d use on my face and then some. This is very subtle.

Next is a sample bag I purchased of Southern Magnolia Mineral’s ‘Silk Kiss Glow’.

This illuminizer is another all-over duster. Where ‘Petal Pink’ is pink, well the ‘Silk Kiss Glow’ is gold. A generous amount swatched on my thumb pad.

This is in the shade and it is easier to see the generous amount I have on. In fact, I didn’t use the big brush, I used my finger to swipe.

Hard to see the difference with them separately, but here they are together…

‘Petal Pink’ is on my index and ‘Silk Kiss Glow’ is on my ring finger. (what the???? what is that bump on my ring finger? trust me, it’s a shadow thing. gads.)

As you may know, you can use mineral makeup in many different ways. One that I will be using these for is to add a highlight to my brow bone. And since I love a gleam on my lips, I will mix the minerals with a clear gloss for a hint of gold or pink.

The sample size of ‘Silk Kiss Glow’ is more than enough for over a week’s worth of trials. And if you want to do any color correction with your skin, check out SMM’s other illuminizers.

I recommend both of these powders. There is no glitter or sparkle over-load. It’s subdue and barely there. So, if you want to get some for yourself, you can check out the website and when you place your order, let Barb know that Libby sent you for a 20% off your order. (Pssst…you can get a 25% discount if you sign up for her email!)

If you are feeling lucky, you can enter my giveaway for a $20 gift certificate to Southern Magnolia Minerals. Barb, owner of SMM, has provided an opportunity for one lucky reader to try the products yourself. Just check out her site for all the mineral and beauty items she carries. Enter the giveaway here. It ends this Saturday so don’t wait!

Mineral Makeup Foundation Review or ‘How I Quit Shining’

Libby’s Vanity is holding a giveaway for a $20 gift certificate to one of my favorite makeup companies: Southern Magnolia Minerals. If you would like to enter, jump over here to sign up. Giveaway ends Saturday, 6/11.

Now, read on about why this company is my favorite.

This post is not only about a product I love but, one that is my all-time favorite. My foundation of choice: Southern Magnolia Minerals.

My first introduction to mineral makeup was watching a home shopping television show. I found out that Ulta carried this product,  so I made a special journey there to purchase a kit.

Fast forward about 4 months later; I was sold on how minerals worked on my skin. I liked that it didn’t feel heavy and truly felt like I wasn’t wearing any foundation at all. And, I really was looking for a better price, too. So I went where the competition is heavier: Ebay. I found two different businesses that made their own mineral makeup. I got samples from both and immediately fell in love with Southern Magnolia Minerals. The powder was so easy to apply and it buffed on evenly.

Here are the foundations I use. Since my skin tone changes throughout the year, I do use various shades. Also, the container in the lower right-hand corner is my own. I buy my foundations in bulk and I keep them in these jars rather than in the baggies they come in.

Barb Hoffman, owner of Southern Magnolia Minerals, worked with me in determining what shade I should wear. I purchased a sampling that she suggested and from there I found my love!!

I use Fairly Light as my base foundation. From there I can add in warmth or slightly darker shades as summer comes around, using Fair as my winter shade. Like many users of mineral makeup, I love to play with my shades. Minerals allow for this freedom a lot better than with liquids.
Here is my ‘blending’ container…

I tap out the color(s) I want to use, mix if needed and then use this thick kabuki brush to apply. It is very true that you do not need a lot of product to cover your face. I swirl my brush VERY lightly with foundation and then swirl VERY softly on my face. Herein lies the key: VERY LIGHTLY and VERY SOFTLY. If you grind the product into your brush, you’ll waste a lot. If you grind the minerals onto your skin, you will not get the results you are looking for.
Here, I have swatched my current shade onto the back of my hand…
 First, no minerals.
And now, with a dusting of my foundation.
Here’s what you can tell, the pores and fine lines, even on my hand have been blurred with SMM foundation.

Because my skin is dry, yet will get shiny within an hour, SMM foundation will nix that all day. I always were a day time moisturizer before applying my mineral foundation. For even better results, I use a skin primer and baby, is that smooth to apply my foundation over! And, gosh, you have an SPF of 15+ without any gloo on!

Remember I told you that I started out with a big-name brand first? That foundation gave me a shine that was not even natural. I didn’t like the way it looked. Yet, with SMM, I have a soft, matte look. And, along with using my SMM Finishing Veil, I stay shine free with only a touch up of Finishing Veil midday.

You can check here on Southern Magnolia Minerals website to find your color and pick the size of packaging that works for you. Have any questions about your color, just email Barb. However, the site gives excellent examples for you to follow. A starter jar for $6.95 is right were I would suggest you start.

Whether You’ve Partied Or Not, You Can Still Look Well-Rested

The Southern Magnolia Minerals giveaway is going on. Check it out because there is a $20 gift certificate that someone is going to win next Saturday. 🙂

Today I am reviewing ‘Well Rested Eyeshadow Concealer.’

Many people say they have dark circles under their eyes when, in fact, they just have thinner skin.
This is dark circles under the eyes…

Raul Julia was known for his dark circles and bags under his eyes.

However, if you do, there is a fix for you. And, I use this concealer to lighten up my eye area.

Using the makeup brush you see in the first two photos, I pat on a very small amount of this mineral powder under my eyes.  I don’t swipe it, I pat it very gently. I also put this on before I put on other eye makeup. I do this because if there is any fall-out, I can use a fan brush and sweep it away rather than mixing the ‘Well Rested’ on top of that.

This 5 gram container has lasted me for eternity. Since I don’t need much and you should always use the least amount you need, my jar has lasted a long time.

‘Well Rested Concealer’ doesn’t change the color of my skin, it enhances it. Here I patted some on my hand…

I did pat on a bit too much because, I did want you to see SOMETHING! As you can tell, it blurs the skin lines and discolorations. It doesn’t really have a shimmer to it but seems to have a teeny hit of sheen to it to reflect light. But, there is also a ‘Well Rested’ that is in a matte color that you may prefer.

‘Well Rested’ comes in several sizes…
-A sample bag, that will last approximately 3 uses is $3. This is perfect to get along with the matte color to see which you like best.
-A Starter jar is 1 gram in a non-sifter jar that will last you about 1 month. It’s $6.95.
-The Full Size jar has 2.8 grams. The jar has a sifter and it will last about 6 months. It costs $10.95.
-And the refill bag is $13.95, lasting well over a year.

These usage lengths are approximate as I have had my Full Size jar for over a year. However, do note, I don’t have the dark circles, I’m just lightening up my eye area.

And speaking of which, you can use ‘Well Rested’ as a shadow base color, lighten up spots of discoloration (I’d recommend the matte for that), lightening up the inner corners of the eye and, for accenting the bow on the upper lip (a trick for a thin upper lip to look fuller).

This may just be the product you are looking for. It is, without a doubt, one that I highly recommend.

The Latest Giveway~Southern Magnolia Minerals

One of my favorite companies to do business with is Southern Magnolia Minerals. I have been a customer for over 8 years.

Created and owned by Barb Huffman, she started her business in 2001, which had been a dream of hers since she was a child. She mixes, creates, sorts, fills, packages and ships everything herself, with the help of her husband and daughter. Barb is very passionate about her business and I have yet to find such a caring business owner as her. Barb doesn’t know me personally, but she has taken the time to learn my skin tone and help me pick a foundation color that suits me to a T.

The other favorite item I LOVE from SMM is the ‘Shine Reduction Powder‘ and the ‘Translucent Finishing Veil‘. Barb is a Southern gal and she knows what it takes to keep a nose powdered. Even though I have dry skin, I can still get shiny from the Florida heat. I have my ‘Finishing Veil‘ to the rescue. Literally, I carry a dispensing brush of ‘Finishing Veil’ in my makeup bag and in the console of my car.

Right on the jar, you can read the ingredients. And just like the mineral foundation, it has an SPF 10+. If SPF is not important to you in your skin makeup, you need to rethink that!

Here’s a photo of my latest order…

Besides the ‘Shine Reduction Powder‘ and the ‘Translucent Finishing Veil‘, I purchased a sample of ‘Petal Pink HD Illuminizer‘. It’s an extremely soft, very delicate pink finishing powder that will help perk up a youthful glow on my face. This was a new item for me to try and I love how subtle the illuminizer is. It is not a girly-sleep-over glitter. It’s the ‘yea, I know how to take care of my skin’ glow. (More on the ‘Silk Kiss Glow’ this week.)

Throughout the next week, I’m going to highlight (hee hee…secret pun!) the different products from Southern Minerals Makeup. I want to share with you why I have been a loyal customer to this makeup for 8 years. I want to tell you what products are working for me.

I went looking for a more affordable product than the ‘brand name’ mineral makeup that I had been using.  I found SMM online and SMM is, hands down, a better product. Not because it has a less expensive price tag than the former, but because it left me with a truly air-brushed effect.

When I placed my most recent order, I asked Barb if she would mind if I reviewed my experience with SMM and the products that I use. Not only did Barb say OK, she wants to treat YOU to the wonderful beauty of SMM.

First, I am going to have a giveaway for a $20 Gift Certificate for Southern Magnolia Minerals. All you need to do is leave a post here with your follower name, your email address and why you want to try Southern Magnolia Minerals.  The drawing will be held on Saturday, 6/11/11 at 8 PM, EST.

Only one entry, please. Sorry about this, but North American followers only.  I will contact the winner by email after the drawing for information to pass onto Barb. Winner needs to respond back in 48 hours.

Next, if you can’t wait to win, and you want to own SMM now, you can get a 25% discount on the SMM site by signing up for the newsletter. If you follow SMM on Facebook, you will receive special offers as well.

I’m excited to share Southern Magnolia Minerals with you. My face rarely leaves home without it!
