Maple Holistics: Silk 18 Conditioner

When I was approached to do a review on one of Maple Holistics products, I knew exactly what I was going to hone in on. Silk 18 Conditioner was the perfect choice!

This past Summer, I went from blonde to silver. That process didn’t include a friendly process to my locks. They are parched. Seriously parched. The sulfate-free shampoo I was using did not make my hair soft at all. I was beginning to think that bleaching my hair this light wasn’t for me.

Some hair conditioning products need to be used over time to see results. Especially if you have an extreme hair issue like super oily, super dry or super damaged. So, just imagine the pleasant surprise I got when Silk 18 Conditioner made my hair beyond soft…it was truly silky! And, on the first use.

When you take a look at the ingredients in Silk 18, you instantly see that almost all the healthy oils for hair and skin are in this. And, there are 18 (hence, the name) different silk amino acids that leave your hair moisturized and able to retain that moisture.

The light vanilla fragrance was extremely pleasant. The texture of the conditioner was really thick. Thick like a conditioning mask. However, it was still easy to squeeze out of the bottle. Honestly, the moment I started massaging Silk 18 Conditioner into my hair, I knew it was a winner. After 3 minutes, I rinsed and that silky feeling was still there. I let my hair air dry, without any other products. Since I have fine hair, I wanted to see if the conditioner weighed down my strands. Not only did it stay soft but after a half dozen uses over time, my hair didn’t experience a build up. My fine curls were airy, soft and healthy.

As the weather becomes more and more dry with the seasonal change, there’s no way I can get away with not being diligent keeping my hair, as well as the rest of me, hydrated. Using Maple Holistics Silk 18 Conditioner has my hair covered.

You can find Maple Holistics on their website. To go directly to Silk 18 Conditioner, click here. You’ll see that this conditioner is not expensive; $10!!! Look around Maple Holistics site and you’ll find lots and lots to like about this brand.

Hemptopia Lip Balm: Extraordinary Lip Care with Hemp

Whether it is Summer or Winter, I have made it a part of my skincare ritual to take care of my kisser. I have had dry lips as long as I can recall. So, lip care is important to me in order to keep my lips soft and smooth.

I received Hemptopia’s All Natural Beeswax and Hemp Lip Balm in a monthly subscription box that I paid for myself. It was the first thing I tried as I am always on the lookout for the best lip balm. Even though the packaging is quite simple, the balm is a hard worker. Yet, it is a hard worker that does it naturally. I know you’ll recognize every one of the ingredients.

What makes Hemptopia’s All Natural Beeswax and Hemp Lip Balm is the obvious because of its name: Hemp. Now, before you start to think ‘Hey, hey! I can get high by just licking my lips!’, know that this is so far from the truth. The hemp used in the lip balm does not have THC and, you will not fail a drug test by using it. What you will get is a healthy dose of omega fats. Your body achieves healthy benefits from these omegas as they help soften your skin as well as acting as an anti-inflammatory. This helps keep the turnover of skin cells in an awesome, healthy way.

The hemp seeds used in this product come from industrial hemp farms in the US and Canada. The Departments of Agriculture closely regulate and test all produce from these farmers. All commerical hemp is treated this way.

Right out of the box, as I mentioned, I tried Hemptopia’s Lip Balm and I am beyond pleased with the results. This balm is not sticky or hard. It glides across my lips and they stay moisturized for hours. It has no fragrance or taste. Definitely, I have found my lip balm for all seasons.

Hemptopia sells lots of other products too from bags to clothes to foods. You can get your own hemp lip balm at http://www.hemptopia.com/hemp-body-care/

Hey! I just checked and Hemptopia has this balm on sale for $2.50.

Freeman’s Beauty: Honeydew & Chamomile Sleeping Mask

The Facial Mask Monday product is a different type of mask. This is one that is a cream, you put it on before bedtime and sleep with it on. I think I picked up this Freeman’s Honeydew & Chamomile Sleeping Mask at Walmart. They usually run about $1.37 or so.DSCF0022

I had only read other reviews about these types of masks so, when I found this one, I thought I’d give it a go. When a product says that it ‘deeply hydrates’, I feel they are talking to me…

DSCF0023

I was worried about getting my pillow and sheets messy. But, I figured it out by not putting it on as thick as an apply and wipe off 15 minutes later mask. That left about 4 applications from this one packet.

If you love cantaloupes, you’ll love the fragrance of this mask. I wish I had some in the refrigerator right now! It smelled just like the melon!  That, along with the chamomile set the stage for a very relaxing experience. There are lots and lots of ingredients in this mask. Wow! A lot of them are from plant and fruit oil that are recognizable…

DSCF0024 - Copy

How well did this one work? It worked so well I wish my skin would feel like this all the time. But, that was the next morning. I had a hard time keeping myself from rubbing in the product. And, it did sting my cheeks and nose for about 7 minutes when I first put it on. Maybe the facial wipe I used caused it? I don’t know. I don’t have sensitive skin so, I can’t recommend it to those that have any sensitivity issues.

The mask is a very heavy cream. When I applied it, it became opaque, however…

The entire time I prepped for this post, all I could think about was Mrs. Kravitz. How many of you are old enough to know her and her put-upon husband, Abner?

I’m Checking In On My New Year’s Resolutions

I know that is a weird title to start off a blog post for the beginning of July. However, hear me out.

Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions for 2015? I kind of cheat and start mine November 1. Why in the world would I do that? One, it’s my wedding anniversary and two, it is the first day of the pagan year. Mostly I do it because I want a head start on everyone else.

When Summer comes in June, I’m ready to reflect and see how well I have done on my commitments so far.

First, I don’t usually share most of my goals with people outside of my family. Even that can be hard because I have had so many dreams dashed by sharing them and, having someone take them away. I like to hold them close because my goals are very personal. But, I feel that by sharing these, I am being proud of my accomplishments regardless of what anyone else says. I am only comparing myself to myself.

year goals 18

My first goal is a huge one and that is to run 10 5K races this year. The most I have ever run, in one year’s time, is 2 or 3. I started running a little over 5 years ago. I took some time off in 2013 after my father passed away because I just didn’t feel like doing it and, I moved from Florida to Colorado. I got ill last year and that is what actually spurred me to get back to working out again. Plus, I was beginning to miss it.

I started January off with my first 5K of the year and, first one in Colorado. Last month, I finished my 4th one and, have a race every month until the end of the year. Placing my finisher’s medals on the wall, next to my treadmill (which I only use if the weather is bad) gives me motivation…medals

I will be purchasing this medal hook rack to put them all. It sums it all up…

Tracking my fitness progress is essential for my success. I keep a monthly tracking form of my workouts and runs. It is very gratifying for me to see each line filled in…

If I am to workout almost every day, I need to eat and, I need to eat foods that give me healthy fuel. My goal is to start the day off with something healthy. My breakfast is a protein shake with creatine (helps my muscles recover faster). I add in frozen fruit or, my current obsession: peanut butter and a banana…

Learning is something I have craved my entire life. I have discovered Udemy, which has a huge selection of online courses. I am enrolled in a lot of them because I won a giveaway where I won all the classes I had listed in my wishlist. My goal is to actually TAKE the classes. I have been sporadic in doing so…

year goals 25

As well as learning, I made a goal of reading a book a month. I haven’t done so well with this because, I am either reading stuff on the Internet or, reading fitness, running or health magazines. I have a LOT of books waiting to be read…

This is the first electric toothbrush I have ever owned so I don’t know if all of them have a timer but, mine does. It has 4 timed rounds. I had been cheating on the time and cutting it short. My goal is to brush for the entire brushing session. I’m doing great on that goal…

year goals 2

And, I have been wanting to up my game on my beauty blog, right here! I have made very, very slow progress. Mostly because even though I know what I want, I don’t know how to do it. I haven’t given up. I love blogging and, most importantly, I enjoy the beauty blogging community…

year goals 30

Each year I give up one beauty product that is not cruelty-free and once I make that choice, I stay with it. I’ve not broken that goal in the past 4 years that I have made that commitment.

These are the most important commitments I have made for the year. Checking in on them in the middle of the year helps me not only recommit but also, to remember why I choose to do these things.

Do you keep your New Year’s Resolutions?

Mask Monday: Studio 35 Beauty Warming Mask

This Mask Monday edition hosts a warming mask from Studio 35 Beauty, Walgreen’s own beauty line…

DSCF0082

I picked this one up when Walgreen’s had them on sale for about $2.50. They usually run around $3.50.

Walgreen’s has a 100% satisfaction guarantee on their home brand products. That’s a great reason for me to recommend these to you. If you don’t dig it, take it back. It was interesting to see that after all the Baroness paper masks I have been reviewing that even this one is from Korea, as well…

DSCF0085

The Studio 35 Beauty mask is a liquid mask, however. It’s a semi-thick cream that has an off-orange color to it…

DSCF0087

When I squeezed out the entire package to apply to my face, most of the cream was the opaque cream rather than the clear liquid. I made sure to emulsify the rest of the cream in the envelope in case it all needed to blend together to create the warming effect.

And, mentioned the warming effect, it is slight yet, still noticeable. But, only upon application. I didn’t really feel the warmth after 3 minutes of applying it.

The fragrance is very light. I was expecting it to have more of a citrus odor to it but it wasn’t even leaning towards an orange smell. I found it to be pleasant and didn’t interfere one bit with the great experience of using the warming mask.

Although the instructions state to leave the mask on until it dries, I found it didn’t completely dry on me. It did get slightly tacky but, it didn’t become dry or tight…

DSCF0084

The exfoliating part is very subtle. I can’t say I noticed it at all. I just trust that the mask was breaking down the dirt and dead skin layer and was washed away when I was finished. It wasn’t on purpose but, some of the mask got on my lips. It actually felt nice and so I left it on. There wasn’t any itchy, burning or otherwise unpleasant sensation so I went with it.

The list of ingredients are as follows…

DSCF0083

Along with a very long list of herbal and natural extracts are some chemical components I wasn’t familiar with. I picked one to research as I love to learn about these things.

The fifth listed ingredient is Sodium Silcoaluminate. Just on a guess, I figured it was some sort of salt, silicon and aluminum mixture. What I discovered is that it is a rather common ingredient used in eye shadows, mascaras and foundations. It has a very slight SPF but nothing worth touting about. It does have some anti-aging benefits and can be found in those types of products as well. You can also find Sodium Silcoaluminate in laundry detergent and Biscuits. Why, may you ask, would this ingredient be in those items? It is also an anti-caking agent, and is often used as a food additive. It is abrasive and helps increase the volume in items. Quite commonly known as a bulking ingredient.

As I concluded by the name, it is made up of sodium, aluminum and silicate. There is no known toxicity to the environment or to humans. This ingredient isn’t a known allergen and isn’t known to interfere with the human immune system.

After researching Sodium Silcoaluminate, better than 20 minutes had passed. (I had the mask on while I did the research.) I checked and found the mask, as I mentioned, to be tacky but not drying. I must mention that there is more than enough product for my face and my neck so, I got the idea to use it on the back of my hands as well. I washed it all off with a warm wash cloth. The mask washed off very easily. After I pat-dried my skin, it felt squeaky clean. Not extra soft but I wasn’t expecting that. My skin was very clean-feeling. And, I’m quite happy with that. It was prepped and ready for my regular skin routine.

Walgreen’s warming mask is one that I feel I could recommend to all skin types. Unless you see something in particular that you know you are allergic to from the ingredient list, I think it would be OK for those with sensitive skin.

Have you tried any of Walgreen’s Studio 35 Beauty items?

Freeman Beauty: Bare Foot Peppermint and Plum Foot Lotion

I took up running about four years ago when I over-strained my shoulder and had to lay off my regular workouts of weights and kickboxing. Me, a runner. I never would have guested! But, one thing that comes with running 3 to 4 times a week is calluses on the feet. Time to bring out the big guns…

I hadn’t really paid much attention that Freeman Beauty had foot lotions until I found a bunch of these envelope packages accidentally shelved with the Freeman face masks at a Walmart.

Since I love Freeman Beauty’s wide array of facial masks, it was a no-brainer for me to pick up a few of their Bare Foot lotions. And, I was intrigued by a peppermint & plum combination…

Also, it has tea tree oil in it that promises to soothe my tired feet…

empties V-Day swatches videos grays 002

And, of course, it’s loaded with lots of other good for the skin ingredients too…

empties V-Day swatches videos grays 004My regimen is to slather on this lotion before I tuck my footsies to bed. Did my feet feel soothed? Well, actually, they did with the cooling effect of the peppermint and tea tree oil. Did my calluses go away? No, however, the soles of my feet are softer and not dry or rough. That’s OK with me. Another thing that is OK with me is that Freeman Beauty doesn’t test on animals and, it’s made right here in the US…

empties V-Day swatches videos grays 005

I did a bit of detective work and found that Freeman Beauty Foot Lotions are merchandised at Walmart in the pharmacy area where they sell shoe inserts and other foot products. When I finish up the several packages I got of these foot lotions and, am ready to purchase a larger tube, I know where to look. Also, I am signed up with the Freeman Beauty website and get sales newsletters often for even better deals.

As far as the plum and peppermint fragrance, it wasn’t overly strong yet created a nice olfactory experience to add to my bedtime routine. I like using it as a last bit of pampering before turning in.

As a side note: My goal this year is to run 10 5K races. I have one down and my second one coming up March 22. These foot lotions are a nice way for me to give back to the hard work I’m putting my feet through.

Lumene: Dry Skin Comfort Radiance Cocktail

Lumene is a skincare brand that I don’t read much about. However, there needs to be more talk about this awesome company, in my opinion! I have used a couple of their products and have loved them. Today’s post is on their Vitamin C+ Dry Skin Comfort Radiance Cocktail…

lumene cocktail

First, I want to say that you can find Lumene at Walgreens and, that’s where I make my purchases. I paid about $15 for this product. You can also find it online and CVS.

I was drawn to this serum because I am working hard on keeping my skin moist. Once Fall became cold, the skin directly under my eyes and the tops of my cheeks become so dry that the skin feels very taunt. After reading the package, I thought I’d give it a go and see how it works for me.

I’m happy to say that Dry Skin Comfort Radiance Cocktail is a godsend for my dry skin. After washing my face at night, I used this serum next. While, my skin didn’t totally drink it in immediately, it kept my skin soft and I didn’t feel any uncomfortable, tight skin afterwards. I actually liked that the Cocktail was slow to absorb yet, it didn’t leave my skin feeling slick or greasy. Just refreshingly soft.

Lumene uses plants that grow in the arctic region due to their hardiness. This Radiance Cocktail has cranberry and cloudberry seed oil in it that is known for soothing extremely dry skin. The added Vitamin C+ helps turn over the skin cell replication to keep your complexion bright. You can use this on your driest spots but for me, I used it all over my face and neck.

There is only a slight fragrance to this serum that seems crisp like a citrus note. But, it doesn’t linger for but a couple of seconds once you have it on your skin. This is a thick serum that you do need to shake up in the bottle to mix before you dispense. And, it only took about three drops for me to cover my face and neck.

So, do I like Lumene’s Vitamin C+ Dry Skin Comfort Radiance Cocktail?…

DSCF0048

Here’s my latest bottle and it’s all gone. I recommend this product to those that have normal to dry skin and those that know that their face can tolerate Vitamin C serums.

Have you tried any Lumene products?

Toss or Trash: November 2014 Part II

I’m clearing out and making room and, I love it! I’m finishing up lots and lots of products. These nail polish remover pads from L.A. Colors were awesome!…

DSCF0043 DSCF0044

Even though it states that they are strawberry scented, these still smell like nail polish remover. But, if they are not the hardest working polish remover pads, I don’t know what is! I actually had to use about two to three per removal only because they are rather small but, this formula didn’t dry my cuticles out one bit. I’ll pick up more when I can find them.

With no doubt, my hair has gone through a huge change since leaving Florida and moving to Colorado. I’ve been trying lots of different moisturizing products in my quest for soft tresses….

DSCF0002 DSCF0003 DSCF0004

I was lured into thinking Tresemme’s Liquid Gold Shine Therapy would make my hair shimmery-golden. Not really. And, it didn’t give me any moisture either. The only thing it did do was keep my hair from becoming overly frizzy. However, Bath and Body Works White Citrus Shower Gel is still one of my favorite BBW fragrance. And, their washes never dry out my skin. That one I’ll replace.

I was giving this Avon lipstick sample with my last order of Moisture Effect Eye Makeup Remover (one of my very favorite eye makeup removers and I highly recommend). Take a look at what the sample looks like after just ONE try…

DSCF0018 DSCF0020 DSCF0019

The product is so soft that it just mushed up! Trust me, I’m not a Messy Marvin with my makeup but this was ridiculous.  I think the name is ‘Pink Flush’ but I don’t know which line it is from. As much as I love the color, this lippie not only had a problem staying in the tube, it roamed around my lips as well! Too messy so, I threw it away.

Earlier this summer, I got this free sample of Urban Decay’s Vitamin Infusion Complexion Prep Spray. Sadly, I just didn’t find that this spray added anything to my skin. My pores didn’t seem to be minimized nor did my makeup become less shiny throughout the day…

DSCF0049

My makeup didn’t seem to, noticeably, last longer, either. If you have used this, I’d love to know what your experience has been.

I’m really on a roll using up products. I’m looking for bottles and tubes that are almost used up and grabbing them to finish eyeing a spot for them in the Toss or Trash feature. In my quest to find such items, I discovered a bottle of Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength LIne-Reducing Concentrate I had. I have just finished up my last bottle and knew I trip to Kiehl’s was in order. However, finding this backup bottle saved me almost $60 that I didn’t need to spend! Plus, I found a couple of bottle of Suave body lotion that I caught on sale earlier this year so I didn’t need to replace any of those.

What was the last beauty product you used up?
