Facial Wipe Wednesday: elf’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths

When I began doing the ‘Facial Wipe Wednesday’ posts, it was because I had a beauty blogger friend say she felt like she was cheating when she used facial wipes. I had never thought of it that way because I used them exclusively when I traveled for the convenience. Over the past couple of years, I have reviewed dozens of makeup/facial wipes and have found some that I love and some that I was happy to review but wouldn’t use on a continual basis.

There have been more and more brands jumping on the facial wipe band wagon over the past years. I do not lack for products to do this segment. In fact, I can get quite overwhelmed. However, it has been a marvelous journey to share my reviews on this niche beauty product. I plan on continuing to share too, no doubt! I have actually come to love using them almost on a daily basis. I do use them daily when I am testing for a review. I use the same product for at least 7 days straight. It usually ends up being more like 12 days, though.

For the past 12 days, I have been using elf’s makeup wipes…

I picked these up at Target for $3. Notice that there are only 20 cloths in this product. Most of the brands that I review have 30. I consider that a month’s worth. So, even though elf’s price is a bit cheaper than most other brands, which run around $5 to $6, those usually have more cloths too.

elf’s packaging has a double closure, which does help keep the cloths from drying out. Those packages that have just the plastic adhesive strip can lose their stickiness, over time, and dry out. With elf’s snap enclosure, you have double assurance this doesn’t happen…

Another positive for elf, they promote the ‘good’ symbols…

I found the cloths to be very moist and they did a good job of removing all different types of mascara, that I could visibly see…

Don’t let all the chemical names in their ingredient list scare you off. If you Google them, you’ll find that they are found in many different facial products and nothing that is out of the ordinary. However, it is good to know what they are if you have sensitive skin…

I didn’t experience any sensitivities. I found the fragrance to be a bit on the strong side but it wasn’t unpleasant to me. The size of the wipes are what I normally find and is large enough to completely wipe my face and eye area…

The texture is thinner than most, however. As you can see in the photo above, you can see through the cloth. There isn’t any texture to it as it was very smooth to rub over my skin…

For the first 3 or so days, I will follow up with a toner (I use Kiehl’s ‘Ultra Facial Toner). I do this to see how much residual from my makeup comes off. Sadly, elf’s Cleansing Cloths didn’t so such a whoopie job of removing all the makeup from my skin. I don’t think have too high of expectations to have a clean face after using a ‘cleansing’ cloth. The cotton pad I used with the toner ended up having black on it. It is my assumption when this happens that the cloth is not holding onto the mascara, in this case, and instead, is smearing it around my face. At least one day during the test period, I don’t wear makeup but still use the cloth as part of my nightly skincare routine. I follow-up with the toner to see what happens. With no makeup on, the toner pad was not blackened. I can assure you, that if my toner is removing makeup, I continue to use toner for the rest of the test period!

In a pinch, I would use these wipes but only if I have my toner to follow up with. And, with so many other brands on the market to vie for my attention, I can’t see settling for elf’s Makeup Remover Cleansing Cloths.

Have you tried these wipes and what have you experienced?

  • Aleya Bamdad

These sound great but I wish they did sell them in packs of 30 or more.

    • Kimberly Purcell

I think it is one of those marketing things where they hope that most of their consumers don’t notice it.

  • I bought these wipes years ago, and I didn’t like them. They left a greasy/tacky film I didn’t like.

    • Kimberly Purcell

I don’t like that feeling either and know what you mean.

  • I have gotten these before! I don’t have sensitive skin so these worked fine for me and I love the price!

    • Kimberly Purcell

But I didn’t really care that they didn’t mop up all the makeup.

  • Norah Salazar

You can’t go wrong for $3!

    • Kimberly Purcell

Well, as I mentioned, they didn’t do the job.

      • Norah Salazar

I don’t think that for $3 it is going to be a great product?

        • Kimberly Purcell

I have been very pleased with almost all of the elf products I’ve tried. This one is the first out and out dislike I have ever had from them. I’m happy, though, it was only a $3 investment. Usually, if I don’t use up the entire package of wipes that I have reviewed, I retire them to becoming hand wipes for when I do swatches on my hand or arms. Since these are almost gone, I’m just going to finish them up. So, I guess I can’t say I hated them so bad that I had to throw them away. LOL I just have to follow up with the toner.

  • I agree these may work well in a pinch but for sure not daily. I wish they sold them in a high count per pack, but I guess for the price you cant beat it.

    • Kimberly Purcell

Even if they sold them in a higher count, I’m not in.

  • I love these. They are convenient to take with me if I am travelling and they remove all my makeup. Love them!

    • Kimberly Purcell

I’m glad you have better success with them than I did.

  • I haven’t tried these, and now after your review, I probably won’t… ELF has so many amazing products, but this one just doesn’t cut it!

    • Kimberly Purcell

You know, I was truly surprised that these didn’t make the grade. (Get it, professor!??) I worked extra hard with them because I couldn’t believe they weren’t performing as well as I had expected.

  • erikatheicyone

Thanks to this review, I am going to pass on the ELF wipes. I’ll stick to my beloved Neutrogena! 🙂

    • Kimberly Purcell

You are making a wise decision!

  • I’ve never tried them but I think I’ll skim ’em. The Neutrogena wipes have me hooked!

    • Kimberly Purcell

Yea, these wouldn’t be worth the effort.

  • I haven’t tried these, but the next ones on my list are the ones from Tarte!!

    • Kimberly Purcell

I am looking at those too. But, they are more expensive than any of the other wipes I have reviewed. I have been told by a Sephora insider that Ole Henriken wipes are the best too.

  • as long as there’s no citric acid in them I’m game to try them! 🙂

    • Kimberly Purcell

Maybe that’s what my skin needs in order for it to pick up all the dirt it left behind. Hmm…

  • Yuck. Great review, but it’s good to know they’re wipes to skip. I can’t use most wipes anyways.

    • Kimberly Purcell

Phyrra, I can see why you would stir clear of wipes with your sensitive skin. Many of them may say they are OK for sensitive skin but I would say that would be OK for ‘mildly’ sensitive skin.

  • Justina

I haven’t tried these yet. I just started using MAC’s and they are amazing!

    • Kimberly Purcell

      Oh, dear! More temptations!

  • cindyprimebeauty

    Think I’ll skip these.

    • Kimberly Purcell

      You’re not missing a thing.

  • I have gotten these as freebies a few times in orders and always gave them away. I’m glad I did – oh my gosh totally a skip for me since my skin is so super sensitive.

    • Kimberly Purcell

It is rather disappointing since I love so many other elf products.

  • I hate when a lot of makeup comes off after following up with toner :/ I’ll pass!

    • Kimberly Purcell

It is the make or break for me. I still stand by my beloved Forever 21 love & beauty lavender wipes. Those are my #1 choice.

  • I use these mostly for swatting. Ive always liked them.

    • Kimberly Purcell

They would be great for just sweating. Or, like I mentioned when I don’t have makeup on and am just washing off my face. Yes!

  • Cosmetic Sanctuary

I wasn’t too impressed with their wipes :/ You are right, too many out there that are just better

    • Kimberly Purcell

We’re on the same page, love!

  • kSquaredGlamour

I have never tried this brands wipes. I currently use tarts wipe

  • BTBAshley

I did not like these either. There is much better at the drugstore.

    • Kimberly Purcell

There are tons to choose from!

  • Angela Sherman

im nervous to try wipes because my skin is so sensitive.
