Facial Wipe Wednesday: Olay’s Fresh Effects

So….it’s already Thursday but…..here’s a facial wipe review anyway.

The Olay brand has never appealed to me. Maybe it’s because it jumped into popularity when I was in my 20’s and anti-aging products didn’t speak to me at that time. Maybe part of it is that I don’t associate myself with the ‘Oil of Olay’ crowd. I don’t think I’m the only one because Olay has rebranded themselves by dropping the ‘Oil of’ monogram. Β I just can’t, completely, put my finger on why I don’t gravitate to this brand so, I was truly thinking outside my comfort zone to try Olay’s facial wipes.

First, I will say that I do find the packaging appealing…

DSCF0135And, when I picked this up at Walmart, I was intrigued by the ‘essence of honeysuckle and white tea’…

And, they have priced their package of 25 wipes for about $5, which is in line with other facial wipes I would get at a mass merchandiser…

Here’s what is in them…

And, the copy on the package is cute…

What I think about them is this: they are just not for me. But, what I did like is that they did smell good. They have the fresh and clean smell that I like and it wasn’t over-powering at all. The only negative I have is that I don’t feel that there was enough cleansing power behind it. And, that is a huge road block for me: they didn’t live up to the ‘Everything Off!’ tag line.

I test out the wipes for at least 7 days in a row. I wear a variety of types of makeup so I can get a fairly well-rounded feel for how well the wipes do remove everything. I like to wait about 5 to 10 minutes after using the facial wipe to see if my skin feels clean and, if I feel my skin is too dry, just right or if I feel any type of residue left behind. Then, I use Kiehl’s facial toner. That’s been my measuring stick to see just how clean my skin is after using the facial wipe.

Here’s where I feel that Olay Fresh Effects let me down. My cotton pads with the toner were dirty after using them. Night after night, it was the same thing. Naturally, after a couple of nights of this, I think that I’m not doing a good enough job of wiping my face so I will try harder. But, it didn’t matter because I was still getting a lot of makeup coming off after using the toner. It wasn’t even, mostly, my foundation, which would be close to my flesh color. The cotton pads were black so, I think it was mascara and it was getting smeared all over my face.

After approximately 5 days, I started using the wipe just on my face, avoiding my eye makeup entirely. I used my Kiehl’s toner and was still getting the same result but, it was much lighter. Then, I would finish up with removing my eye makeup.

Before I continue, here’s an idea of the size of the facial wipe; it’s standard size…

And, the wipe isn’t smooth. It has a texture to it which, is still very gentle to the skin…

I’m going to conclude that the facial wipe doesn’t HOLD all the dirt but, spreads it around my skin. I can’t tell you, honestly, if it is just because I wasn’t getting all the makeup off with the wipe alone but, my skin didn’t feel freshly cleaned. I didn’t feel my skin becoming dry and tight immediately after using the wipe but, it did take using the toner before I felt comfortable that my skin was completely clean.

This is one of those times when I will flat out admit that preconceived notions could influence my thoughts on Olay’s Fresh Effects facial wipes. Their subline is ‘Everything Off!’ but, I didn’t feel that to be true.

Have you tried Olay’s facial wipes? How about any of the products from the Fresh Effects line? I’d love to find out if anyone else has a different turn out.

Bummer about this one, I was just eyeing them at my local drugstore the other day. I wouldn’t want a wipe to just spread the makeup around my face rather than removing it. Oh well, at least they smell nice =/

    • And, of course, your mileage may vary. πŸ˜€

  • Amber

Too bad they didn’t work. I’ve kind of given up on wipes. I couldn’t find one I liked, and I’m so hooked on my Clinique take the day off balm!

    • I started this series when a fellow beauty blogger and friend said that she felt like she was ‘cheating’ using facial wipes. I don’t feel it is cheating IF, you get a good one!

  • Gah. I’m sad they didn’t work =(

    • Brooke, they might for you. I just didn’t find them doing it for me.

  • erikatheicyone

I avoid Olay face care products like the plague. Every one I have ever tried has been an utter disaster for me. I like their body wash and in shower body lotion stuff, tho. πŸ™‚

    • I think this is the first ever Olay product I have purchased. I have never been interested in ‘Old of Olay’, as we called it.

  • Emily Hudspeth

Thanks for this review! I have been tempted to pick them up because they always jump out at me in the store. I am a sucker for product merchandising, good packaging and catchy copy:) Sometimes I use a wipe just for my first step in cleaning. I havent found a great one that I dont feel like I need to follow up with an additional cleaning. But simply smelling great and leaving that much product behind wont cut it for me either!

    • I have reviewed some in the past that I LOVE like, Forever 21’s love and beauty lavender ones. They do the job!!!

  • hmmm I love facial wipes, but these don’t seem to be any good πŸ™ I bought one of the new exfoliating scrubs… here’s hoping it works!

    • I want to know how it turns out for you!!!

  • Looks like it works well for you. I can’t use wipes.

    • She actually said they didn’t hold up to their claims!

      • Phyrra Nyx

I totally misread the line about it taking off dirt!

        • Nope. This would NOT be wipes I’d recommend.

  • Bummer… so useless if they dont actually hold on to the dirt and take it off your face!

    • Sort of like that commercial where the sponge was smearing the germs around the counter, right?

  • Cosmetic Sanctuary

I’ve tried them and they were ok, but never got the job done

    • Thanks for letting me know that. Sometimes I think I’m just not doing something right. However, I have used other wipes that were the BOMB!

  • BeautyJudy

What an amazing thorough review!!! I will steer clear of these

  • Betzy Carmona

Very good review , but I’m in love with my 99 cent wipes or neutrogena ones

    • I’ll have to put those on my list to try out!

  • MyNewestAddiction

Thank you for the great review. I always try to pick up something new here and there. Looks like I will skip on these.

    • Yep. I’ll stay with recommending the Forver 21 love and beauty’s lavender facial wipes (still my favorite after doing this series for over a year now) and the Simple brand.

  • Nidia Doherty

I didn’t even realize that they’d dropped the “oil of’ in their name! Whenever people tell me I have young skin, I always tell them it’s the Oil of Olay – it can help you look younger, too! Even though I haven’t used it in ages. The slogan just stuck with me! These wipes won’t, though!

    • Of course, Nidia, your skin, which is very lovely, may work awesomely with Olay. I chalk up my looking young to not only good genes (thanks Mom!), but to Avon’s Anew which I used for over 15 years.

  • FabZilla_Kath

When I was younger, I used to associate Oil of Olay with older women. Anyhoo, I don’t think I have tried these wipes and now that I’ve read your review, I won’t even bother look at ’em *snobs*

    • I always thought of Olay as for old women too. But, eventually, well, I became one of those old women. LOL!

  • Farryn

What a shame.. Was worth a try though!

    • You are right. You never know until you try!! I’m here to help. πŸ™‚

  • myCosmeticBag

Yeah my skin felt a little filmy after using these

    • Nice to know I’m not the only one. Validation helps. Thanks!

  • kSquaredGlamour

I will pass on these! thanks for the review πŸ™‚
