Replace or Reject: The March Edition, Part 1

The Toss or Trash segment has been a tradition at the Vanity for over 3-1/2 years. I am changing the name to Replace or Reject to more clearly reflect the final outcome of my empties or, in some instances, a flat out rejection of a product. I’m not holding back either!

For March, I did very well with finishing up products. For this review, I picked these three to start off…

DSCF0002

First, on the left, is a lip balm from Bath and Body Works…DSCF0002 DSCF0003

Let me say that this balm never smelled like honey or apples and it turned bad, anyway, since I never reached for it, in the first place. It’s a hard balm too. After discovering Soft Lips balms, reviewed here, I decided I don’t have to put up with hard lip balms anymore. And, since I turned my family members onto Soft Lips, as well, I can’t pass this Bath and Body Works stick off onto them.

This did have a slight tint to it. I had to make sure I didn’t color outside of the lines with stick!

DSCF0004

Next, I tried the Simple Ultra-Light Gel Moisturizer. I used up almost all of this product in hopes that it would work for me. There was about 2/5 left when I decided that it wasn’t going to happen and deemed it a reject.

Now, the product is very good but, just not for my skin type which is normal to dry. I need more moisturizing properties than this Simple product provides. I would recommend it for those that have oily skin. I did find the gel texture to be too sticky for my preference.

Last is the Instant Youth Potion. I reviewed this as part of the ZMask set here. Since I have dedicated this year to using up or, purging products, I started using the Instant Youth Potion every day. I did use it for my morning routine as it has some skin-tightening properties. I liked how it smoothed out my fine lines almost instantly. This potion isn’t truly a Reject, as I wouldn’t mind using it again. However, since there are so many other products I have to use up and, Instant Youth Potion isn’t easily purchased at a store, I have no plans on replacing it.

Have you been doing good with purging at your own Vanity? Which of these products have you used?

January’s Toss or Trash Segment

I am challenging myself to finish more products this year and I have been doing, in my opinion, a grand job!

Here are my finishes for January, starting with the top of my head…

DSCF0032

Suave’s Moroccan conditioner for color treated hair. This one is a keeper just for the fragrance! This large bottle runs about $5. It doesn’t strip my hair color as fast as a regular conditioner for dry hair and I use the matching shampoo. I don’t have to be skimpy on using a lot of this conditioner since it is so inexpensive.

I keep at least 3 deodorants in rotation because, it seems, if I use just one all the time, I become resistant to its affects. Degree is one of my favorite brands as it works fairly hard…

DSCF0056 DSCF0057

Plus, I love the smell of lilacs. Not that I continually smell my pits after using this. Hee hee! This Degree line doesn’t leave white marks on my darker clothing so it’s a keeper too.

Boy, my poor hands have taken a beating this winter! Thank goodness I stock up on Silk Elements Shea Butter with Olive Oil Hand Cream when Sally’s has it on sale before Christmas…

DSCF0036

This is another product that I love the fragrance. I highly recommend this hand cream and it is my favorite. Extra points for it keeping my elbows soft too.

It seems that over the last 3 months my Toss or Trash segments have the running theme of moisturize. Lush’s Charity Pot lotion was highly recommended to me for being super humectant but, I allowed myself to get side-tracked while I was at the Lush store and got its predecessor, Formulae Known As…

DSCF0055

I did get a little sample of Charity Pot and in retrospect, I should have gone with that because it is must more moisturizing than Formulae Known As. I won’t be replacing this lotion but will be getting Charity Pot next time.

Another product that I never want to be without is Bath & Body Works’ Stress Relief body wash…

You won’t find me without the partnering lotion of this fragrance either. Not only does this body wash not dry my skin out but, it is like bathing in liquid Valium. Stress Relief has been a staple at the vanity before there even was a vanity!!! If fragrance has an effect on you, let this one melt away all your tension and let it flow right down the shower drain. This wash, along with the lotion, are easy to snag for around $5 on sale at B&BW throughout the year.

How have you been doing with finishing up products?

Toss or Trash: November 2014 Part II

I’m clearing out and making room and, I love it! I’m finishing up lots and lots of products. These nail polish remover pads from L.A. Colors were awesome!…

DSCF0043 DSCF0044

Even though it states that they are strawberry scented, these still smell like nail polish remover. But, if they are not the hardest working polish remover pads, I don’t know what is! I actually had to use about two to three per removal only because they are rather small but, this formula didn’t dry my cuticles out one bit. I’ll pick up more when I can find them.

With no doubt, my hair has gone through a huge change since leaving Florida and moving to Colorado. I’ve been trying lots of different moisturizing products in my quest for soft tresses….

DSCF0002 DSCF0003 DSCF0004

I was lured into thinking Tresemme’s Liquid Gold Shine Therapy would make my hair shimmery-golden. Not really. And, it didn’t give me any moisture either. The only thing it did do was keep my hair from becoming overly frizzy. However, Bath and Body Works White Citrus Shower Gel is still one of my favorite BBW fragrance. And, their washes never dry out my skin. That one I’ll replace.

I was giving this Avon lipstick sample with my last order of Moisture Effect Eye Makeup Remover (one of my very favorite eye makeup removers and I highly recommend). Take a look at what the sample looks like after just ONE try…

DSCF0018 DSCF0020 DSCF0019

The product is so soft that it just mushed up! Trust me, I’m not a Messy Marvin with my makeup but this was ridiculous.  I think the name is ‘Pink Flush’ but I don’t know which line it is from. As much as I love the color, this lippie not only had a problem staying in the tube, it roamed around my lips as well! Too messy so, I threw it away.

Earlier this summer, I got this free sample of Urban Decay’s Vitamin Infusion Complexion Prep Spray. Sadly, I just didn’t find that this spray added anything to my skin. My pores didn’t seem to be minimized nor did my makeup become less shiny throughout the day…

DSCF0049

My makeup didn’t seem to, noticeably, last longer, either. If you have used this, I’d love to know what your experience has been.

I’m really on a roll using up products. I’m looking for bottles and tubes that are almost used up and grabbing them to finish eyeing a spot for them in the Toss or Trash feature. In my quest to find such items, I discovered a bottle of Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength LIne-Reducing Concentrate I had. I have just finished up my last bottle and knew I trip to Kiehl’s was in order. However, finding this backup bottle saved me almost $60 that I didn’t need to spend! Plus, I found a couple of bottle of Suave body lotion that I caught on sale earlier this year so I didn’t need to replace any of those.

What was the last beauty product you used up?

Toss or Trash: It’s Been A While But I Have A Pile

It’s been a while since I blogged a Toss or Trash post. I’ve been saving up my empties and putting them in a box. This weekend I went to look for something and I found two boxes full of trash! Yuck! I photographed these and got them out of the house!!!

Let’s start with the hair products. I just finished up L’Oreal’s EverStrong Overnight Hair Repair Treatment. I love that stuff! And, I’m going to miss it. I gave up buying L’Oreal products this year.  I am choosing to stop purchasing from, at least, one company a year that continues to test on animals. Thus, I won’t be replacing any of the L’Oreal haircare products that I have used for so long. And that includes the Total Repair 5 shampoo and conditioner. Here, you see that I finished the conditioner. As much as I love these two products, I love animals more…

DSCF0018

Suave’s Moroccan Deep Conditioner has made my hair super soft. And, the smell is lovely!!!! I found that I needed to use a lot of it for my hair to turn out soft though. I couldn’t be stingy and still get my wide-tooth comb through my hair. All in all, I would say that all of these are trash, meaning I would buy them again. But, since L’Oreal and I have parted ways, these won’t get replaced with same. And the Moroccan Conditioner was just OK. I am placing that in the trash column. (Yes, I know Suave is made by Unilever who still tests on animals.)

Next up are two spray leave-in conditioners…

DSCF0021

I purchased both of these over 2 years ago at a beauty show in Orlando. It’s funny how both of them became empty at about the same time.

First, Black 15 in 1 is a brand I had high hopes for. When I purchased this leave-in conditioner, I also purchased the shampoo and conditioner by that brand. Of the three, I did like the leave-in conditioner the most but, it is not a product that blew me away. I have no intention of repurchasing it…

DSCF0023

I have quite a love affair with leave-in conditioners. As I have aged, my hair is getting thinner and becomes dried out faster. I knew this was coming as I saw it happening to my mother. At least I am working on being proactive and treating my hair the best that I can. 12 Benefits leave-in conditioner is a winner because I feel that it helps keep my hair healthy. I would repurchase this one if I knew where I could readily pick it up. However, I have never seen it in any store or salon that I have visited…

DSCF0022

Next are the face products. Kiehl’s is my go-to brand. They give out samples and that’s what wins me over. I used Avon’s Anew line from the beginning, however, when I went to a blogger event at Nordstrom’s and Kiehl’s gave their demonstrations and I took home samples, that’s all it took for me to fall hook, line and sinker! I won’t lie; the Midnight Recovery Concentrate is expensive. This bottle is $70 and it’s only 1.7 ounces. It does last me a year, though. I use about 5 to 6 drops per night. When I am not testing out another product for a review, Midnight Recovery Concentrate is my best and favorite love.

Reviva Labs Vitamin E Stick was a discovery from doing a review for them. This simple little balm stick does a lot of different jobs. I use it on my lips and all around my mouth, for my dry cuticles and I will rub some of it under my eyes when I feel like my skin is especially dry there. I also put it on pimples so they don’t scar. For $2.50, you get a work horse! I have already replaced this as I don’t want to be without it. Now, for Avon’s Lip Treatment…

DSCF0026

OK, this stuff is great! What is not great is that I had to swipe my finger in it to use it. I know I could have used a Q-tip (too hairy) or a lip brush (too much of a hassle at bedtime) but, it just got to be gross. And, since I have medium-length nails, it really got to be a hassle towards the bottom of the jar. And, I think this little, bitty jar lasted me like over 2 years!!! It just couldn’t be used up!!!! I was so happy to finally finish it! As much as I liked how it worked on my lips and kept them moist, I don’t like the packaging so I will not be repurchasing this. Look, the label didn’t even last as long as the product!…

DSCF0025

I moved from Orlando to Denver last year and came out here before my husband. He stayed behind for several months to not only pack up our house but to deal with selling it and all that. When he told me he went to Bath and Body Works and asked for empty boxes to pack all my products from them, and they gave him CASES so he could pack up all my candles, lotions and potions from them, I was shamed into facing the fact that I owned my own B&BW!!! I have diligently worked on not only reducing my inventory but also, not so readily buying their new fragrances every season. Here’s what I have used up in the past few months…

DSCF0030

But, don’t you just LOVE getting those minis to try out fragrances!!!! I do! And, their Stress Relief body wash and lotion are stables at the vanity. That’s a good thing!!! I loved all of these fragrances. The ‘Be Enchanted’ was a hot passion for me when it first came out too.

Last, are the body and hand lotions…

DSCF0028

La Source is from Evelyn and Crabtree and I love their hand lotions. There was an outlet store I visited often when I lived in Orlando so I had quite a few of these around. Now I’m seeing the end of them and miss that store! If you are looking for a very moisturizing hand lotion with instant results, you will want to get yourself La Source. There’s not much of a fragrance to this one; it’s busy being therapeutic!!!

Proclaim’s Coconut & Macadamia Nut Oil hand lotion didn’t smell as nice as I thought it would. Coming from Sally’s Beauty Supply, I thought it would be a winner. But, I won’t be seeking to replace this one just because it wasn’t all that great.

Jergen’s BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream lotion smells very nice. And, I liked how it made my skin soft. But, that’s about all it did. So, there’s no ‘illuminating’ and ‘firming’ like the claims state. I’m rather disappointed too.

Have you tried any of these products? See any that you want to try out?

Toss Or Trash: Pretty Cool When Even The Trash Smells Good

The Toss or Trash series hasn’t been around in a while however, that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been anything tossed or trashed! I’m still working on where to take my blog photographs now that it’s too cold outside. I also, confessingly, haven’t kept up on photographing the used items and then physically throwing them away. Eeewww! Luckily, nothing is rotten or gross.

As a refresher, here’s how the Toss or Trash series works: Toss means I have no intentions of buying that item again. It gets a thumbs down. Trash means I used it up and, would purchase it again. There can be middle of the road too but, I always give my opinion on why it is either Toss or Trash

Look! This one even works to keep odors away!!!…

auto curler swatches 019Let’s just say that my husband has different closet habits than I do. I don’t share my closet with him because of that. But, they both do get air fresheners. I like Renuzit’s Super Odor Killer fragrance, which I always get from his closet. I buy these by the half dozen and use them also in the kitty room too. So, it is easier just to buy the Super Odor Killer fragrance and use it everywhere. I get them at Walmart for a bit less than a dollar. If they have price rollbacks on any, I’ll get them for my closet. However, this rather neutral fragrance works without complaints in my husband’s closet and in the kitty room.

Milani Cosmetics is one of my favorites. They make several different mascaras, and one of my top favorites (that would be Total Lash Cover Mascara), but this one isn’t one of them. I did a review on this one called ‘Runway Lashes’. Oh, it’s Trash….I’m just done with it. And, I do like it…

auto curler swatches 041 auto curler swatches 042Its time to go arrived. I do NOT like spiders and just the thought of the so-called ‘spider leg’ lashes curls my TOES!!! So, there i’\ wass no internal mental struggle about throwing away mascara that is done dried up.

As as mentioned, this one isn’t a favorite mascara but it is a 6 on a scale of 10. There are just so many other mascaras I like better.

If I want my closets to smell fresh you can bet I love fresh-smelling laundry. Bath and Body Works makes my favorite fresh-washed laundry fragrances in a body wash;

auto curler swatches 040‘Sea Island Cotton’ is a core fragrance with Bath and Body Works. I used this one for the first part of last year while I lived with my brother and his family while I transitioned from Orlando to the Denver area. My brother is extremely sensitive to odors so this one was a good choice as it isn’t over-powering. It is also a good crossover fragrance for men since it smells like laundry and not flowery. My husband doesn’t mind using it. This is Trash because I already have a replacement.

I talked about my favorite cuticle oil, Dadi Oil, in a past radio show. You can find the link to that here. My raving comments have not waned at all for this cuticle oil. It’s Trash but I do have one beef with it; it’s hard to come by. It is sold through nail salons and I have found only one that sells it here in Denver. But, she only sells the little sample bottle. This one was the last of my full-size…

auto curler swatches 069And I SWEAR!!! This is NOT real chicken POOP!!!! Not even close!!! I’m having a hard time finding more Chicken Poop, because I want more Chicken Poop for my lips!!! I already reviewed this and told you why…

auto curler swatches 068Seriously, one of the best lip salves I have ever used! It’s Trash and I want a replacement!! Who would have thought Chicken Poop would be so hard to come by. Hmmmm…..

Ah, I feel slightly unburdened getting rid of the used-up beauties. Share with me which ones you have tried before and if you liked them.

Bath and Body Works: Shea Cashmere Hand Cream

We have all decided that Bath and Body Works is one of our favorite stores, right? Who said no?! You don’t count!!!

Now, to all those that are in their right senses, let’s talk about this yummy trial size: True Blue’s mini of ‘Shea Cashmere’…

If you like lotions that have that extra ‘slip’ feeling, you’ll love this. When I first purchased ‘Shea Cashmere’ I had gave it a whiff at the store before purchasing. So, I had assumed that the Cashmere part was due to the lush fragrance. If you like ‘Cashmere’, ‘Black Cashmere’ or ‘Cashmere Mist’, all by Donna Karan, then you will like ‘Shea Butter’. That ‘cashmere’ word ties these fragrances all together. I think B&BW was giving a gentle nod to Ms. Karan.

However, there is cashmere extract in this cream. Here is the list of ingredients…

Go ahead and click on the photo so the print isn’t so miniscule. It’s nice not to see mineral oil as an ingredient. B&BW used it for years. They may still use it in some products, but the ones I like don’t have it.

This is a hand cream but I didn’t keep it just to my hands. I ran it up my arms, to my elbows. What do you know, my elbows liked it too! In fact, I liked it a lot. That ‘slip’ feeling just feels good. And it doesn’t make the skin sticky or tacky. My knuckles are my indicator how long a lotion is moisturizing. So, my knuckles stayed soft, easily until my next hand-washing.

My vote is yes for Bath and Body Works’ ‘Shea Cashmere’. I like the feel of the lotion and the fragrance is wonderful. If you are sensitive to fragrances, you might want to check this out first before you purchase. It is a very powerful smell and may not appeal to those that get headaches from perfumes and such. The lotion is very fast absorbing so I can get back to my work at hand without anything falling from my hand.

If you purchase stuff at B&BW without one of their coupons, I’m sending you to be back of the class! I never buy anything there without a coupon! Sign up on their webpage and get some coupons sent to you. Most of the time when I purchase something (with said coupon, of course), I will get a survey on my receipt. It has always been for a $10 savings on a purchase over $30. And, the very, very coolest part of that survey coupon, it never expires! I save mine and use them when I don’t have a store coupon.

And, another good thing, these little trial size make the sweetest gifts for RAOK (random acts of kindness). 😀

New Fall Candles Have Arrived At Bath and Body Works

I knew the Fall Bath and Body Works candles were on their way…

Because Kari from Once Bitten Blog tweeted about it. I knew my wallet was going to be empty soon! But, that’s why I hoard my receipt surveys from B&BW; they never expire!!

I had the cutest young guy helping me find all the new fragrances. He was new to working at B&BW and I found him to be a delight. It was a good thing my sniffer was working this day, he introduced me to a lot of new scents.

I snapped away (with my cell phone) a lot of photos to show…

I hit up the mini candle bar. Since the medium and large size candles weren’t on sale yet, I stuck with the little ones so I could get started. Plus, I would find out which ones I have to get in the larger size.

The minis were 3 for $5 so I got 6. Here’s the fragrances I got to try out:

-Pumpkin Caramel Latte

-Black Pepper Bergamot

-Lavender Vanilla

-French Baguette

-Mahogany Teakwood

-Cinnamon Nut Bread (which has been the candle of the day today)

I know I’m getting the Black Pepper Bergamot fragrance. I love almost any fragrance that has Black Pepper in it. Years back, Bath and Body Works had a mens’ line called Molton Brown. When they had it all on clearance, I picked up ‘Re-Charge Black Pepper Body Soother’ lotion. I got it for me, not the hubs.

And the Mahogany Teakwood, another masculine scent, is on the will-buy list too. The French Baguette isn’t as strong as I would like. The Caramel Pumpkin Latte is just one of several pumpkin scents they have in the Fall line up.There are several cider and fresh apple scents as well as some favorites from last year. My fav: Marshmallow Fireside!

Have you seen the new Fall candles in your Bath and Body Works store? Which ones are you loving?
