Toss or Trash: September, Part 1

I have learned, since becoming a beauty blogger, the true value of completely finishing a product. Goodness knows, I used to be a one-trick pony using only one shampoo until it was all gone. Never changing facial washes until the one I was currently using was used up. Now, I have no less than 4 shampoos in the shower and at least 3 conditioners going. So, when I finish up ANYTHING, it’s worthy of a post!

I have quite an assortment to show…

DSCF0034

From haircare to skincare, this Toss or Trash segment has a main theme of MOISTURIZE. Starting with the big ass can of hairspray…

DSCF0035

Tresemme’s most popular hairspray is the Extra Firm Control, all day humidity resistance. Does this one do the job? You bet! And this can lasted me for months. Not that I’m light on the spray, mind you. What I didn’t like was that this hairspray has dried out my already dry tresses. Even applying gently, at least in my mind, it has dried out my hair. I used it all up but, I will not be purchasing this one again. I need a hairspray that puts back in some moisture.

My skin is also dry and, getting drier by the minute. So, a moisturizing wash is a must…

I received this small bottle of Shea Terra Organics African Black Soap Body Wash in one of my monthly subscription boxes. I’m sorry that I don’t remember which one. This sample was Menthe or, had a peppermint oil in it. Fabulous! It wasn’t over the top peppermint like some body soaps can be. This was delicate and still refreshing. I liked the way this felt on my skin after a long morning run. I loved using it on my face as well as my body. I didn’t feel like my skin’s acid mantel was being stripped off with this wash. I felt super clean. This is one that I would replace.

After washing with Shea Terra, the next step is to dry off and moisturize my body…

DSCF0036 DSCF0037

The fragrance of Suave’s Moroccan Infusion body lotion is divine. My skin drank this up. I could tell it was doing my skin good because my normally, very dry elbows stayed smooth. I did feel that the staying power of the moisturizer wasn’t there all day, however. I have since gotten into the habit of reapplying a lotion before bedtime. So, I am rather surprised that with all the moisturizing properties listed in this lotion that it didn’t last the entire day. My skin didn’t seem any more radiant, either. For that reason, it’s trash and I won’t be replacing it.

I’m super fussy about getting moisture into my hair but I’m even more fanatic about it with my face. My age and the dry climate where I live are not doing me any favors!! The war is ON!!…

Kiehl’s is my saving grace. I’m SO happy I have discovered this brand. I received this eye cream at a store grand opening almost 2 years ago. Even though I have not used it regularly, as I test other eye creams out, this was my go-to when I wasn’t testing. I’d say it’s my staple. Rosa Arctica Eye Cream is thick enough that I instantly feel the moisturizing happening. However, it isn’t so heavy that it makes my foundation look off or clumpy. There isn’t really any smell to it but I can tell that it is a higher-end product by how well it performs. I am definitely replacing this.

What’s in your arsenal for keeping moisture in your hair and skin? Have you tried any of these products before?

Kiehl’s: Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash and Micro-Blur Skin Perfector

I am excited to share with you two new products from my favorite skincare line: Kiehl’s. Kiehl’s has been my ‘go-to’ skincare line for the past two years. So, let’s talk about these two new kids on the block. One is a cleanser called ‘Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash’ and the other is a skin treatment product named ‘Micro-Blur Skin Perfector’…

DSCF0013

Let’s discuss the Micro-Blur Skin Perfector first. It’s a new favorite!…

DSCF0006 DSCF0007

It is so good to my skin! I use it every morning after I hydrate. I use this whether I put on foundation afterwards or not. I can’t say that this hides my imperfections but it does blur the appearance of large pores and fine lines…

DSCF0010

This product glides on. It doesn’t pill up even if you tend to overwork it. Truthfully, it doesn’t take much product and lays across the skin smoothly. The sample I put on the back of my hand is enough for me to use across my entire face and down my neck…

DSCF0008 DSCF0009

It’s subtle but it does soften the spots on my skin. There is a slight fragrance that might give issue to those with a very sensitive nose but, I found that the smell didn’t linger one bit. It’s not claiming to be a primer but I use it as such. Since this is recommended for all skin types and is paraben-free, you should try it!

Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash is a long title for a face wash that is simple. It contains no parabens and is soap-free. It really cleans your face; makeup and all! This wash foams up good and sudsy, which is surprising since it contains no soap. It smells just like Calendula flowers and, is such a wonderfully relaxing fragrance to unwind to at the end of the day. I look forward to using it because of that!…

DSCF0003

DSCF0004

You will notice that this is recommended for normal to oily skin types. Well, I sure don’t have oily skin. So you can imagine how skeptical I was that this was going to make may skin feel OK after a good washing. So, yes….WOW! I always follow up after washing with a moisturizer anyway (I use Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate and Midnight Recovery Concentrate at night) however, my skin didn’t feel extremely tight or dry afterwards. It just felt super clean. And I loved how it tackled removing my makeup without needed to use a separate product for that…

DSCF0011

Even my husband likes using Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash. He likes the foaming action and how clean his skin feels afterwards. Also, since the fragrance is more of an herbal note, I think this wash is great for men and woman. It sure doesn’t take but a partial pump to get enough wash to completely wash my face and neck.

You can purchase these two products and other awesome Kiehl’s items from their website, stand-alone stores that are popping up across the country or, at fine department stores like Nordstrom’s and Dillards.

These products were provided to me for review. These are my own, honest opinions.

Toss or Trash: It’s Been A While But I Have A Pile

It’s been a while since I blogged a Toss or Trash post. I’ve been saving up my empties and putting them in a box. This weekend I went to look for something and I found two boxes full of trash! Yuck! I photographed these and got them out of the house!!!

Let’s start with the hair products. I just finished up L’Oreal’s EverStrong Overnight Hair Repair Treatment. I love that stuff! And, I’m going to miss it. I gave up buying L’Oreal products this year.  I am choosing to stop purchasing from, at least, one company a year that continues to test on animals. Thus, I won’t be replacing any of the L’Oreal haircare products that I have used for so long. And that includes the Total Repair 5 shampoo and conditioner. Here, you see that I finished the conditioner. As much as I love these two products, I love animals more…

DSCF0018

Suave’s Moroccan Deep Conditioner has made my hair super soft. And, the smell is lovely!!!! I found that I needed to use a lot of it for my hair to turn out soft though. I couldn’t be stingy and still get my wide-tooth comb through my hair. All in all, I would say that all of these are trash, meaning I would buy them again. But, since L’Oreal and I have parted ways, these won’t get replaced with same. And the Moroccan Conditioner was just OK. I am placing that in the trash column. (Yes, I know Suave is made by Unilever who still tests on animals.)

Next up are two spray leave-in conditioners…

DSCF0021

I purchased both of these over 2 years ago at a beauty show in Orlando. It’s funny how both of them became empty at about the same time.

First, Black 15 in 1 is a brand I had high hopes for. When I purchased this leave-in conditioner, I also purchased the shampoo and conditioner by that brand. Of the three, I did like the leave-in conditioner the most but, it is not a product that blew me away. I have no intention of repurchasing it…

DSCF0023

I have quite a love affair with leave-in conditioners. As I have aged, my hair is getting thinner and becomes dried out faster. I knew this was coming as I saw it happening to my mother. At least I am working on being proactive and treating my hair the best that I can. 12 Benefits leave-in conditioner is a winner because I feel that it helps keep my hair healthy. I would repurchase this one if I knew where I could readily pick it up. However, I have never seen it in any store or salon that I have visited…

DSCF0022

Next are the face products. Kiehl’s is my go-to brand. They give out samples and that’s what wins me over. I used Avon’s Anew line from the beginning, however, when I went to a blogger event at Nordstrom’s and Kiehl’s gave their demonstrations and I took home samples, that’s all it took for me to fall hook, line and sinker! I won’t lie; the Midnight Recovery Concentrate is expensive. This bottle is $70 and it’s only 1.7 ounces. It does last me a year, though. I use about 5 to 6 drops per night. When I am not testing out another product for a review, Midnight Recovery Concentrate is my best and favorite love.

Reviva Labs Vitamin E Stick was a discovery from doing a review for them. This simple little balm stick does a lot of different jobs. I use it on my lips and all around my mouth, for my dry cuticles and I will rub some of it under my eyes when I feel like my skin is especially dry there. I also put it on pimples so they don’t scar. For $2.50, you get a work horse! I have already replaced this as I don’t want to be without it. Now, for Avon’s Lip Treatment…

DSCF0026

OK, this stuff is great! What is not great is that I had to swipe my finger in it to use it. I know I could have used a Q-tip (too hairy) or a lip brush (too much of a hassle at bedtime) but, it just got to be gross. And, since I have medium-length nails, it really got to be a hassle towards the bottom of the jar. And, I think this little, bitty jar lasted me like over 2 years!!! It just couldn’t be used up!!!! I was so happy to finally finish it! As much as I liked how it worked on my lips and kept them moist, I don’t like the packaging so I will not be repurchasing this. Look, the label didn’t even last as long as the product!…

DSCF0025

I moved from Orlando to Denver last year and came out here before my husband. He stayed behind for several months to not only pack up our house but to deal with selling it and all that. When he told me he went to Bath and Body Works and asked for empty boxes to pack all my products from them, and they gave him CASES so he could pack up all my candles, lotions and potions from them, I was shamed into facing the fact that I owned my own B&BW!!! I have diligently worked on not only reducing my inventory but also, not so readily buying their new fragrances every season. Here’s what I have used up in the past few months…

DSCF0030

But, don’t you just LOVE getting those minis to try out fragrances!!!! I do! And, their Stress Relief body wash and lotion are stables at the vanity. That’s a good thing!!! I loved all of these fragrances. The ‘Be Enchanted’ was a hot passion for me when it first came out too.

Last, are the body and hand lotions…

DSCF0028

La Source is from Evelyn and Crabtree and I love their hand lotions. There was an outlet store I visited often when I lived in Orlando so I had quite a few of these around. Now I’m seeing the end of them and miss that store! If you are looking for a very moisturizing hand lotion with instant results, you will want to get yourself La Source. There’s not much of a fragrance to this one; it’s busy being therapeutic!!!

Proclaim’s Coconut & Macadamia Nut Oil hand lotion didn’t smell as nice as I thought it would. Coming from Sally’s Beauty Supply, I thought it would be a winner. But, I won’t be seeking to replace this one just because it wasn’t all that great.

Jergen’s BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream lotion smells very nice. And, I liked how it made my skin soft. But, that’s about all it did. So, there’s no ‘illuminating’ and ‘firming’ like the claims state. I’m rather disappointed too.

Have you tried any of these products? See any that you want to try out?

Kiehl’s Skin Tone Correcting and Beautifying BB Cream

Ever since I got the opportunity to attend a special Central Florida Beauty Blogger Nordstrom’s beauty preview last year, I have been hooked on Kiehl’s products. Then Kiehl’s opened their own store in that same mall and, the Central Florida Beauty Bloggers were invited to their Grand Opening. As I learned more and more about Kiehl’s and got to try out samples (Kiehl’s is big on samples), I found even more of their products to love.

So, when they introduced a BB Cream, I knew I was going to get it at the next opportunity. And, with an SPF 50, it was a grand idea…

Mega swatch day 104 BB Creams are sheer so I use this either as a moisturizer before putting on foundation or, when I am going to have a no actual makeup day. I still get the moisturizing properties and a healthy dose of SPF. The added vitamin C helps with the turn-over rate of my skin. Cheers for a healthy glow!

The Kiehl’s representative agreed that the light shade would be perfect for me…

Mega swatch day 105Even though it looks a bit dark right out of the bottle…

Mega swatch day 108I found that once blended in, I get a fresh look to go with protecting my skin…

Mega swatch day 109 Mega swatch day 110 Mega swatch day 111This BB Cream didn’t leave my skin tacky or shiny, as I find some BB Creams to be. And often, products with an SPF over 30 are hard to apply evenly on my skin. Kiehl’s dries to a semi-matte once I apply setting powder. I didn’t get shiny after just a couple of hours. Yet my skin felt supple.

I haven’t found a BB Cream that gives medium to full coverage. However, as far as including a healthy SPF of 50, keeping my skin soft and moisturized and aiding in the turnover of skin cells, Kiehl’s, literally, has me covered.

Have you tried Kiehl’s BB Cream? Is this something you would consider using?

Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Eye Cream; A Real Keeper For My Peepers

I got to be a part of Kiehl’s New Store Grand Opening last year at the Mall at Millenia, Orlando, FL. One of the great products I received was the Rosa Arctica Eye Cream. Fans, this is the bomb!

kiehls icing mani ugly face 002I have been using eye creams for at least 20 years. And I have tried a lot of different ones in those 2 decades. So, when I can say that this is a fantastic eye cream, I’m not kidding around!…

kiehls icing mani ugly face 004Keihl’s packaging theme is like an old-time apothecary. I’m very intrigued by that. And, at the same time drawn to the science of it. It isn’t necessary to google information on Rosa Artica either. It’s right on the box…

kiehls icing mani ugly face 006So, this is what Keihl’s claims for this product but, what are the ingredients? That’s what I want to know!…

kiehls icing mani ugly face 008Well, now I will need to do some googling because I really don’t know what all of these ingredients are. However, I do recommend that if you have sensitive skin, you give these ingredients a go-over. I have fairly behaving skin so I went ahead and tried it out…

kiehls icing mani ugly face 009

I found Rosa Arctica Eye Cream to be one of the richest and creamiest eye creams I have ever used. This made the skin around my eyes very soft and smoothed out, instantly, the fine lines around the outside of my eye area. I have used Kiehl’s for over 4 months. Even with moving to a much drier climate, my eye area continues to feel hydrated, soft and smooth. I have experienced no negative results from using this eye cream.

I’m so confident that Rosa Arctica Eye Cream is perfect for my skin that I can show you a photo of my eye after 4 months of using this product…

kiehls icing mani ugly face 032I do have on eye makeup; mascara, pencil liner and shadow. However, I don’t have any other makeup on my skin. I do have a disclaimer, however. That prominent line, directly under my eye, is a scar from reconstructive surgery I had after a car accident. It is a 30 year old scar and it was directly under my lashes back then. But, as you can see, that is really the only deep line I have. So, for a 51 year old face, this month, I think Kiehl’s is a winner for this face!

This product was provided to me as a promotional item. This is my own, honest opinion.

Grand Opening of Kiehl’s Store in Orlando, FL

Kiehl’s skin and body care products has taken a front seat with me. I’m in love with these products. And it all started out with a sample. When I told Chris Salgrado, the President of Kiehl’s USA this, he stated that is why they hand out samples; it is the best way to let people know how Kiehl’s products work right away.

About a month ago, I spotted a stand-alone Kiehl’s store at the Mall of Millenia, Orlando, FL. Naturally, I went right to it. I found out that the store had just opened four days ago! The wonderful store manager, Dina, told me about their Grand Opening coming up and that Chris Salgrado would be attending as well as many of the NYC corporate personnel. I got a hold of my Beauty Blogger of Central Florida girlfriends and asked them to come along and make an event of it.

Chris Salgardo cuts the opening ribbon with Dina, Store Manager, at his right.

Kiehl’s was founded in 1851 by John Kiehl in New York City. Kiehl’s is a company rich in its history as well as giving to many charities. Their current charity is RxArt, a children’s healing charity…Artist, Kenny Scharf, designed the limited edition promotional products to contribute to this charity.

I got a chance to not only talk with many of the NYC Kiehl’s corporate staff, but also to actually talk with and ask questions with Chris…

I’m always up for a photo with a handsome man! But he really is a genuine and caring person. He was thrilled that just a few samples got me hooked on Kiehl’s products. I knew I would be adding to my collection at the event too. I will review those with you on a later post.

I love the old apothecary feel the stores still keep. They have a blend of old world with modern technology…

The men’s line is very extensive. Chris expressed special interest in getting the word out that men need to not only take care of their fine lines and wrinkles but to protect their skin from harmful sun rays. It’s no longer acceptable to not know that unprotected skin exposed to sun will cause cancer. Kiehl’s keeps in mind that men like their products to reflect their masculinity and address their skin needs that are, to some degree, different than women’s.

At the Grand Opening, Kiehl’s was providing one on one skin care advise and mini facials. Fellow beauty blogger, Nidia of Beauty Lit From Within blog, got a facial treat…

And my friend, Steph of Imperfectly Painted blog, shared the festivities…

I see she was loving the products too!…

The entire staff at Kiehl’s at Mall of Millenia, Orlando, FL, is gracious and knowledgeable. Do check out this store and, if you don’t live in Orlando, there are many stores to visit. However, you can shop online just as easy as clicking here. And, don’t forget to ask for your sample. You might just discover the best skincare you have ever tried.

Kiehl’s: Midnight Recovery Concentrate

Oh, I still have tons of samples/trial size products. It seems they are collecting faster than I can test and review. Today’s sample review created quite a big stir for me. So, it’s getting a front of the vanity showing today.

In June, Neiman Marcus held a Sunday brunch for the Beauty Bloggers of Central Florida to introduce us to the many beauty lines they carry. I posted about it here. At that brunch, Ms. Rebecca Weiss, with the Kiehl’s line shared some of their fine products. One that she had a few of us sample on the backs of our hands was ‘Midnight Recovery Concentrate’. It spread out along my skin and I could see it absorbing right in without any rubbing at all. And then the smell…..lavender supreme!!! That got my interest piqued right then.

In our goodie bags, there were several samples of Kiehl’s and that particular product was one of them. I couldn’t wait to try it out on my face. This little sample lasted me 5 nights and I even shared once with my hubs…

After just one use, the next morning my skin was visibly softer and felt softer than I can ever remember. Yes, that good!!! And yes, that dramatic. I knew there was something special about this product and I was not at all disappointed.

I’m not going to lie; this is expensive but it is one of those OMG-IT’S-SO-GREAT worth it items. To make it the best buy, I got the large 1.7 oz and it was just a bit under $70. If you are a loyal reader, you know I really, REALLY have to like something to spend that much on it.

Kiehl’s packages look like they come from an old-time apothecary. Actually, the company was started in 1851 as a pharmacy in New York City. In keeping with their long history, Kiehl’s continues to use essential oils and botanicals in their products. I know the power oils and herbs and, so does my skin.

Besides the obvious lavender oil in ‘Midnight Recovery Concentrate’, there are many other essential oils working their wonder in this elixir. It’s hard to get a photo of the miniscule print, but if you are not able to enlarge it, I’ll tell you I counted 18 oils and botanials in this product.

This product isn’t a thick oil, but a thin one that absorbs into the skin extremely fast. The bottle is as fascinating as the product. It’s a dropper-like delivery system but with a very cool, modern twist to it…

Four drops of ‘Midnight Recovery Concentrate’ is all I need for my face and neck. And, my face stays smooth all the way until morning. I don’t know if this product would be suited for everyone, since it is an oil, albeit very natural ones. But for my slightly dry skin and, for reducing the fine lines I have, I think this is money very well spent. This is not the last you will hear about Kiehl’s!

Check out all the fun samples Ms. Weiss gave me with my purchase…

Indeed, this is the first of several Kiehl’s products that will be making their way to sit on the Pink Vanity.

Have you tried Kiehl’s products before?
