Black Radiance Lipsticks; Two Red Hot Colors

When I get a new product, I’m itchin’ to try it out. But, I refrain until I can take photos of it and swatches, as well. Heck, I even managed to photo one of these products on my lips…

It is only on a rare occasion that I find Black Radiance cosmetics. I know they are made by the same wonderful folks that make Wet ‘N Wild. When I do come upon them, I look for any new lip shades. Even though Black Radiance is marketed to women of color, I find that most of their lipsticks and glosses look awesome on me.

Here are the two lippies that I got…

Sadly, there are no names on these. Sort of odd since Wet ‘N Wild has some of the cleverest names for their products. Anyway, #5016 is a super deep magenta color. #5014 is a dark pink-red; definitely has the blue undertones.

This embossing makes me weak in the knees. I love things like this with makeup…

Swatching these two products reminded me exactly why I love red lipsticks…

Since I was on a roll, I went right ahead and applied # 5016. I wanted to see how it looked on me…

I found that this darker shade was not quite as dark when swatched or applied on my lips. Nevertheless, I really like the color and how it turned out.

These lippies are very creamy and smooth. After about 2 hours, I did feel like my lips were getting drier. However, I have moved to a much more arid climate and have been experiencing dry lips for months.

Black Radiance is a bit more expensive than Wet ‘N Wild. I don’t remember the exact prices of these lipsticks but I do remember that their 8 pan shadows run about $1 more than WnW. Still, I find their prices to be quite reasonable.

Do you think it’s cool that a drugstore brand put an embossing on their lipsticks?

My New Favorite Red Shimmer: Finger Paints Hollydazzle

Finger Paints made a Christmas/Holiday red that is off the charts! My camera just could not deal with it. But, I tried…

notd poop lots of swatches haul 001 notd poop lots of swatches haul 003‘Hollydazzle’ is right! What looks like just a bright red polish is just the beginning. Look at the different colors of shimmer…

notd poop lots of swatches haul 002 notd poop lots of swatches haul 023The above photo is in the sunny kitchen. It gives the best look at the true red shade and still shows the shimmers. And those shimmers look gold, magenta and red to me. I mean CHOCK full of shimmer!!!

notd poop lots of swatches haul 008 notd poop lots of swatches haul 006This is only 2 coats with a top coat of Color Club’s Eco Top Coat. I found this polish super easy to apply.  I still have this polish on, it’s been 3 full days and I don’t even show tip wear. I could possibly wear this all the way to Christmas.

‘Hollydazzle’ has just become my new, favorite red shimmer polish. Do you have a favorite red?

Studio M: Sparks Fly For A Holiday Look

It’s a crying shame that there are no Rite Aid drugstores in Florida. However, it’s a stroke of luck that I have a friend in Wisconsin, where there are RA, who can pick up some polishes for me. And when I saw the new Studio M polishes, I was burning up my email begging my friend to snag me some. I made this one into a Holiday manicure…

nail swatches Gosh 001nail swatches Gosh 002 nail swatches Gosh 003“Sparks Fly’ is very unique in my collection. The name is cute and I love hairy glitter. It doesn’t seem that many folks like bar glitter, but I do!

nail swatches Gosh 005 nail swatches Gosh 004Using Revlon’s ‘Cosmic’ from their Moon Candy collection, I whipped up some Holiday cheer for my nails. This dark green creme is almost a blackened green on the nails. But it does allow the red and silver glitter to twinkle…

nail swatches Gosh 009I did have to do a bit of glitter fishing as the bars would all end up at the tip. And, up close you can see that the clear base didn’t always smooth out.

Using Lumos Instant Impact Base Coat, I applied 2 coats of  Revlon’s ‘Cosmic’and then two coats of Studio M’s ‘Sparks Fly’…

nail swatches Gosh 015A lighter green shade would have given me the perfect look I was going for. But, Revlon’s Moon Drops creme polishes are some of the easiest cremes to work with. I don’t mind this creation.

Do you like hairy glitters? Does this manicure make you think of a big, mess of curly Christmas ribbons?

China Glaze’s Prey Tell: A Halloween Brew

Here’s a mixing of a witch’s brew…

China Glaze’s ‘Prey Tell’ which is a dark brick red…

And, add to that a wicked orange glitter; a swipe of Sally Hansen’s ‘Pumpkin Spice’…

And you can create a fun concoction for Halloween…

Three coats of ‘Prey Tell’ and two coats for the accent of ‘Pumpkin Spice’, all topped off with Lumos Top Coat.

Nabi: Dark Red Polish For A Halloween Bloody Nails Look

When I first saw this polish, I KNEW I was going to use it as a Halloween manicure! Just look!…

Nabi nailed it with ‘Dark Red’ as THE blood red. This bottle looks like it is filled with blood. Here’s what it looks like on my nails…

This is only one coat. I didn’t mean for it to look so terrible. It so looks like I got bloody nails. Ewwww…

As I was sitting at my table waiting for this coat to dry, I thought I’d see if I could lighten up the mood with this glitter…

‘Lilac Jumbo Glitter’ is also by Nabi and the name doesn’t lie. A translucent pale lavender jelly with hex, bar and micro iridescent glitter. Make that a LOT of glitter business going on. Adding that to ‘Dark Red’ got me this…

I put on 2 coats of ‘Lilac Jumbo Glitter’ over one coat of ‘Dark Red’. I didn’t need a top coat because that glitter laid down very smoothly and is so shiny. This look is a Bloody Birthday Celebration creation. LOL

This is what two coats of ‘Dark Red’ look like on the nail wheel, and then one with two coats of ‘Lilac Jumbo Glitter’…

It’s weird that on the nail wheel ‘Dark Red’ isn’t a blood red but more of a Christmas red.

And the removal was totally gory…

Eeeeee! I have clear soak-off gel on my nails and ‘Dark Red’ stained them bad. I was going to soak off the gel and reapply anyway but DANG!! This looks like I got my nails caught in a grinder!

In scrutinizing the gory photo, I see that my nail beds look rather healthy and that my free edge is really my own; no enhancements. I just had the clear bottom and top soak-off gel on them. And, thankfully, my nails grow fast. I wish the nick on my middle finger would heal as fast. But, with the nature of my work, I bump that area almost every day. Poor finger!!!

Cosmetic Arts: I’ll Name It ‘Victim’s Blood’ For Halloween

Deep, blood-red glitter…

Cheap too. But, uncanny richness and depth…

Right here for Halloween…

Three coats with a top coat of Lumos Top Coat. This polish was smooth. Application was awesome. This photo shows how it looks most of the time…

No name on Cosmetic Arts so my pick is ‘Victim’s Blood’…

A couple of rouge glitters! What can I say but this is a wicked Halloween polish. Do you like it?

elf: Python Collection Nail Polishes

I surprised myself when I saw the new elf polishes from the python collection. I didn’t think it would be anything new. Well, whether it is or isn’t, it didn’t matter. I got 4 of ‘em anyway…

The silver nail, to the far left, is the Studio M that I reviewed here. The purple shade that is next to it is not part of the elf collection either. So the third nail in starts with the new elf collection. Silly, elf…they didn’t name their polishes. There is a blackened green with green micro-glitter; a dark red with an orange/gold shimmer; a blackened green (again) but with teal micro-glitter; and a dark eggplant purple with dark magenta and blue micro-glitter.

These are the shades that I love to wear…

And this is with just two coats. However, I think someone that is very skilled at polishing nails could get away with just one coat. There’s no need to apply a top coat as these are shiny all by themselves…

The two photos above are the best that captured the elusive purple, on the far right.

It’s easy to be gushy on elf’s new collection. I adore these shades.

Did you get any of the elf python pattern topped polishes? Which shades do you like?

China Glaze: I Herd That From The Safari Collection

While my nails are in rehab, I can fondly, sort of, go through my photos of swatches and remember some good times. I bought nail wheels this week because I have so many new and old polishes that haven’t been swatched. It’s going to be a marathon on wheels. It will surely do my nails good to continue to recuperate.

I should show more of the Safari collection that China Glaze put out before another collection shows up. However, every one of the shades from that collection were lovely. They were unique for my collection. I had a lot of favorites, unable to pick just one.

How about this one…

This is ‘I Herd That’ and it is a special one from the whole collection. I would think this shade would be better for a Christmas collection but hey, why wait?

‘I Herd That’ has colors in it that do make me think of the Serengeti, as well. It is a micro-glitter with bronze, gold and red. I don’t know how I can associate colors of the Serengeti with something that could be in a Christmas collection but, that’s the fun and quirkiness of the beauty industry.

I still enjoyed the heck out of wearing this color…

It looks gritty because it is. I, actually, don’t mind that. When it makes something look this awesome, I’m very OK with texture. Notice something, though. I only put one coat on my thumb. So, for a more toned down look that could be office-friendly, this just could do it. Let me know what you think because I don’t work in an office setting and I wear anything.

‘I Herd That’ isn’t disco ball sparkly. It’s almost matted. And I think that’s what gives this a softer personality. I didn’t put on any top coat because I liked it just the way it was. And it wore very well. This polish gave a good wear for the 4 days I kept it on. And, ‘I Herd That’ was one that I was reluctant to remove, I enjoyed it so much. It must have been reluctant to leave me too because it took some of that extra ‘get this glitter off’ work. Even though, I could easily bring this polish back out at Christmas.

How about wearing this to work…yay or nay? Do you like the softened glitter look?

Lipstick Mixtapes: The Blood

As a beauty blogger, I have been able to learn more about independent beauty companies. And, I consider myself honored to know some of the owners personally.

I purchased a lipstick from Safia, owner of Lipstick Mixtapes. She is a smokin’ hot makeup artist here in the Orlando area. And who but a makeup artist would know what makes a great lipstick? Safia is a proud member of the Beauty Bloggers of Central Florida and that’s how we got to meet.

This is the one I selected from her collection…

As I was scanning Safia’s display of the different colors, my eyes went right for this awesome red. I asked her what it was called and she said ‘The Blood’. But she said it such a seductive, Southern way, I made her repeat it because I loved the way ‘The Blood’ just sort of rolled out when she said it.

This is a red that almost anyone can wear. This is a matte red so it doesn’t feel creamy. However, that’s what you want with a matte. It applies very easily and you can tell then that it has true staying power. I applied ‘The Blood’ this morning around 9:30. I touched it up once at 1:30 after having a smoothie for lunch. This photo is right before I had dinner and 6 hours since the last touch up. I don’t have the luscious lips to show off a lipstick look but, I think I get a pin-up babe look with this color. I don’t smile with my mouth closed but it was the only way to make sure some of my lips would show.

Check out this swatch on my arm by the sunny window…

Yummy! I like this lipstick and shade very much. I didn’t get any bleeding or hardly any fade while wearing it. My lips didn’t feel dry either. And this lipstick works very well with any of the glosses I have. I will use ‘The Blood’ as my staple red lipstick.

Safia’s Lipstick Mixtapes are $12 each. Out of the 9 original shades, there are only 4 colors left. If you like ‘The Blood’, I recommend that you order yours pronto!

Color Memory: Battle Of The Gloss Shades

In college, I took an art appreciation class. Our instructor told us about how the brain perceives color and how our brain stores it. Since most people have an abstract memory, as opposed to those that have a photographic memory, we do not have good color memory. Then, I attended a makeup artistry class and again, I heard that the brain doesn’t have a good color memory. Most of us don’t recall a color’s true hue very well. Example: Have you ever purchased an article of clothing thinking it would go with something you already own? Then, when you get home it doesn’t work at all because the colors clash? That’s our brain not having precise color memory.

Gosh, that has happened to me many times. I do that a lot with blues. But, once I learned about cool, warm and neutral tones in colors, I got more hits than misses. Today, I have a miss to you show.

A new store in town has an elf makeup tower display. I only pushed one person out of the way to get to it, so I was fairly proud of my restraint. I got several items and one of them was this gloss…

This is called ‘Jeweled Jem’. Glitter overload to the max. Now, I’m sitting here at my desk with said gloss in my hand. Comparing the photo to the real thing doesn’t match up. This gloss is more purply. I still love it, but the photo is deceptive.

Then, at a later date, I saw a glitter gloss by LA Colors. I knew I had the elf gloss but couldn’t remember if it was more pink, more purple??? And since it was at the Dollar Tree, I was only going to be out a buck. Now, here’s the two side by side…

The top gloss is the LA Color one and I’m not finding a name on it. Do you see how my camera adjusted the elf to be more purple? And that is a LOT closer to what it is in real life. My point is, I thought they’d probably be close in shade. Maybe not glitter amount but I thought it was going to be a close dupe.

Here’s what happened when I swatched them…

LA Color on the top; elf on the bottom. Next trick; what you see in the bottle doesn’t always translate OUT of the bottle. In this case, it’s a tube. The LA Color is almost a peachy color and boy, is it light. Before I go on to show you the individual glosses, let me say, that if you want to make a match of color(s), whether it’s clothes, makeup, polish, shoes or redecorating your house…take the things you want to match with you, physically, and don’t rely on just your memory.

Since I purchased the elf gloss ‘Jewled Jem’ first, let me show you that one…

The applicator is a soft brush. It holds the gloss really well when you put on that first stroke. But, after that, I had to fish out more product as it didn’t adhere too well onto the brush after that. I stuck it into the tube and swirled it around hoping to scoop up more. That’s what did the trick. This isn’t unique, though. The gloss wasn’t runny but rather thick. That’s a good thing as the gloss stayed on my lips better and I got very nice coverage.

This is the LA Color doe-foot applicator…

Does this even look like the same gloss from the photos at the top? This is pink and I thought it was going to be a golden red, going by the color I see in the tube. This one was even tougher to get the gloss out. I had to remember not to bend the wand too far while swirling inside the tube. I’ve broken them off doing that in the past. And this was a very sheer gloss. Almost what a little girl could use because it isn’t much there. But, I do like it over lipsticks.

I will say that I am happy I got both. For a total of $4 I got a couple of fairly cool glosses. Both shades work on me and I didn’t get two of the same shade.

But even if my color memory was really good, I still couldn’t rely on it in this case, because what’s in the tube isn’t always what comes out. Moral of the story: Open up the makeup and test it out before you buy it.

Just kidding!!! What I recommend is purchase your beauty items at a store where you know they will refund your money if you don’t like it. Walgreens, Walmart, Bed, Bath and Beyond and CVS are good with this. Happy Matching!!
