January’s Toss or Trash Segment

I am challenging myself to finish more products this year and I have been doing, in my opinion, a grand job!

Here are my finishes for January, starting with the top of my head…

DSCF0032

Suave’s Moroccan conditioner for color treated hair. This one is a keeper just for the fragrance! This large bottle runs about $5. It doesn’t strip my hair color as fast as a regular conditioner for dry hair and I use the matching shampoo. I don’t have to be skimpy on using a lot of this conditioner since it is so inexpensive.

I keep at least 3 deodorants in rotation because, it seems, if I use just one all the time, I become resistant to its affects. Degree is one of my favorite brands as it works fairly hard…

DSCF0056 DSCF0057

Plus, I love the smell of lilacs. Not that I continually smell my pits after using this. Hee hee! This Degree line doesn’t leave white marks on my darker clothing so it’s a keeper too.

Boy, my poor hands have taken a beating this winter! Thank goodness I stock up on Silk Elements Shea Butter with Olive Oil Hand Cream when Sally’s has it on sale before Christmas…

DSCF0036

This is another product that I love the fragrance. I highly recommend this hand cream and it is my favorite. Extra points for it keeping my elbows soft too.

It seems that over the last 3 months my Toss or Trash segments have the running theme of moisturize. Lush’s Charity Pot lotion was highly recommended to me for being super humectant but, I allowed myself to get side-tracked while I was at the Lush store and got its predecessor, Formulae Known As…

DSCF0055

I did get a little sample of Charity Pot and in retrospect, I should have gone with that because it is must more moisturizing than Formulae Known As. I won’t be replacing this lotion but will be getting Charity Pot next time.

Another product that I never want to be without is Bath & Body Works’ Stress Relief body wash…

You won’t find me without the partnering lotion of this fragrance either. Not only does this body wash not dry my skin out but, it is like bathing in liquid Valium. Stress Relief has been a staple at the vanity before there even was a vanity!!! If fragrance has an effect on you, let this one melt away all your tension and let it flow right down the shower drain. This wash, along with the lotion, are easy to snag for around $5 on sale at B&BW throughout the year.

How have you been doing with finishing up products?

Toss or Trash: November 2014

I have been on a ‘use whatcha got’ kick rather than a ‘buy everything’ mode. Admittedly, there is a lot of satisfaction in this!

Some of my motivation has been finding a shampoo (and conditioner) that will give my hair moisture for at least two days. And, since my hair has been dry, it has also been breaking. So, between using ultra-moisturizing conditioners, I have been using Suave’s Natural Infusion Anti-Breakage Shampoo…

DSCF0003 DSCF0004

I bought the accompanying conditioner of this, as well, however, I use up conditioners much faster. While I didn’t get the max of 95% less breakage, I did see a reduction. And, while this shampoo does work, it didn’t seem to do much in the way of adding moisture to my locks. Once I get a better handle on my hair retaining moisture longer, I believe the breakage will cease.

Along with finding a shampoo and conditioner combo that moisturize, I have been refraining from using hair spray or, at least a spray that doesn’t dry my hair out. Since I am self-employed and work alone, sometimes I can go all day without even needed to wear makeup or go beyond a ponytail for a hairstyle. But, since I have been growing out my bangs, I have needed a touch of hairspray to keep my hair out of my eyes. I have been using Dove’s Style & Care Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray…

DSCF0011 DSCF0012

Even though this is the ‘extra strong’ strength, I didn’t find it to be so strong that it made my hair stiff or crunchy. There’s virtually no fragrance to this so for those that may be sensitive to fragrances, you might consider trying this one. I don’t know that I saw my hair having enhanced luminosity but, it didn’t dull my hair either. And, I didn’t find Style & Care to be overly-drying to my hair. On the other hand, I don’t think it added moisture either. I would repurchase this hair spray just because it didn’t out and out make my hair feel dried out.

One type of beauty product I don’t have lots of is mascara. Probably because I can be really fickle with all other types of beauty products but I stay close to a select three different mascaras. I was trying out Covergirl Lash Blast Luxe after reading positive reviews on it…

DSCF0005 DSCF0006 DSCF0008

While I did find the brush to work very well, the product itself, dried up quicker than my other mascaras. If you look closely, you can see that some of the spikes on the wand are not even coated with the product. I don’t feel that this tube lasted as long as most. However, there isn’t an easy way to find out if I even bought an old tube. It could have been on the shelf for a long time before I purchased it.

As I stated, I don’t switch mascara brands very often. However, if presented with the opportunity to try Lash Blast Luxe again, I would just because I did like how the wand performed.

Earlier this year, I was working as a merchandiser for Unilever and I received Degree Clinical Protection antiperspirant/deodorant at a regional meeting…

DSCF0065 DSCF0066 DSCF0067

The ‘Stress Control’ fragrance was one of the newer fragrances at the end of last year. I was excited to try this one. Even though the ‘clinical’ type of deodorants are more expensive and, there is less product in these compared to the regular stick deodorants, I found that the clinical protection truly does work better. They have twice the amount of active ingredient.

The last photo of the deodorant shows not only how the product is delivered but also, this is all used up. There isn’t any more product to dispense. Of course, I rotate about three deodorants at a time so, I didn’t get caught without any. However, do keep in mind that you can’t quite tell when this product is about to run out. I have replaced it because this is my current favorite deodorant.

How have you been doing with using up beauty products rather than making new purcases? What’s your favorite deodorant?

Toss Or Trash: September 2014 Part 2

This is Part 2 for September’s Toss or Trash segment. If you missed Part 1, click here.

This one could be subtitled ‘Suds and Soft’. All these items were purchased with the intention of cleaning and softening. Let’s check out how the items I tried held up.

DSCF0028

My shower doesn’t have a lot of room for products however, I do the best that I can. My husband only needs one corner, right? Ha! When I was working as a merchandiser, it was really easy to get swayed to try out products that I handled day after day. Suave’s Natural Infusion All Day Body Conditioner says that it rivals Pureology. If you check out the price of Pureology, you know that it is one of the higher priced hair care items at the drugstore. Suave has their prices at the other end of the spectrum. Even if the price was a bit higher, I would still use this Suave conditioner. It smells so nice and it made my hair super soft. I have dry hair and it is thin so, I can’t use a super heavy conditioner. I think this one got it just right for my hair needs.

DSCF0029 DSCF0030

I bought Caress’ Passionate Spell because I found some that had leaked all over in the store while I was merchandising. Since I was working for the company that makes Caress, it was my job to make the display look nice and presentable, I cleaned it up. Lucky me that it was body soap!! Passionate Spell has the fragrance of Passionfruit and Fiery Orange Rose. I don’t think I have ever smelled a fiery Orange Rose but I can tell you this; Passionate Spell is divine! I would definitely pick up this wash again. It cleans well without leaving my skin the least bit dry.

DSCF0031

To keep my skin soft, here are a couple of body butters I tried out…

DSCF0033

I’ll be honest with you; Pacifica is not a lotion you want to hoard. I really loved the smell of Indian Coconut Nectar, a lot. I guess since the bottle isn’t very big at 2.5 ounces, I wanted to stretch it out. Then, it got shoved to the back of the drawer. When I rediscovered it, the lotion had gone rancid and I had to throw it out with about a third still unused. What a loss! So, use my bad lotion management to your advantage. Do try this but, don’t expect it to last over a year. This body butter is ultra-moisturizing and the fragrance lingers…

DSCF0034

Lucky for me that the Crabtree & Evelyn body butter doesn’t spoil as fast. I know I’ve had this at least 2 years. Again, it got pushed to the side as newer products came to my vanity. Naturals Nourishing Body Butter is another lotion that is very thick and luxurious. The fragrance was nutty and soothing. You can just tell by the ingredients, all that nut butter is going to pamper your skin…

DSCF0035

Everything in this post is trash, which means, I used it up (well, except for the Pacifica) and I would buy it again. I learned my lesson, yet again, to work on using up what I currently have before moving on to something else. Yea….right. Like that’s gonna happen!!!!

Have you tried any of these products? What product have you hoarded only to have it spoil?

Toss or Trash: September, Part 1

I have learned, since becoming a beauty blogger, the true value of completely finishing a product. Goodness knows, I used to be a one-trick pony using only one shampoo until it was all gone. Never changing facial washes until the one I was currently using was used up. Now, I have no less than 4 shampoos in the shower and at least 3 conditioners going. So, when I finish up ANYTHING, it’s worthy of a post!

I have quite an assortment to show…

DSCF0034

From haircare to skincare, this Toss or Trash segment has a main theme of MOISTURIZE. Starting with the big ass can of hairspray…

DSCF0035

Tresemme’s most popular hairspray is the Extra Firm Control, all day humidity resistance. Does this one do the job? You bet! And this can lasted me for months. Not that I’m light on the spray, mind you. What I didn’t like was that this hairspray has dried out my already dry tresses. Even applying gently, at least in my mind, it has dried out my hair. I used it all up but, I will not be purchasing this one again. I need a hairspray that puts back in some moisture.

My skin is also dry and, getting drier by the minute. So, a moisturizing wash is a must…

DSCF0040 DSCF0041

I received this small bottle of Shea Terra Organics African Black Soap Body Wash in one of my monthly subscription boxes. I’m sorry that I don’t remember which one. This sample was Menthe or, had a peppermint oil in it. Fabulous! It wasn’t over the top peppermint like some body soaps can be. This was delicate and still refreshing. I liked the way this felt on my skin after a long morning run. I loved using it on my face as well as my body. I didn’t feel like my skin’s acid mantel was being stripped off with this wash. I felt super clean. This is one that I would replace.

After washing with Shea Terra, the next step is to dry off and moisturize my body…

DSCF0036 DSCF0037

The fragrance of Suave’s Moroccan Infusion body lotion is divine. My skin drank this up. I could tell it was doing my skin good because my normally, very dry elbows stayed smooth. I did feel that the staying power of the moisturizer wasn’t there all day, however. I have since gotten into the habit of reapplying a lotion before bedtime. So, I am rather surprised that with all the moisturizing properties listed in this lotion that it didn’t last the entire day. My skin didn’t seem any more radiant, either. For that reason, it’s trash and I won’t be replacing it.

I’m super fussy about getting moisture into my hair but I’m even more fanatic about it with my face. My age and the dry climate where I live are not doing me any favors!! The war is ON!!…

DSCF0038 DSCF0039

Kiehl’s is my saving grace. I’m SO happy I have discovered this brand. I received this eye cream at a store grand opening almost 2 years ago. Even though I have not used it regularly, as I test other eye creams out, this was my go-to when I wasn’t testing. I’d say it’s my staple. Rosa Arctica Eye Cream is thick enough that I instantly feel the moisturizing happening. However, it isn’t so heavy that it makes my foundation look off or clumpy. There isn’t really any smell to it but I can tell that it is a higher-end product by how well it performs. I am definitely replacing this.

What’s in your arsenal for keeping moisture in your hair and skin? Have you tried any of these products before?

Toss or Trash: Random Collections

During my move to another state, I have been actually saving my trash and toss items. And I have boxes of new products to review. However, along with moving there has been apartment hunting, starting a new job and just learning my way around. First order of business, after getting a new vehicle, was…where are the Walgreens, are there Ulta stores near by and, how do I get to Rite Aid?

Let me show you some of the bottom of the pan/can/bottle items…

toss or trash 011These are two new-to-me products. I wanted to test out something different than my usual fare. Suave is a product that I used in my early adult years. Mainly because it is inexpensive. However, this time I picked the ‘milk and honey splash’ for the aroma. It isn’t overwhelming; it’s a fresh, warm fragrance. And this wash didn’t dry out my skin. This is trash because I would use it again.

The Sauve Max Hold hairspray was another attempt at giving a new-to-me product a try. Again, I was quite happy with this hairspray. It didn’t have hardly any aroma, it didn’t make my hair feel dried out and, it did hold my hair in place. Mostly I spray my bangs and the wispies behind my ears. Sauve, again, is something I can recommend for those that, like me, have fine hair and want to keep it in place without a crunchy feel.

Here are a a couple of toss items and, one trash…

toss or trash 016On the far left is a Laura Geller clear lip gloss. It WAS clear. I like Laura Geller products very much. And even though this gloss was nice, it was not so stellar that it is something I can’t live without.

In the middle is another Laura Geller product that is used to make a shadow into a liner. I used this quite a bit. However, once it is used for one shade, it starts to contaminate the next shades I would pick. Laura Geller has another product similar to this that is in a small squeeze bottle and does the job in a way that there is no contamination between uses. I will deem this a toss because I wouldn’t repurchase it.

toss or trash 017

Last is ‘Degree: Sheer Powder’ antiperspirant and deodorant. As a faithful reader, you know that deodorant is something that I’m so fickle about. I never get the same brand or fragrance twice. However, I can say that I like this Degree and the fragrance was light and powdery; just as it is named. I didn’t have any staining or marks on my clothing from using this product. It did its job and I can recommend it.

toss or trash 018

With the exception of the Laura Geller products, you can find the other items at most drug and mass retail stores. Laura Geller has been selling her products for over a year at Ulta and I’m happy to see that she has made them easier to purchase by doing so. The two products of hers that I have reviewed, I purchased from QVC.

Have you tried any of these products?
