elf: Disney Princess Belle Eye Shadow Palette

A couple of months ago, Walgreen’s presented more Disney princess makeup and accessories. I have continued to collect the makeup story books and, purchasing this one was a given, as well…

belle palette 1

This palette is by elf and it celebrates Belle from the Beauty and the Beast movie.

This is quite the neutral palette. But, there are enough shades to create a light, neutral look all the way into a smoldering, smoky eye…

belle palette 3

I think swatching makeup is the thing I love most about blogging…

belle palette 6

I did use a swab for the swatching over a light application of eye shadow primer. I found all the shadows to really ‘pop’ with the primer. This palette is from elf so, there is a bit of fall-out but, they didn’t crumble away and, the pay out makes it worthwhile. In my opinion!

You can’t get more simple with these directions…

belle palette 2

For days when I want a close to no makeup look, these are some of the best colors to use…

If I remember correctly, I got this for around $5. What do you think? Are these not great Summer to Fall transition shades?

Mask Monday: Studio 35 Beauty Warming Mask

This Mask Monday edition hosts a warming mask from Studio 35 Beauty, Walgreen’s own beauty line…

DSCF0082

I picked this one up when Walgreen’s had them on sale for about $2.50. They usually run around $3.50.

Walgreen’s has a 100% satisfaction guarantee on their home brand products. That’s a great reason for me to recommend these to you. If you don’t dig it, take it back. It was interesting to see that after all the Baroness paper masks I have been reviewing that even this one is from Korea, as well…

DSCF0085

The Studio 35 Beauty mask is a liquid mask, however. It’s a semi-thick cream that has an off-orange color to it…

DSCF0087

When I squeezed out the entire package to apply to my face, most of the cream was the opaque cream rather than the clear liquid. I made sure to emulsify the rest of the cream in the envelope in case it all needed to blend together to create the warming effect.

And, mentioned the warming effect, it is slight yet, still noticeable. But, only upon application. I didn’t really feel the warmth after 3 minutes of applying it.

The fragrance is very light. I was expecting it to have more of a citrus odor to it but it wasn’t even leaning towards an orange smell. I found it to be pleasant and didn’t interfere one bit with the great experience of using the warming mask.

Although the instructions state to leave the mask on until it dries, I found it didn’t completely dry on me. It did get slightly tacky but, it didn’t become dry or tight…

DSCF0084

The exfoliating part is very subtle. I can’t say I noticed it at all. I just trust that the mask was breaking down the dirt and dead skin layer and was washed away when I was finished. It wasn’t on purpose but, some of the mask got on my lips. It actually felt nice and so I left it on. There wasn’t any itchy, burning or otherwise unpleasant sensation so I went with it.

The list of ingredients are as follows…

DSCF0083

Along with a very long list of herbal and natural extracts are some chemical components I wasn’t familiar with. I picked one to research as I love to learn about these things.

The fifth listed ingredient is Sodium Silcoaluminate. Just on a guess, I figured it was some sort of salt, silicon and aluminum mixture. What I discovered is that it is a rather common ingredient used in eye shadows, mascaras and foundations. It has a very slight SPF but nothing worth touting about. It does have some anti-aging benefits and can be found in those types of products as well. You can also find Sodium Silcoaluminate in laundry detergent and Biscuits. Why, may you ask, would this ingredient be in those items? It is also an anti-caking agent, and is often used as a food additive. It is abrasive and helps increase the volume in items. Quite commonly known as a bulking ingredient.

As I concluded by the name, it is made up of sodium, aluminum and silicate. There is no known toxicity to the environment or to humans. This ingredient isn’t a known allergen and isn’t known to interfere with the human immune system.

After researching Sodium Silcoaluminate, better than 20 minutes had passed. (I had the mask on while I did the research.) I checked and found the mask, as I mentioned, to be tacky but not drying. I must mention that there is more than enough product for my face and my neck so, I got the idea to use it on the back of my hands as well. I washed it all off with a warm wash cloth. The mask washed off very easily. After I pat-dried my skin, it felt squeaky clean. Not extra soft but I wasn’t expecting that. My skin was very clean-feeling. And, I’m quite happy with that. It was prepped and ready for my regular skin routine.

Walgreen’s warming mask is one that I feel I could recommend to all skin types. Unless you see something in particular that you know you are allergic to from the ingredient list, I think it would be OK for those with sensitive skin.

Have you tried any of Walgreen’s Studio 35 Beauty items?

Facial Wipe Wednesday: Dickinson’s Refreshingly Clean Cleansing Cloths

This installment of Facial Wipe Wednesday spotlights Dickinson’s Refreshingly Clean Cleansing Cloths…

dickson wipes 3 dickson wipes 2

I have read that witch hazel is better for the skin than rubbing alcohol. I wouldn’t use straight rubbing alcohol on my skin, much less my face. Yet, witch hazel as a long history as being very good to the skin.

This is a list of what witch hazel can do for the skin, taken directly from the Dickinson’s website:

Cosmetic Benefits:

  • Excellent for sensitive skin
  • Removes excess oil and sebum
  • Controls oil production
  • Reduces skin blemishes
  • Cleanses and conditions skin
  • Tones and tightens pores
  • Soothes redness
  • Refreshes and cools skin
  • Does not over dry
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Dermatologist tested

In an effort to expand the variety of wipes to review, I was very much looking forward to testing these wipes. Of course, to my chagrin, this package has 25 wipes rather than 30. But, after using these wipes, I can almost totally forgive that faux pas.

The packaging states that it can do quite a bit…

dickson wipes 4

And, I found all of these to be true. Only mascara was a bit stubborn to remove. I did need to go over my lashes several times to get all the flakes off. The wipes were very moist and yes, it actually did feel refreshing to use. I can see how this product would be soothing to puffy skin, especially to the under eye area.

In the several years that I have been doing these wipe reviews, I think this is the shortest list of ingredients I have yet to see…

dickson wipes 5

Two more pluses for Dickinson’s are that they are made in the US and, they do not test on animals. You’ll notice that this product still has alcohol in it. This is used to help the product dissolve the dirt and activate the witch hazel. I didn’t find that it dried my skin out but, I always follow up with a moisturizer regardless.

I was completely impressed with the size of the wipes…

dickson wipes 7

I had to pull the wipe down to my wrist to show the complete, full size of it. This size was plenty to cleanse my entire face and eye area. And, right from the beginning, Dickinson’s Cleansing Cloths were very moist, just how I like it.

I liked that the wipe had a texture to it…

dickson wipes 8

This is the first time I have ever used a witch hazel product. I was concerned it would be too drying for my skin. But, my concern was unfounded even with my slightly dry skin. These cleansing clothes sell for around $7 at Walgreen’s. I know I picked mine up on sale, however I don’t recall what I paid for them.

For those with sensitive skin, their website claims that these are good for even the most sensitive. I think that’s pretty bold yet, with the short list of ingredients, it would seem there is less of a chance for disrupting the skin.

If you happen to visit their website, you’ll find it full of information on witch hazel. If you are considering using these wipes, which I can easily recommend, you’ll discover quite a bit there.

Have you ever used witch hazel?

Elsa’s Snow and Ice Beauty Book

When I saw the exclusive Frozen-themed items at Walgreen’s, I purchased the elf nine shadow palette, which I reviewed here, and I also purchased the Beauty Book too…

DSCF0009

I must admit, I have not seen the movie, as I am not a fan of cartoon movies nor musicals. However, it’s easy to say that I love the color-scheme and the makeup that this collection has.

The beauty book is just like the other elf books that have come before…

DSCF0011 DSCF0010

Along with a mirror, there is a two-look tutorial underneath that…

DSCF0037 DSCF0036

With a shadow brush and eight shadows, there is a face highlighter, two eyeliner pencils and a lip gloss…

DSCF0015

The brush isn’t my favorite but, it can get the job done. I like to use it if I’m just going to wear one or two shadows. For a more intense look, I use other higher-end brushes for precision application and better blending.

The shadows are neither chalky nor crumbly. I found them to blend amazingly well and the colors tie into each other nicely…

DSCF0016

Elsa Book Swatches

The eye pencils are both black. However, one is a flat black and the other has silver sparkles. I found that once I had them on, I couldn’t much tell the difference…

DSCF0018

The lip gloss is the scene-stealer of the book. It is highly-pigmented, not a bit tacky and it is super bold…

Elsa Lip Gloss

I didn’t use a primer with any of these swatches. I would, however, recommend using a lip liner with this gloss as it migrated on me rather quickly. I feel a liner would have corralled it and kept it from bleeding.

The highlighter was adorable with its embossing…

DSCF0013

However, it is just an overspray. This is what happened when I swatched it…

DSCF0017

Nevertheless, for my fair complexion, this highlighter looked nice applied to the top of the apples of my cheeks. I don’t do highlighters much but, with a light application, this one didn’t make me look overly made-up or shiny.

Overall, I find this elf beauty book to be absolutely adorable. For a makeup junkie, I think it’s fun and I can easily recommend it for any age.

Have you spotted the Frozen movie products in your Walgreen’s? Which ones did you get?

Jordana’s Modern Matte Lipsticks

There has been a lot of talk about Jordana’s new Modern Matte lipsticks. I knew from the first post I read about them at Nouveau Cheap’s blog, that I would be getting some of them. And, here are the three I picked up…

swatches videos pretty please 021 swatches videos pretty please 022

I found the display at Walgreen’s and went for a magenta, red and a mauve. None of them have disappointed me, in the least.

The colors are very pigmented and, with the use of a liner and lip primer, the wear is super long! I was also delighted that these matte lipsticks did not dry out my lips. There’s just a bit of a creamy feel to them…

swatches videos pretty please 023 swatches videos pretty please 026 swatches videos pretty please 030

With a dozen different shades to pick from, I love these three and have been wearing one or the other every day. Even on days where I don’t do full makeup, just a matte lipstick can give my naked face some ‘oomph’.  I picked mine up for about $2.50.

With my lip swatches, I didn’t use any primer or liner, just pure Jordana Modern Matte lipstick…

Wet ‘n Wild: Silver Lake Eye Shadow Collection

Wet ‘n Wild slipped in under my radar with the new, limited edition Silver Lake collection. I strolled into one of my local Walgreen’s and found this surprise…

Hipster WnW Collection at Wags

I picked up all five of them before I realized I didn’t take a photo! So, I placed them back, snapped a photo and reclaimed my good fortune!

There wasn’t even the slightest bit of hesitation in acquiring all five of these colorful 6-pan palettes…

Hipster WnW collection

As usual, I use a Q-tip to swatch the shadows on my forearm. I have done it over a shadow primer, as well…

Thrift Store Collage 2 Embrace Collage California Roll Collage Vinyl Collage Vegan Collage

Most of these shadows are shimmery. There are a few mattes that are sublime. In Thrift Store Chic, the middle right side is a semi-matte light peach. In Embrace Obscurity, there are two mattes and they are the two middle shadows. California Roll has two mattes, as well, which are the right side shadows in the middle and bottom row. Vinyl Collection has one matte that is in the upper left-hand corner.

There is a slight over-spray of sparkle on some of these shadows and, if you look closely, you can tell which ones they are. (Curses to you, Wet ‘n Wild, for trying to trick us!) Even still, once past the over-spray, the colors are gorgeous and rich. I found Thrift Store Chic to be the lightest in coverage however, I was still able to achieve a bright and vivid eye look with this palette. As usual, there are several shadows that have some fall-out but, I’m able to flick those crumblies away with a whisky makeup brush.

I picked up the Silver Lake collection at Walgreens and I didn’t even bother to wait for a BOGO 1/2 off sale, which they have quite often. There was no way I wanted to miss out on these. Oftentimes, Spring collections are soft pastels which make me look very washed-out. So, you can imagine my joy seeing that Wet ‘n Wild not only surprising me with this collection but also with bold and vivid colors.

Have you found this collection yet?

Walgreen’s Studio 35 Beauty Warming Facial Mask

Even though we have had plenty of snow, here in Colorado, I’m still playing the moisture ‘catch-up’ game with my skin. I know this is just how it will be as I age. But, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to give up the fight! I’m more diligent than ever, especially during the Winter.

I have been searching out masks that help moisturize my skin while exfoliating the dead cells. Creating that turnover of skin cells is vital to keeping lines and wrinkles away as well as keeping my skin glowing.

Studio 35 Beauty is Walgreens line of beauty products. I found this Warming Mask and wanted to give it a go…

IMG_1924

This season, I have been cold! So what better way to warm up than with putting on a warming mask. However, I have to say, I’m very disappointed that I didn’t feel any warming sensation with Studio 35 Beauty’s mask. All is not lost, though. It still left my skin feeling soft and moist.

Here are a list of the ingredients…

IMG_1927

Again, I find that I have gravitated to another product that has orange and/or Vitamin C in it. Vitamin C has been quite the buzz for skin care for several years. I don’t see it slacking. I wasn’t expecting to see so many other natural ingredients in this mask but gosh, there are lots of them!!!

And, if I didn’t feel satisfied with the results, Walgreens was giving me a 100% guarantee…

IMG_1926

For just a couple of dollars, I felt I was going to be OK. And, I was! This mask was very refreshing. Since it was a gel mask, it didn’t get hard or draw in on my skin like clay masks do. I left it on for 10 minutes before rinsing it away. I actually set my timer app and go relax on my bed when I do a mask. I take advantage of having the luxury of being able to make it a spa-like treatment.

The product had a slight tint to it, the first time I used it and, just the slightest bit of a fragrance…

IMG_1928

I put on a little at a time as this gel was rather runny. And, I was able to get two treatments out of this one envelope…

IMG_1929

One thing that I didn’t think of was to squeeze the envelope and churn up the contents before opening it and applying it. The second time I used this mask, it wasn’t clear like the first usage. This could have had something to do with why I never felt any warming sensation.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the process and after washing the mask off, my skin felt extremely smooth and moisturized. I followed up with my regular night time skin care and noticed how smooth my skin felt.

I bought this mask for $1.75 last month. I don’t know if they are discontinuing it and, I hope not because I would certainly purchase this warming mask again.

Have you tried a warming mask?

Holiday 2014 Wet N Wild Fergie Beauty University Palette

I purchased the new Wet N Wild Fergie Beauty University palette, a Walgreen’s exclusive last week. Since I liked the one that came out last year so much, and this year’s had more shadows and lip glosses, I thought for sure this was going to be a winner. Last year’s palette was $20. This year’s is $30…

DSCF0032 DSCF0033 DSCF0034

First off, the footprint of this palette is larger than last years. In fact, I found it not only oddly-shaped but also, it was rather difficult to open up the first time…

DSCF0035 DSCF0036

It was difficult getting the top open. The entire box feels cheaply made and I was considered I was going to break it before I even managed to get it open…

DSCF0037

Next, the sides pull out to reveal the lip glosses and glitters…

DSCF0043

DSCF0042

I felt that the gray/black shadows had very little variance. Usually, when they are sitting in the pan right next to each other, you can see a color difference. But, I couldn’t and in the swatches, there’s none whatsoever…

DSCF0050

DSCF0051

It looks like only four, maybe five, different color swatches but this is the entire bottom row of shadows.

I did random swatches and felt that most were fairly well pigmented, but most of them were super crumbly and it seemed like a lot of waste was being created. I swatched a few of the glitters and as with most Wet ‘n Wild cream shadows, or lip glosses if I were to use them for that, are practically impossible to apply…

DSCF0054 DSCF0053

After the shadow swatches, I did some gloss swatching. I found that all but a few were super sheer and these wouldn’t have put a lot of pigment on my lips. Several of them are colorless even on my fair skin…

DSCF0060

The most disappointing thing I ran across was that just after dabbing my lip brush twice into the glosses, I was hitting pan. So one, these pans didn’t have a lot of product and two, the glosses were so runny that I knew they wouldn’t stay on my lips but for only a short time before migrating either completely off my lips or, on my face around my mouth…

DSCF0058

And while the color range is pretty and there are a lot of choices…

DSCF0049 DSCF0048 DSCF0047 DSCF0046 DSCF0042 DSCF0039 DSCF0038

The quality is not worth it in my opinion. For $30, I can go get a better quality palette, albeit with less number of shadows, at Ulta or a department store, for close to the same amount or, for just a few more dollars. In fact, I’d recommend the Profusion or L.A. Color palettes I have previously reviewed over this one.  I know I wouldn’t face the profound disappointment I have with this year’s Wet ‘n Wild Fergie Holiday palette.

Have you seen this display up at your local Walgreens? Have you or, do you plan on purchasing this?

Walgreens: It’s Time To LOOK UP!!!

Every year at this time, I eagerly await to show you the beginnings of Walgreen’s gift boxes. The high up shelves have been in place for about 2 or so week, so I knew the products were on the way. I saw this yesterday at one of my local Walgreen’s…

Walgreens holiday look up

I figure if you read beauty blogs, you want to know what is coming up! How about more elf beauty books!…

elf beauty book Walgreens

These must be a hit since they had so many out this year. I’m a collector! These two will be coming home with me and going to my elf beauty book shelf.

The Color Workshop has collections that have a bit of everything in them. I was impressed with the shadow color choices available…

Color Workshop Walgreen kits

And elf has several $3 gift boxes which I think make excellent add-ons to Secret Santa gifts or just as stocking stuffers…

Walgreens elf sets

This Wet ‘n Wild Fergie collection endcap subtly hints at being for the Holidays but it doesn’t have any holiday designs on it. Either way, I’m reading several reviews on these items and, will be getting that huge makeup box very soon. Last year, I didn’t wait and bought the makeup box at full price only a couple of weeks later to have to go to half price. So, I’m going to hold out…just a bit…not much longer! I did purchase the elf beauty books that you see at the base of this display and will be reviewing those here soon…

wnw holiday sets

Is anyone else collecting the elf beauty books? I’ve bought one Christmas gift, so far? How are you coming along?

Laissez Faire: A Christmas Palette For Fun

I guess I got a lot on clearance from Walgreens after Christmas because I’m still photographing and playing with items I have in the ‘need to review’ box. Yet, even though I have a lot in there, I didn’t pay much at all. Seriously! Look at this cute Profusion palette that was $5 at regular price and I got it for $2.50!…

DSCF0075

Gosh, I’m hypnotized by the case’s pattern…

DSCF0092

There is quite a bit going on inside the case…

DSCF0076 DSCF0078

And that is just the top case! Look what is in the second side…

DSCF0079

Let me start with the second side. The neutrals here are very, very soft…

DSCF0081 DSCF0080

When you look at my swatches, I used my usual Q-tip swab swatching and I scrubbed! I picked three shades to swatch and you can barely see the color on the very far left…

DSCF0089

The far right swatch is the pink blush, the one at the top…

DSCF0082

This is just fine if you want a very subtle look. Of course, a decent brush picks up, and transfers, the powder a bit better. Oh, and the lippies are glosses. When I placed my lip brush into them, it sunk right down to the bottom of the pan. They are so creamy I do not know how they keep from dripping out of the palette. So, naturally, they don’t last but a brief moment on the lips. As pretty as the lip shades are, they have no lasting power at all. The blushes, however, build so nicely and I love both shades.

Here’s a snapshot of the top palette right after I swiped my Q-tip swab on some of the shadows to swatch…

DSCF0084

Whoa! Super-ultra powdery!! But, look at the payout…

DSCF0086

No scrubbing required! I loved the way these all blended together and I didn’t mind the fallout because they applied so creamy and dreamy.

For $2.50, I am very happy. The colors blend, albeit with fallout from the top palette, yet not a crumb from the bottom palette. The two blushes are perfect, either together or on their own. The lip glosses are fun to play with but they don’t last but an hour, if that. This is the type of palette I’d take on a road trip because I would be able to make a lot of different eye looks with it but also, if it got lost, it wouldn’t break my heart a lot.

I am usually closely supervised when doing photographs. My big bear, Sebastian, just hangs out in the laid back mood…

DSCF0094

Can you be so laissez faire about a cheap palette?
