A Very Cheap Clearance Eye Shadow Purchase Turns Out Well

Not all of the after-Christmas clearance beauty items I purchased were terrible. Here’s one that was 50 cents and it is awesome….

This would be a deal even for the full $1 price. I got this at Walgreens. Simply called ‘Twinkle Twinkle’, the five colors look playful and fun. The big squares look to be very pigmented and, they actually were!…

I was holding myself back on getting too hopeful about the color payoff until I swatched. Here’s what I got…

This palette was best used with a shadow primer for longevity. The first time I did an eye look, I didn’t use a primer. I got giddy when that yellow swatched so boldly and I was raring to try it out. There was some fall-out with the yellow and the baby blue shade but not so much that it was a deal-breaker. The second time I did an eye-look for the day, I used NYX’s HD Eye Primer and these shadows came on bold with lots of staying power.

Not bad at all for 50 cents! There were, originally, 3 other palettes but this was the only one I found left on clearance. Would you have gambled a mere 50 cents on it?

Wet ‘n Wild Holiday Glitter Cream Shadows

Are you a magpie? I’m a magpie. So, what is a magpie? It’s a bird that is attracted to shiny objects. They like to take it and put it in their nests. If you didn’t know you were a magpie, then you now know!

But, I’m a magpie that does NOT like to be duped. Wet ‘n Wild, you duped me…again…on your cream shadows. Why you torture me so?…

DSCF0028I don’t know how many new Holiday Wet ‘n Wild cream shadows I saw out at Walgreens last week. I didn’t bother to count. I just picked one that I thought was the prettiest of all. I knew the formula hadn’t changed. If it had, I would have read all the hallelujahs from other beauty blogs. What few mentions I found of these are the same that you are going to read here…

DSCF0029‘Glimmer in Your Eye’ is soooo pretty. Damn, I wanted it to really, really work. Check out my macro…

DSCF0031Yes! They are just that glittery to catch my magpie eye. Then came the swatching…

DSCF0037 DSCF0036Nope. Not even a good angle makes up for this. It was totally downhill from then on. I use swabs to swatch and that sucked too…

DSCF0035The cream wouldn’t even stick to the swab. I used my finger to swipe…

DSCF0032That didn’t make a bit of difference. Grrrr….this makes me mad! And I can’t even get the cream to stay on an eyeliner brush to enhance a pencil or gel eyeliner look.

Sadly, I say don’t waste your money. These take too much work even if you try glitter glue for the eyelids. That made even heavier patches of product on my eye. It looked like I fell into some sort of kid’s glitter project.

Buy them if you must because the magpie in you wants the shiny. But, you will probably leave the shiny in the pan which is the only place it looks pretty.

If you were able to get these creams to adhere to your eyelid, please, I BEG you….share!!!!

Gifts From Heaven Above; Walgreen’s Top Shelf Shopping

The season has come for the ‘Look Up’ shopping. What is this, you say? Retail stores receive a mess-load of Christmas products. It will fill up their backroom in an over-consumption minute. What Walgreens is known to do is put out the Holiday gift sets on the higher shelves, above the head, in preparation to move them down to the shoppable levels. But, if it is out on the floor, you can still buy it! I shared some of my Walgreens findings with G. at Nouveau Cheap‘s blog. She’s my source for all things new at the drugstore.

This is one of the first items I purchased…

swatches galore 014Look! One Buck!! Profusion comes out with a variety palettes during the Holiday. I find them hit or miss as far as quality. It’s a small gamble to find out if the shadows are too hard, too powdery or just right. Many one of the shadows is unblendable. Sometimes the entire palette isn’t worth your time. Yet, this one was a dollar. I lose that much in my car seat! So, this splurge is hardly a dent.

If I remember correctly, there were 6 different palettes to pick from. I got the purples…

I can sit and stare at color palettes all day. Even when I was a kid, I had to have all my crayons in rainbow order and I wouldn’t use them. I didn’t want to spoil them so I would ask a classmate if I could borrow theirs. I don’t know if anyone ever caught on to my scheme. A bit of my reason to blog is to not only capture the virgin moment of makeup but also, to get me to make that first step in using it by swatching.

Anyway, are not these shades pretty? Nothing new but still pretty. Here are the sacred swatches from my first 2013 Holiday palette…

swatches galore 027I used a swab to swatch. And these were velvety smooth. I found them easy to blend with my makeup brushes. A bit of fallout but I really loaded up the swab for a swatching. They do build to a super pigmentation over a shadow primer.

Cheaper than a couple of bananas, you won’t be doing the peel slip by inventing in at least one of Profusion’s palettes. And for a buck, these can make nice Secret Santa or stocking stuffer gifts.

Do you treat yourself to these little, baby splurges? Do you think I’ll end up with some other palettes this Holiday?

We Got GOSH, By Gosh!

My vocabulary has been forever altered by becoming a beauty blogger. First, I was a noob (a person new to the field; newby). Then I started to get lemmings (something new that everyone wants and then I do to; refers to lemmings who all follow each other in jumping off a cliff; goes against mothers that tell their children ‘if their friends jumped off a bridge, would you?’)

Over the past 2-1/2 years of blogging, I found that I get lemmings for things that are harder to find, rather than the mundane. I think that is part of the allure. Thus, enters the cosmetic company, Gosh. Gosh is from Denmark and that is just about as far away as I can imagine. Then, I discovered that Gosh products could be found in Canada. And, if you had a buddy that lived there and could throw a lot of money into it, you could get some sent to you. I didn’t want to impose on any of my Canadian friends so I just left it at that.

Then there started to be some rumors on the beauty blogs that Gosh cosmetics were in the States. And….that they were at Walgreens! Walgreens??!!! Why there are only 50 of them here in Orlando, surely one of them would get it!

Shortly after reading this my friend, Phyrra, posted on her blog that she had found them at a Walgreens in Tampa. Now, my quest began!

This week, I checked out 3 different Walgreens. None of them had it or, even knew what it was. One Walgreens cosmetic person took the time to lecture me about the divisions of Walgreens districts in the city and why I wouldn’t find this product. She also said that since she had never heard of it, and she reads ALL of her Walgreens emails, that it must be either a mistake I had made or, that it was something the store manager put in the store. I became a Grumpy Cat by her condescending attitude. I promptly left.

Today, I stopped into another Walgreens. Not only was the cosmetic person excited about Gosh products coming, even though she had never heard of them, she was going to help me find out which store had it! She even got the store manager over to help tell me where this newly-renovated Walgreens was and they had just had a Re-Grand Opening. It was a wonderful experience!

I dashed over to the Walgreens that is in Winter Park. It’s in a very rich (old money) and liberal college area, so there is a lot going on in this part of the city. I was so hopeful when I pulled into the parking lot. And when I stepped into this new type of Walgreens, I was transported to a different shopping experience…

It was hard for me to stay focused because there was tons of shinies (things that are sparkly and shine and fascinate the eye; cause to distract you from normal life). The shelves were lit up. The aisles were wide. There was a liquor store attached next door. (Yes, even booze can become a shiny.)

They even have some grab-n-go food like convenient stores…

Then, right on an endcap, as I suspected, I found the Holy Grail (cue the singing angels music)…

Many of the testers were in the wrong place and my merchandiser instinct kicked in as I scanned the display for my booty (hey, that’s what a pirate’s reward, or gold, is!) I must have been rabid about putting everything in order because two people came up to me and asked me a question where something was located. Whenever I’m in a store, people are ALWAYS assuming I work there! I’m getting more than a little peeved about it too. (More Grumpy Cat).

The prices of Gosh cosmetics were higher than I thought they would be. I knew they’d be more than my beloved Wet ‘n Wild and a wee bit more than my coveted Milani. But I left the store dropping $85, which was also due in part to getting a Vichy skincare product (to be reviewed under a sample post in the future). And I wasn’t even close to being wow-ed by the nail polish. For me, it was the liners. Lip liners and eyeliners. They all were testing grandly on the back of my hand!

Here’s what I came away with…

And, I will be doing a full review of them very soon. In the meantime, here are a couple of new skincare lines that I found at this Walgreens store…

Actually, Le Coevent Des Minimes isn’t new to me. I used to get it at TJ Maxx. But I only got the hand and body lotions.

One more…

Nuxe, totally new to me and, worth my investigation. However, that dry oil for the body…$85!!

And, my final new vocabulary word: awesomebalz!! That’s the updated version of YIPPEE!!!

More Photos on the Sinful Colors Makeup Display

A couple of days ago, I posted about Sinful Colors spreading their wings into cosmetics. Here are more photos of the sidekick display found at Walgreens…

Note how on the third shelf the pots of loose glitter are turned the wrong way. Before I left, I had them turned correctly. It’s hard, for me as a professional merchandiser, not to merchandise other people’s products. What a perfect job for someone that likes things orderly.

Seriously, my phone camera takes better photos than these. I was being paranoid about taking these photos. And normally, I’m not. However, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to share these with my readers.

Anyone try those shadows out?

Sinful Colors Moving Beyond Just Nail Polishes

As I was looking for things to buy (scratch that!) review, I spotted an endcap at Walgreens full of Sinful Colors cosmetics. That’s right: makeup!…

This pre-filled endcap had the regular and nail art polishes in it and the new lip glosses. But to see shadow palettes?!!!

And there were several shades of loose glitters too…

Oh, did I mention that at least this one is HOLO!!!!

How about metallic eyeliners…

I came home with only 2 polishes that I haven’t seen before…I think. I got ‘Faceted’ and ‘Ice Dream’. Swatches will be coming up very soon.

Have you seen this display in Walgreens?
