Toss or Trash: November 2014

I have been on a ‘use whatcha got’ kick rather than a ‘buy everything’ mode. Admittedly, there is a lot of satisfaction in this!

Some of my motivation has been finding a shampoo (and conditioner) that will give my hair moisture for at least two days. And, since my hair has been dry, it has also been breaking. So, between using ultra-moisturizing conditioners, I have been using Suave’s Natural Infusion Anti-Breakage Shampoo…

I bought the accompanying conditioner of this, as well, however, I use up conditioners much faster. While I didn’t get the max of 95% less breakage, I did see a reduction. And, while this shampoo does work, it didn’t seem to do much in the way of adding moisture to my locks. Once I get a better handle on my hair retaining moisture longer, I believe the breakage will cease.

Along with finding a shampoo and conditioner combo that moisturize, I have been refraining from using hair spray or, at least a spray that doesn’t dry my hair out. Since I am self-employed and work alone, sometimes I can go all day without even needed to wear makeup or go beyond a ponytail for a hairstyle. But, since I have been growing out my bangs, I have needed a touch of hairspray to keep my hair out of my eyes. I have been using Dove’s Style & Care Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray…

Even though this is the ‘extra strong’ strength, I didn’t find it to be so strong that it made my hair stiff or crunchy. There’s virtually no fragrance to this so for those that may be sensitive to fragrances, you might consider trying this one. I don’t know that I saw my hair having enhanced luminosity but, it didn’t dull my hair either. And, I didn’t find Style & Care to be overly-drying to my hair. On the other hand, I don’t think it added moisture either. I would repurchase this hair spray just because it didn’t out and out make my hair feel dried out.

One type of beauty product I don’t have lots of is mascara. Probably because I can be really fickle with all other types of beauty products but I stay close to a select three different mascaras. I was trying out Covergirl Lash Blast Luxe after reading positive reviews on it…

While I did find the brush to work very well, the product itself, dried up quicker than my other mascaras. If you look closely, you can see that some of the spikes on the wand are not even coated with the product. I don’t feel that this tube lasted as long as most. However, there isn’t an easy way to find out if I even bought an old tube. It could have been on the shelf for a long time before I purchased it.

As I stated, I don’t switch mascara brands very often. However, if presented with the opportunity to try Lash Blast Luxe again, I would just because I did like how the wand performed.

Earlier this year, I was working as a merchandiser for Unilever and I received Degree Clinical Protection antiperspirant/deodorant at a regional meeting…

The ‘Stress Control’ fragrance was one of the newer fragrances at the end of last year. I was excited to try this one. Even though the ‘clinical’ type of deodorants are more expensive and, there is less product in these compared to the regular stick deodorants, I found that the clinical protection truly does work better. They have twice the amount of active ingredient.

The last photo of the deodorant shows not only how the product is delivered but also, this is all used up. There isn’t any more product to dispense. Of course, I rotate about three deodorants at a time so, I didn’t get caught without any. However, do keep in mind that you can’t quite tell when this product is about to run out. I have replaced it because this is my current favorite deodorant.

How have you been doing with using up beauty products rather than making new purcases? What’s your favorite deodorant?

  • Allison @neversaydiebeauty

I use up everything before I buy new stuff. Very frugal that way so I can splurge on stuff I really like. I’m a bit surprised that your Lash Blast dried up so fast. I have the basic green one, and it has lasted forever…though I’m not so impressed with the volume it provides.

    • I down-sized a lot when we moved almost 2 years ago so I don’t have a lot of room for excess. That may be part of why I am working on getting rid of so much.

  • Aleya Bamdad

I get such a great feeling when i’ve actually finished a product! Love this post!

  • I agree with you, clinical strength anti-perspirant seems to work better

    • However, my deodorant needs have changed greatly since moving to Colorado! 😉

  • I wish I could use stuff up before I buy new stuff.. I am the ultimate consumer! I do like clinical strength deodorants, though, and am using the lavender Secret one now.

    • Ohhhh, and I like lavender too!

  • I’m with Nidia.. I rarely use up anything before I purchase. I’m a crazy beauty hoarder

    • Having a family member who is one of those hoarders like you see on TV has made me more diligent about my tendencies. :/

  • erikatheicyone

I use up some things, keeping a very tight rotation and others… Well… Yeah. I am definitely a mascara slut. I try a new one, fall in love with it, think I’ll love it forever, try a new one and the cycle continues. I guess I’m making up for the years and years I used the same brand, faithfully. Now I want to try #allthemascaras

    • I used the same brand(s) faithfully before becoming a blogger too. I do like the experimentation of it all, now.

  • I am not good at using old products to prevent myself from buying new ones! I just can’t stop!

    • With so many things to choose from, it’s hard!

  • I try my hardest to finish a product before buying new… sometimes it works haha!

    • I don’t know why I’m better at using up some types of products and not others. Don’t even get me started on all the teas I have!!! My pantry is a mini-Teavana!

  • cindyprimebeauty

I need to get on the use-it-up wagon!

    • Part of why I created my Toss or Trash series was to encourage myself to use things up and, toss products that I just don’t like even though I haven’t used them up.

  • I NEVER use anything up. I am terrible at that!

    • I bet you have tons of products too!

  • Justina

I rarely use anything up but I used up a body scrub and two body washes this week. I was so proud!

    • I’d say you are a success!!!!

  • I really like Suave’s hair products. Effective and affordable, that’s my motto!

    • They have expanded so much in the past few years. I can’t hardly keep up.

  • FabZilla_Kath

Except for shampoo, conditioner and body wash, I rarely finish a product so kudos to you

    • Doing this series has helped me out. I needed motivation to down-size.

  • I have definitely improved in the “use it up” arena – a challenge for a beauty blogger!

  • I need to make 2015 my year to use shhhh!+ up. It’s crazy up in here.

    • Ohhh, I’d love to go through some of your stash!!! 🙂

  • Ashley P

I’ve been on a similar kick. I can’t do any of the clinical protection deodorants because of the way my body changes the fragrance. I end up smelling like roach spray.

    • Ack! That wouldn’t be good at all!

  • Did you replace your mascara brush with another one???

    • I’m using a Physician’s Formula mascara currently.

  • I am really bad at using things up. I think I have toss more mascaras than used them. I agree as a beauty blogger I find it really tough to finish things up..

    • I’ve done better this year. Mostly because I have put myself on a guilt-trip!!! 😉

  • Betzy Carmona

I tend to finish everything before tossing it out, unless I hate it

  • Cosmetic Sanctuary

I always use the Clinical type for deodorant!

    • I’ve been using a regular Dove deo lately and have been happy with it.

  • I have been using the Dove Clinical or Dove Sensitive skin for a few years now and love it 😉

    • I love the smell of Dove deos too.
